night monkeyshave tails, smaller in size, walk less upright, use smell more than sight, less developed brainapesgreat apes (gorillas, chimpanzees, humans) lesser apeshave no tail, larger, walk more upright, use sight more than smell, more developed brain, have fewer youngnew wold primatessmall monkeys;(spider monkeys;night monkeys)smaller, spend less time on the groundold world primatesmonkeys, apes, humansbigger, spend more time on the ground (Teacher gives some more time for students to prepare Exercise 2 and Exercise 3.Then teacher asks them to give the answers.)T:Now look at Exercise 2.Try to answer this question:In what way are the higher primates, for example chimpanzees, similar to human beings?S4:Higher primates, for example chimpanzees, are similar to us human beings in many ways:They use the senses humans do.They have feet and hands that are similar to ours.Their diet is also similar to ours. That is,they also eat meat and plants. The most important is that the genes of human beings and chimpazees are more than 95% similar.Besides, they both live in groups and can communicate with each other in many ways.T:Very good! Now,next questions:How are they different?S5:Human beings are chimpazees but are also different from each other in some ways:Chimpanzees are not so tall as humans. They can grasp things with their feet because they still have opposable toes while human beings cant.Chimpanzees feast on things such as insects and ants, but humans dont do so.Humans can use languages to communicate but chimpanzees cant.Humans have much more developed brains than chimpanzees.T:You are quite right. Now look at Exercise 3 and try to answer this question:Do you think it is possible to teach chimpanzees to use language and do other things that we consider typically human? Why or Why not?Just give your own opinion.S6:I think it is not possible to teach chimpanzees to use language or do other things humans do,because they dont have the same developed brains as humans.S7:I dont think so.I hear that dogs can type out some words on the keyboard.Dolphins can give performances.Monkeys can ride bicycles.Of course, all of them need to be trained in special ways in order to do so.Chimpanzees are as clever as these animals. If they are trained properly,Im sure they can do some of the things humans do.T:I agree with both of you.Indeed, some kinds of animals such as elephants, dolphins, chimpanzees, dogs are very clever. They can learn to do some of the things humans do after being trained. However, they can not do all the things humans do,including using language. The reason is that chimpanzees dont have the same developed brain as humans.Step WritingT:After we read the passage about primates, weve gained much knowledge about them. Now lets do some writing. Please look at the screen. You can choose one of the topics and write a short essay in which you state and support your opinion.(Teacher shows the following on the screen.)1.Some scientists believe that primates, especially higher primates, should be treated differently from other animals.Whats your opinion?Do you think that higher primates should be given special rights because they are so close to human beings?2.Many of the higher primates, such as chimpanzees and gorillas, are endangered as a result of human activitieseither by direct hunting or by the destruction of their habitat. What can we do to help these endangered species and make sure that we do not cause more harm to them. (Teacher gives students some time to prepare. They but are allowed to have a discussion before they begin to write the essay. If there is not enough time in class, teacher may tell students to finish it after class.Sample writing:Saving PrimatesIt is reported that nearly half of the primates in the world are facing the danger of dying out. Some of them are being hunted for food or other things.Others are dying out because their habitat is destroyed as a result of human activities. There are 22 species of primates in our country. The majority of them live in the southwest of China. Most species have reduced in number. Now people have realized the importance of protecting wild animals.Government has taken measures to protect them. For example, many laws have been passed. If anyone kills primates for food or sells them for money,he will be punished.More natural parks have been built wh
