And how did you know he was there?”“I think he must be a burglar”said the doctor“I knew he was there because when I finally removed what was stuck in Shebas throat:it turned out to be three human fingers”60What was Joanne supposed to do at 6:30?ATo walk her dogBTo see her doctorCTo attend a club meetingDTo play tennis with her friends61Joanne wanted to get back to her home again Ato dress up for the meetingBto phone the police stationCto catch the badly hurt burglarDto wait for her dog to be cured62 From the passage,we can infer that ASheba fought against the burglarBthe police found the burglar had broken inCJoanne had planned to take her dog to the meetingDthe doctor performed a difficult operation on the dog63In this passage, the writer intends to tell us that the dog is Aclever Bfriendly Cfrightening DdevotedCApparently,we are safe neither at home nor in the business officeWe use water in both places, but the research shows that chemicals added to our local water supply to kill harmful bacteria can have unwanted side effectsThese chemicals can cause potential harm through drinking and in seemingly harmless activities as cleaning ones houseThey are released(set free)from water by daily actions like water running out of tap, spraying from garden pipes,or splashing in dishwashers and washing machinesAs the water is movingthese chemicals are released into the air and then breathed in. Once inside our bodies, they start to affect our health.Does this mean we should stop bathing? No, say the scientists, but we should put all pollution into perspective. Activities at home such as the burning of coal, cooking oil, or even candles release carbon monoxide and particulates such as cigarette ashes which have been proven as harmful to health as working or living near heavy traffic. New tugs, bedding, and even clothing give off that“new smell, ”which is a sure sign of chemicals. In the office, newly applied paint, newly purchased telephones and other telecommunications equipment, and computers release polluting chemicals, too. As offices and homes often have inadequate ventilation (通风), these chemicals can build up to become health problems. Their poisonous effects are only now being slowly recognized. These facts suggest that, at a minimum, proper airing of newly purchased goods with an obvious chemical smell is a wise warning. Home and office windows should be opened during good weather. Even ones car needs to be ventilated as well while in the garage. We need further research to understand better other potential health dangers, too. For example, the effects of overcrowding of schools (carbon dioxide build-up ), the factory work environment ( an endless list of potentially dangerous substances ), and even home heating and cooling (the air conditioner may be our enemies, not our friends) have only recently started to come to light. Until we understand the effects of our new technological environment better, we can only hope that“there is no place like home.”64What is the main idea of the first paragraph?AThe air we breathe in is harmful.BThe water in everyday use is unsafe.CChemicals are added to the drinking water.DChemicals are released in the running water.65In Paragraph 2, the underlined sentence means that .Abathing should be done with cautionBhomes and offices should be aired oftenCany pollution should be taken into considerationDwe should prevent any pollution from doing harm to us66What is the purpose of the passage?ATo call on us to guard our water.BTo show us that no place is like home.CTo make us aware of the pollution around us.DTo argue that neither homes nor offices are safe.DHabits are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly, setting our brains on auto-pilot and relaxing into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine.“Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting creatures,”William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. In the ever-changing 21st century, even the word“habit”carries a negative meaning. So it seems contradictory to talk about habits in the same context as innovation (创新). But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks.Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit, we can instead direct our own change by consciously developing new habits. In fact, the more new things we try, the more creative we become. But dont bother trying to kill off old habits; once those ruts of procedure are worn into the brain, theyre there to stay. Instead, the new habits we deliberately press into ourselves create parallel pathways that can bypass those old roads.“The first thing needed for innovation is attraction to wonder,”says Dawna Markova, author of The Open Mind.“But we are taught instead todecide, just as our president calls himselfthe Decider”She adds, however, that“to decide is to kill off all possibilities but one. A good innovational thinker is always exploring the many other possibilities.”“All of us work through problems in ways of which were unaware,”she says. Researchers in the late 1960s discovered that humans are born with the ability to approach challenges in four primary ways: analytically, procedurally, collaboratively (合作地) and innovatively. At the end of adolescence, however, the brain shuts down half of that ability, preserving only those ways of thought that have seemed most valuable during the first decade or so of life. The current emphasis on standardized testing highlights analysis and procedure, meaning that few of us use our innovative and collaborative ways of thought.“This breaks the major rule in the American belief systemthat anyone can do anything,”explains M. J. Ryan, author of the 2020 book This Year I Willand Ms. Markovas business partner.“Thats a lie that we have preserved, and it fosters commonness. Knowing what youre good at and doing even more of it creates excellence.”This is where developing new habits comes in.67Brain researchers have discovered that .Athe forming of new habits can be guidedBthe development of habits can be predictedCthe regulation of old habits can be transformedDthe track of new habits can be created unconsciously68The underlined word“ruts”in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to .AzonesBconnectionsCsituationsDtracks69Which of the following statements most probably agrees with Dawna Markovas view?ADecision makes no sense in choices.BCuriosity makes creative minds active.CCreative ideas are born of a relaxing mind.DFormation of innovation comes from fantastic ideas.70The purpose of the author writing this article is to persuade us .Ato give up our traditional habits deliberatelyBto create and develop new habits consciouslyCto resist the application of standardized testingDto believe that old habits conflict with new habits第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。EThe MississippiThe Mississippi is a great river whose relationship with man goes way back beyond its discovery in the 16th century. The River Indians used it as a highway and as a source of food, and it was they who gave it its name“misi”meaning“great”and“sipi”meaning“water”When the length of its branch, the Missouri, is added to it, the Mississippi becomes greater. 71 . From the source of the Missouri to the tip of the delta (三角洲), it is 2, 480 miles long.Great rivers are likely to suffer floods. In 1927 the Mississippi flooded 26 thousand acres, sweeping away farms, towns, everything in its path. In 1938 its floods drowned or killed 200 people and made millions homeless. Today the river has largely been controlled. 72 .Industries have spread down some of the wa
