My mom had to go to a clinic there for treatment, and we all went together as a family and took the opportunity to have a beautiful vacation as well. It was the first time abroad for me and it was a vacation that broadened my perspective, taught me a lot, and helped shape a bit of who I am today.Although we did visit many famous places in northern Italy, we stayed mostly in a little town where some friends of my parents lived. Nothing helped me understand Italian culture better than my stay in this picturesque and magical town that many havent even heard of.Thanks to the holiday spent in Italy, I, quite a shallow girl, also discovered my passion for music, which stayed alive in me to this day and will probably stay forever. My parents friends had a son, Ricardo, who was a pianist. Dad had repeatedly but unsuccessfully tried to make me study an instrument and stick to it. However, when I heard Ricardo play, I instantly fell in love with music and felt a great desire to learn it. Ricardo taught me the first song I ever played on the piano, a silly, playful little tune that I still know by heart. We took a short trip to the Italian Alps at some point. I had never seen such majestic beauty before! The snow-covered peaks, the intimidating rocks, the fresh, harsh airwhat an experience! And what I remember impressed me the most was the fact that, although this was a popular touristic area, the region was incredibly clean, still “natural”, with places that seemed to never have been touched by humans. Then, the shallow teen that I was learned what a real treasure nature is and how important it is to protect it.24. What was the main purpose for the author and her family to go to Italy?A. My Passion for Music and NatureCMusic has a great effect on everyone. But does music affect plants, too? People have been experimenting with music for almost three decades. From school-level projects to higher-level scientific experiments, the effect of music on plants has been a confusing and debatable topic. We know music is sound and sound is nothing more than a wave. Plant growth is a result of the cell division that takes place within the cells. But why is music associated with plant growth? In humans, music has a strong effect on our health and mood, and over the years, people have claimed that the same effect has been observed on plants, too. Plants are sensitive by nature, and many people claim that they have feelings just as humans do. There are stories about plants shedding tears. Although scientists do not support these as facts, these myths have led them to take up various experiments on plants.Various studies have proved that plants respond to acoustic (音响的) energy. It increases their rate of growth and their size, and influences their overall health. Dan Carlson, after a thorough study over many years, has reached a conclusion that music helps plants absorb nutrients (养分) more efficiently. It took Dan about fifteen years to develop a foliage spray (叶面喷剂) that is used beneficially with the sound frequencies. Carlson calls this spray “Sonic Bloom”. His findings have proved to be beneficial for countless farmers and have resulted inaccording to Guinness Book of World Recordsthe largest indoor plant on record. The Purple Passion was treated with the Sonic Bloom process. It grew to be 1,300 feet tall and was alive even after 25 years. Its normal lifespan (寿命), however, is 18 months and it grows not more than 18 feet tall. The book, Secret of the Soil, writes about Sonic Bloom and its results. Sonic Bloom is also sold in the market.24. What inspired scientists to experiment with plants?A. The effects of music on humans.B. Plants are sensitive by nature.C. Foley, a 46-year old information-technology worker from Kyle, Texas, was heading into the theater to see Avengers: Infinity War when he realized he was having trouble breathing normally. The same symptom struck again during another movie the following night, but more severe this time. Once the cast on the second film rolled, Foley took action: he looked at his wristwatch. It was a bigger step than you might imagine, because Foley was wearing an Apple Watch equipped with medical sensors and experimental software to track basic functions of his heart. And the watch was worried. It had, according to the display, detected signs of an irregular heartbeat. Before long, Foley was in an emergency room, where doctors hooked him up to an ECG (心电图), which showed that he was in atrial fibrillation (心房颤动), an irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots (血栓), stroke and other potentially disastrous diseases. Foley spent the next few days in the hospital while doctors worked to return him to a normal heart rhythm eventually turning to a procedure called electrical cardioversion to shock his heart back to normal. Foley is doing fine now. But he believes that, if not for the warning on his watch, he might not have sought help in time. “I would have never known,” he says.Foley and his watch were part of an experiment run by Apple and Stanfords medical school. But beginning from Dec. 6, anyone can get an on-the-fly heart checkup, assuming theyve paid $399 or more for an Apple Watch. Thats when Apple will launch a software update that turns its latest model, called the Series 4, into a personal ECG, thanks to an innovative new sensor. Though less complicated than hospital ECG machines, the watch version can still provide basic information and warnings of potential risks worthy of a closer look by a medical professional.32.
