Ms White:Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. And thank you for coming. Tonight I want to introduce you to a study technique Id like to use with my English classes. As I am sure you know, many language students experience great difficulty writing in English. They worry so much about getting their writing “correct that they write only a few sentences for a composition, and their writing is often not very interesting or logical. I believe we need a way to free students from worries about “accuracy” so they can concentrate on extending the length of their writing and becoming more fluent. One way to do this is through journal writing. Every day students write in a journal for a short period of time. This could be as little as three minutes at first, but could build up over time to ten minutes or more. They can write about anything they like. They dont need to worry about whether their grammar or spelling is correct;no one is going to correct their work. And no one is going to read their journal, not even their teacher. The aim of the exercise is to write as fast and as much as possible. Of course, Im not suggesting that students should stop worrying about accuracy in all their writing. At first their writing will probably be short and full of mistakes, but if they practise journal writing every day, they will soon find they are writing more and more, and that their writing makes more sense and is getting more accurate. I hope, ladies and gentlemen, that youll encourage your children to try journal writing. I believe that eventually they will write better and more easily. There will be plenty of time in the rest of their course to concentrate on accuracy. Im now going to hand out some samples of journal writing in which you can see how much students improve with this method. And Ill be happy to answer any questions you have. Thank you for your attention. (clapping) Answer key for Exercise 1:1 Her students only write a small amount and it is not very interesting or logical. 2 Journal writing, which is writing for a set period of time without stopping and without worrying about accuracy. Need to help students to write (3) more and to write more fluentlyWhat is journal writing?Students write in a special book each (4) day for (5) three minutes, increasing to (6) ten mins mustnt (7) stop writing can write about (8) anything they like dontworry about (9) accuracyWhy do journal writing? Will help them concentrate on fluency rather than (10) accuracy. Suggested answers to Exercise 3:You can write about anything you like. You must not stop writing until the time is up. If you can not think of anything to write, repeat what
