It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music and literature. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as Aesthetics. The definition and evaluation of art has become especially problematic since the early 20th century. Richard Wollheim distinguishes three approaches: the Realist, whereby aesthetic quality is an absolute value independent of any human view; the Objectivist, whereby it is also an absolute value, but is dependent on general human experience; and the Relativist position, whereby it is not an absolute value, but depends on, and varies with, the human experience of different humans. An object may be characterized by the intentions, or lack thereof, of its creator, regardless of its apparent purpose. A cup, which ostensibly can be used as a container, may be considered art if intended solely as an ornament, while a painting may be deemed craft if mass-produced.Traditionally, the term art was used to refer to any skill or mastery. This conception changed during the Romantic period, when art came to be seen as a special faculty of the human mind to be classified with religion and science. Generally, art is made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions. The nature of art has been described by Richard Wollheim as one of the most elusive of the traditional problems of human culture. It has been defined as a vehicle for the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, a means for exploring and appreciating formal elements for their own sake, and as mimesis or representation. Leo Tolstoy identified art as a use of indirect means to communicate from one person to another. Benedetto Croce and R.G. Collingwood advanced the idealist view that art expresses emotions, and that the work of art therefore essentially exists in the mind of the creator. The theory of art as form has its roots in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, and was developed in the early twentieth century by Roger Fry and Clive Bell. Art as mimesis or representation has deep roots in the philosophy of Aristotle. Well have to put_the_holiday_off until youre better.2这个寝室的女孩子们每周轮流去打开水。The girls of this dorm take_turns_to_fetch boiled water every week.3约翰特别喜欢挑别人的毛病。Johns extremely fond_of pointing out other peoples mistakes.4我们厌烦等他的电话。We are_tired_of waiting for him to call.5它们很相像。 Theyre so alike. I am aiming_to lose 4kg before the summer holiday. (1)The argument was kept alive by those enthusiastic students. (2)He must be still alive. (3)Although old,she is still very much alive. 2a style of painting adopted by a group of artists众多画家采用的绘画方式归纳拓展adopt vt. (1)Our school has adopted a new teaching method. (2)Wed like to adopt your idea. (3)Mr.Kern adopted the orphan as his own son. 3Pop art (from the word “popular”) was an important modern art movement that aimed to show ordinary twentiethcentury city life. 归纳拓展aim v计划,打算;以为目标;对准,瞄准;n.C目标,目的;U瞄准aim to do/be sth.aim at doing sth. (1)Harry aims to become/aims at becoming a doctor. (2)He aimed his gun at the lion, fired and missed. (3)She went to London with the aim of finding a job. 4Qi Baishi observed the world of nature very carefully, and his paintings are special because of this. (1)The police observed a man enter the building. (2)She observed a man walking on the opposite side of theroad. (3)We should observe the rules. (4)Can you say something about how the Chinese observethe MidAutumn Festival? 1Cubist artists painted objects and people, with different aspects of the object or person showing at the same time. 归纳拓展with different aspects of the object or person showing at the same time“同时展示对象的不同方面(侧面)”,这是“with名词现在分词(宾语补足语)”构成的短语在句中作伴随状语。 (1)I felt a bit nervous with so many people watching me soclosely. (2)With so much work to do,he was kept as busy as a bee. (3)With the door open,he went to the supermarket. (4)With nothing on,the king walked in the street. 2Im studying art at school, and I enjoy it a lot, although I can get tired of looking at pictures all the time. 归纳拓展get/be tired of.对厌烦;感到厌倦的be tired from/with因而疲倦be tired out精疲力竭;十分疲劳tiring adj. (1)I shall never get tired of life,I hope. (2)He is never tired of helping others. 3Its by a Chinese artist, isnt it?I can tell by the style. 归纳拓展tell by从可以看出tell A from B区分A和Bto tell sb.the truth说实话(用作插入语)There is no telling. (1)Telling by the expression on his face,I knew that he wasangry with me. (2)To tell the truth,I dont like the man.
