1 Lesson Plan for M1U3 Reading Dying to be thin 教学设计 南通市通州高级中学 刘霞 Overview This is the first period of the reading lesson from Unit Three, Module One of “Advance with English”. The text to be learnt is made up of three e-mails between Zhou Ling and her friend Amy about health and beauty. The students are supposed to have previewed the text, so they have a general idea of the three e-mails. The language in the text is relatively easy to understand, and the topic is quite relevant to students own interests and concerns, so the focus of the class falls on helping students acquire some advanced reading skills, like analyzing the logical relationships between sentences, understanding emotions, etc. Also, expression of varied opinions on the topic of health and beauty is a major concern of this class, as this is helpful to students psychological development. Objectives: By the end of this period, students will be able to understand the details and main ideas of the text. apply proper conjunctions to connect sentences logically. understand authors opinions and feelings from factual description. have a better understanding of sense of beauty and comment on it Interactive patterns TS; ST; SS (pair work; group work) Teaching procedures: Task 1 Check the homework Purpose: Students are asked to preview the text before class and note down their difficulties if they have any while reading. In class, teacher and students check homework and discuss their difficulties. This step aims to help students understand the literal meaning of the text and become interested in the topic. Activity 1: Teacher asks questions to check how well the students understand the text: 1. What does dying to be thin mean? 2. Why did Amy decide to take weight-loss pills? 3. What does Amy do now in order to recover? 4. What is the subject of each e-mail? What does “Re” mean? Activity 2: Students present their problems while reading before class. Then students discuss their difficulties. Task 2 Discuss main points 2 Purpose: Students learn to get the main idea of the text. Activity: Ask students to use 1 sentence to describe the main points of each e-mail. If students fell a bit difficult, they can do it in pairs. Task 3 Understand sentences and conjunctions Purposes: Students learn to apply logical conjunctions in various contexts. Activity 1 Students first refresh themselves with the logical functions of conjunctions, then, choose proper conjunctions for different contexts based on the text. The sentences include 1. I used to go to the gym three times a week, _ I dont work out any more. (L3 L4) 2. Im trying to lose weight _ Im so ashamed of my body. (L6) 3. _ Im preparing to act in a new TV play, Im taking weight-loss pills called Fat-Less, which are quite popular among young women here. (L6 L8) 4. (L35 L36) Task 4 Discuss inferences Purpose: Students learn to interpret emotions from plain descriptions, to understand the rhetorical pun used in the title and to make assumptions based on the text. Activity 1 understanding emotions Discuss sentences from the first e-mail that imply emotions. Ask students to figure out what emotions are implied. After a discussion of two such sentences, ask 3 students to read the rest of the email and think of more adjectives to describe Amys feelings. The first two sentences are: 1. I used to go to the gym three times a week, but I dont work out any more. I know another way to stay slim. (proud, happy, excited) 2. I hope to lose at least 10 kilograms. (confident, excited) Activity 2 making assumptions Ask students to make assumptions of Amy, using What would have happened if? Amy had continued to work out? Amy had taken more of the pills? Amy had not been treated in hospital? Activity 3 title analysis Discuss diction of the title. Ask students to compare die to do with wish to do or hope to do. Then introduce the rhetorical use of pun in the title. Task 5 Comment on a video clip Purposes: Students learn critical thinking on this topic and to express their own ideas through discussing. Activity 1 watching a video clip Students read some questions concerned with a video clip, then they watch it. The questions include: How old is Erin? How long has she been starving herself? How does she see herself in the mirror? Who brought her to the hospital? Why did she want to be so thin? Activity 2 discussing questions Students discuss the questions. Activity 3 writing comments in the worksheet Students work on their worksheet. They first read the comments of other people on Erin in the video clip, then they write their own. Finished, they share their comments in groups. Choose some students to report. Activity 4: teachers comment Beauty is but skin-deep. Beautiful behavior is better than a beautiful face and a beautiful figure. We dont need to damage our health for a slim and attractive figure. The important thing is learning to be confident. Activity1: Homework Students finish questionnaire on the worksheet. 4 Worksheet M1U3 Reading Dying to be thin Add Comment Comments (Showing 4 of 50) I used to believe being thin the most important thing in life. I was displeased with my figure and I lost faith in everything I did. Erins example shocked me. Shelley EmlingPosted 05.05.2015 Focusing only on losing weight, even when youre not overweight at all, leads to destruction. Many times, faith and self-acceptance are the very first steps to success. Steve Hirsch,Posted 05.04.2015 As long as there are people trying to lose weight, there are people debating the weight loss benefits versus the drawbacks. Erin is the answer. Dr. PhilPosted 06.05.2015 Erin should have formed the habit of going to the gym. I walk out of the gym feeling exhausted, but great. It makes me feel alive.
