READING A When coal is burned in a boiler, two kinds of ash by-products are produced: a heavy bottom ash and a fine-as-powder fly ash. About 10 to 15 percent of the coal by-products are bottom ash which are used like sand on icy streets and highways and also on highways as paving material. It is the fly ash, however, that is receiving the greater amount of attention. Once considered a waste, fly ash is now classified as a natural resource in the U.S. by the state of Maryland. In accordance with state and federal environmental restrictions, fly ash is placed in controlled landfills, where it is compacted and covered with soil, for the seeds of various grasses and plants to be placed in the soil to make the land productive and provide permanent storage. Fly ash may be used as an additive to concrete in the construction of dams, bricks and roads, and can replaced up to 20 percent of the cement used in concrete. As a by-product of burned coal, fly ash requires no additional expenditure of energy, while cement production requires great amount of energy. In addition to using fly ash as a concrete additive, the technology is available to extract the main mineral components-alumina, silica, and magnetics. Today extracting these components in very expensive process, but the time may come when it is cheaper to extract these products from ash than to mine new supplies. 61. Fly ash is produced _. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby may be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child may be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm(eagerness)for life and his desire to find out new things for himself. Parents vary greatly in their strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality(守时)for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the childrens own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency(一贯性)is very important teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality(道德). Also, parents should realize that “example is better than percept”. If they are not sincere and dont practise what they preach(teach), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure(不稳定)when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled. A students awareness of a marked difference between their parents principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment. 65. Eagerly watching the childs acquisition of new skills _. A. should be avoided B. is universal among parents C. sets up dangerous states of worry in the children D. will make him lose interest in learning new things 66. In the process of childrens learning new skills parents _. A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read B. should not expect too much of them C. should achieve a balance between pushing them too much and leaving them on their own D. should create as many learning opportunities as possible 67. The second paragraph mainly tells us that _. A. parents should be strict with their children B. parental control reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the community C. parents restriction vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children alone D. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation 68. The word “percept ” probably means _. A. idea B. punishment C. behavior D. instruction 69. In moral matters, parents should _. A. observe the rules themselves B. be aware of the marked difference between adults and children C. forbid things which have no foundation in morality D. consistently ensure the safety of their children C Why do women live an average of nine years longer than men? Thats the question Professor Laura set out to find out among 4,000 people living in Los Angeles area. Sandman, now working at University of California at Berkely, found the risk factor or bad habits thought to lead to the early death were far more prevalent among women than men. High risk factors for women included smoking, physical inactivity, and few contacts with friends or relatives. Much the same factors thought of for men were drinking, cigarette smoking and not being married. The conclusion is that women are indeed more biologically fit than men simply as a result of hormone differences. Says Sandman, Women have lower death rates in almost every country, at almost every age, and for most causes of death. 70. In the second part, the word “prevalent” most nearly means _. A. happening early B. of great value C. existing commonly D. belonging to the earliest stage 71. Which of the following can be concluded from the passage? A. Women live longer than men because they smoke less than men. B. Although women live longer than men, men lead a happier life. C. Because women act better to medicine, they live longer than men. D. Even though risk factors thought to lead to early death are more prevalent among women than men, women live longer than men. 72. The best title for the article is _. A. A Special Hormone B. Womens Long Life C. Reasons For Longer Life D. Why Women Live A Long Life D At 9:00 Dick Spivaks bank telephoned and said his payment was late. “The check is in the post,” Dick replied quickly. At 11:45 Dick left for a 12:00 meeting across town. Arriving late, he explained that traffic had been bad. That evening. Dicks girlfriend wore a new dress. He hated it. “It looks just great on you,” he said. Three lies in one day. Yet Dick Spivak is just an ordinary man. Each time, he told himself that sometimes the truth causes too many problems most of us tell much the same white lies, harmless untruths that help to save trouble. How often do we tell white lies? It depends in part on our age, education, and even where we live. According to one U.S. study, women are more truthful than men, and honesty increases as we get older. While most people use little white lies to make life easier, the majority of Americans care about honesty in both public and personal life. They say that people today are less honest than they were ten years ago. Although it is believed that things are getting worse, lying seems to be an age-old human problem. T
