surf the Internet for information about Dickens and the time he lived in.Now Ill ask two students to report the findings.Volunteer!S1:Charles Dickens was born in 1812 and died in 1870.As a young man,he began to read English novels. They kept alive his fancy, and his hope of something beyond that place and time. But at twelve, his father was taken to prison for debt.He had to be sent to work in a factory in the east of London.Later,he returned to study at school. But his miserable life at the factory left an everlasting, painful brand on his mind. This had a deep influence on Dickens thought and work after years. He experienced the Chartist Movement of England. He travelled to America and the European continent. The great social movements in the middle of the 19th century inspired his famous novels of social criticism. He gave us a most vivid picture of the everyday life of the ordinary people of his time.He created a large number of characters well drawn, full of life and unforgettable. He criticized the vices of capitalist society. He was the great writer and great man,who loved the common people so humanely and understandingly. His works display his deeply sympathy for the poor.S2:.T:Yes.That is why Dickens has been a famous writer and popular with the people of the world.Step Pre-readingT:Christmas Day is coming. What will you do when it comes?Ss:Well send Christmas cards to friends, classmates and teachers, and wish them “Merry Christmas”.T:Do you know what the evening of December 24 is called?Ss:It is called “Christmas Eve”.T:Yes.Celebrating Christmas Day in the Western countries is a very important event, just as we celebrate the Spring Festival in our country. How is it celebrated? There are other questions in Pre-reading.Now open your books on Page 57.Discuss the questions in groups.I think some of you have found something about Christmas Day through the Internet.Lets begin, please.(Teacher gives students a few minutes to discuss, and then asks two or three students to answer the questions.)T:Are you ready?(Ss:Yes.)Please report me your discussion.S3:Ill try.The evening of December 24 is called Christmas Eve.The names of the two days of Christmas are Christmas Day and Boxing Day.Christmas is celebrated mainly on December 24 or Christmas Eve when the gifts are given in the evening. However, the December 25 and 26 are also free days.According to tradition, gifts are brought. Many very old Christmas traditions are followed, mostly for fun.People are taught not to eat anything on Christmas Eve until a ceremonial dinner is served,in order to be able to see “a golden pig”.For dinner, they often have a turkey, and make some raisin puddings. Each family has a Christmas tree.It is usually a spruce or pine. They often decorate it to add to the festive atmosphere. All kinds of things are put on the tree, such as lights, colorflowers, toys and stars. The gifts are displayed under the Christmas tree and people open them after the dinner. All the families sing and dance around the tree. Before going to sleep, children prepare an empty container for Father Christmas to put gifts in.In America, children hang up the socks on the fireplace and in many other countries, empty shoes are put on the window sills outside the houses, waiting for gifts to be put in.The next morning, they can find socks and shoes full of such gifts as toys, chocolate and candy. In a word,Christmas Day is largely celebration of family, food and religious observation.S4:The 12 days between Christmas and January 6 are called Christmas Tide.During the days people usually go from door to door to visit friends and relatives. They get together and exchange Christmas gifts and Christmas cards with one another.T:From your talk, weve known a lot about Christmas Day.But do you know how Christmas Day is known to everyone in the world? It lies in a famous novel written by Dickens “A Christmas,as Carol”.When it appeared, some Christmas customs began, such as get-together,exchanging gifts, the ceremonial dinner and “Merry Christmas”.Today well enjoy a passage rewritten from the novel. Before reading it,lets learn the new words in it first.Read them and try to remember them.(Teacher and students learn the new words together. If necessary, teacher corrects their pronunciations and gives a simple explanation. At last, teacher checks the new words.)Step ReadingT:Now open your books at Page 57.Lets read the passage. It is the first part of the novel.Read it quickly and answer the questions on the screen.(Teacher shows the questions on the screen.)Answer the questions:1.When does the story happen?2.Who is Ebenezer Scrooge?Which word is he always saying to comment on everything?3.Who is Bob Cratchit? What does he want to do?4.What does the gentleman want Scrooge to do?Has he promised? What happened to Scrooge?