In 1960, the average life span was only 40 years. In 1990,after thirty years, life expectancy rose to 60. At the same time, with the life expectancy going up, the infant mortality is coming down. In 1960, the infant mortality was 200 deaths per 1,000 births. That is, about 200 infants died at birth among the 1,000 babies born. In 1990, the infant mortality declined to 100 deaths per I ,000 births. What are the reasons for this situation? I think they lie in three respects（方面）. First, thank to the advances in medical technology, people in developing countries are receiving better medical care than before. Second, with the development of the economy, people are better off today. So they pay more attention to the nutrition of their food. Third, owing to the increasing awareness（意识） of environmental protection, governments are taking more measures（措施） to deal with the problem of pollution. All these improvements in turn do good to peoples health and certainly extend their life time. Thats why in developing countries life expectancy is a great rise and infant mortality on the decline.w W w . x K b 1.c o M图表二：Changes in Peoples DietChanges in Peoples Diet As we can see from the table, great changes have taken place in peoples diet over the period from 1986 to 1990. While more and more high-nutrition foods such as milk and meat are consumed by people, the amount of grain consumption, once the main or even the only food for Chinese people, is continuously decreased. There are several reasons for such changes. Firstly, with the development of our countrys economy, people become more and more wealthy, so they can afford to buy expensive high-energy food. Secondly, nowadays, people believe that certain amount of these high-nutrition food is quite necessary to their health. In order to keep their body sound, they should add these food to their traditional diet.
