When the mother turned at the sound of her son crying, she saw that his hand was in the vase and was obviously stuck. She tried to help him and pulled and pulled until the child cried out in pain. But the hand was stuck fast. How would they get it out? The father suggested breaking the vase but it was quite valuable and the childs hand might be cut in the process. Yet he knew that if all else failed, there would be no other alternative. So he said to the boy, “Now, lets make one more try. Open your hand and stretch your fingers out straight, like Im doing, and then pull!” “But Dad,” said the boy, “if I do that, Ill lose my penny!”The boy had had a coin in his hand all the time and was holding it securely in his tight little fist. And he wasnt prepared to open his hand and lose the penny. But once he opened his hand, it came out of the vase easily.I used to hold on to things in my life that I thought were so important to me. Early in my marriage, all I cared about was becoming the best volleyball player in the state of Wisconsin. One year, when Kristi was working shifts at General Motors, I played in 1,400 games, competing four nights a week and 40 out of 52 weekends. My team won over 1,000 games. Success on the volleyball court, but a huge loss in my relationship with my Kristi. When I finally let go, I looked back at what I had done and was ashamed. Not only did I show my wife she wasnt the most important thing to me, but I missed out on a lot of relationship building time. My life is so much richer now that I am not a slave to that drive to be the best player I could be.24. The author tells the story about the boy and the vase to show _.A. how naughty a little boy can beB. a little boy may do something sillyC. money is not the most important for usD. we need to drop the unimportant things in our life25. Why did the boy get his hand stuck in the vase?A. He had a coin in his hand. B. He didnt know how to stretch his fingers.C. He was afraid to break the vase. D. His hand was hurt inside the vase.26. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Kristi left the author in the end.B. The author didnt regret what he had done.C. The author still plays volleyball as much as before.D. The author had his relationship with Kristi improved.27. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?A. The Beautiful Vase in Your Life B. Holding On to What Is Important C. The Way of Keeping Balance in LifeD. My Dream of Becoming the Best Volleyball PlayerCNext month, Im traveling to a remote area of Central Africa and my aim is to know enough Lingala one of the local languages to have a conversation. I wasnt sure how I was going to manage this until I discovered a way to learn all the vocabulary Im going to need. Thanks to Memrise, the app Im using. It feels just like a game.“People often stop learning things because they feel theyre not making progress or because it all feels like too much hard work,” says Ed Cooke, one of the people who created Memrise. “Were trying to create a form of learning experience that is fun and is something youd want to do instead of watching TV.”Memrise gives you a few new words to learn and these are “seeds” which you plant in your “greenhouse”. When you practice the words, you “water your plants”. When the app believes that you have really remembered a word, it moves the word to your “garden”. And if you forget to log on (登录),the app sends you emails that remind you to “water your plants”.The app uses two principles about learning. The first is that people remember things better when they link them to a picture in their mind. Memrise translates words into your own language, but it also encourages you to use “mems”. For example, I memorized motele, the Lingala word for “engine”, using a mem I created I imagined an old engine in a motel (汽车旅馆) room. The second principle is that we need to stop after studying words and then repeat them again later, leaving time between study periods. Memrise helps you with this, because its the kind of app you only use for five or ten minutes a day.Ive learnt hundreds of Lingala words with Memrise. I know this wont make me a fluent speaker, but I hope Ill be able to do more than just smile when I meet people in Congo. Now, I need to go and water my Vocabulary!28. What does Ed Cooke make an effort to do with Memrise?A. Create memorable experiences. B. Make progress with hard work.C. Master languages through games. D. Combine study with entertainment.29. What do the underlined words “water your plants” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Logging on to the app. B. Being a Memrise user.C. Learning new words. D. Taking care of your garden.30. How does Memrise work?A. By linking different mems together. B. By putting knowledge into practice.C. By offering human translation services. D. By applying an associative memory approach.31. What is the authors attitude towards Memrise?A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Disapproving.DPeople have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans(寿命)that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years. Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors(肿瘤)developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy. According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improved the animals sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors. “An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous (癌变的), large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body size. This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Petos paradox(悖论)”. Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephants case, the making of TP53 is natures way of keeping this species alive. The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance(抵抗力)as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers spreading or even developing in the first place. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US. “Its up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”32. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer? A. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing. B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage. C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors. D. They have a rather large body size.33. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals? A. The huge body size. B. Deadly tumors. C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage.34. Which of the following is TRUE about the meaning of “This phenomenon” in Paragraph 5?A. Larger animals have protection from TP53. B. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.C. The risk of cancer is not related to body size. D. The larger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have.35. What can be concluded from the passage? A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer. B. The TP53 genes have proved useless in stopping cancer in people. C. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53. D. The extra copies of elephants genes have been used to cure cancer patients.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Success is so much more than just money or fame.