(Teacher gives students a few minutes to read the passage and asks them to give the answers one by one.)Suggested answers:1.The story happens on the evening before Christmas, that is to say,at Christmas Eve.2.Maybe Scrooge is a businessman or a boss.He is always commenting on everything by saying “Humbug”.3.Bob is working for Scrooge as a clerk. He wants to go home to spend Christmas Day with his family.4.The gentleman is raising money to buy the poor some meat, drink and other basic needs. He wants Scrooge to open his heart to the poor. But Scrooge doesnt agree to it.He would rather make them hungry to death than help them.At last he is brought back to his old days in his dream.T:Well done.Youve known the general idea of the passage. Now read the passage again and answer the questions in Post-reading.These questions may be a bit hard.If you have difficulty in finishing the task, you can discuss them in pairs or in groups. After a while,Ill check them.(A few minutes later, teacher checks their answers.)Suggested answers:1.Scrooge treats people working for him as his slaves. He doesnt care for them and only asks them to work all day, even all year without a rest. For example,at Christmas Eve,Scrooge makes Bob be working till the last minute. There is no fire in the office. When Bob is too cold to write and read,he has to warm his hands on the candle.2.(1)Characters in stories by Charles Dickens can often be recognized by some typical behaviour.Scrooge is such a mean, cold, hard, selfish old man.The typical of Scrooge is like this:When someone is talking with him,he often says“Humbug”no matter what the other persons says.It means that he cares for nothing but money.Or:He often says“Humbug”.It means that he cares for nothing but money, what others say is useless unless he can make money from it.(2)Typical of Santa Claus is that he is always happy, saying“Ho,ho,ho”.That means that everyone should be happy and make the others happy.3.Fred thinks the true spirit of Christmas Day is to do someone good even without bringing in profits when he does not only think about himself and he opens his heart freely to think of other people.4.He is raising money to help the poor and he hopes that Scrooge will give some of the money to the poor like him.Step Language StudyT:There are some important words and phrases we should master. Now read the passage to find them out in it.(After reading it,some students are asked to find the phrases and teacher writes them on the blackboard:anyway, leave alone,.)T:Please look at the blackboard.Translate the words and phrases into Chinese and try to make a sentence with each one.(Teacher asks some students to finish the task orally. If they have made any mistakes in doing this, teacher or other students correct them.)T:Now look at some examples on the screen and learn to use them correctly.1.Anyway,I must finish this work today.Compare:However difficult the work is,I must finish it today.2.Go away and leave me alone.Leave the glass alone;you might break it.3.She admitted stealing the bicycle.=She admitted that she had stolen the bicycle.A fuel leak is now admitted to have been the cause of the trouble. He was admitted into the university.4.The house is in want of repair.5.She said she didnt like it,but personally I thought it was very good.6.The workers occupied the factory and refused leave.Writing occupies most of my free time.7.The film has been closed up for several years.8.The school is holding a competition to raise money for a new hall.9.The country has abundant supplies of oil and gas.10.You must make a long story short. (Students are asked to read the sentences and translate them into Chinese.Meanwhile, students must pay attention to the underlined words and phrases.)T:There are two difficult sentence patterns in the passage. Please look at the screen.1.Much good may it do you!2.Prison and places like that cost honest taxpayers like me enough, and those who are badly off must go there.T:The first sentence is an inversion.“It”refers to “Christmas Day”.Pay attention to the sentence pattern:May+sb.+v.=.wish sb.+n.e.g.May you be happy.=I wish you happiness. In the second sentence, you must pay attention to the meaning of the word“off”.It means“having a stated amount of something especially money.”e.g.They are badly off.=They are not well off.=They are poor.(Teacher writes the sentence patterns and examples on the blackboard.)Step ListeningT:Now lets listen to the tape. While listening, pay attention to your pronunciation.(After listening to the tape, students are given a few minutes to read aloud the passage.Meanwhile, they must remember everything in the passage.)Step ConsolidationT:Now weve learnt the first part of the passage. Can you tell me the stor
