They reason this in the following way.As far as astronomers can determine, the entire universe is built of the same matter. They have no reason to doubt that matter behaves in the same way in every part of the universe. Therefore, it is reasonable to guess that other stars, with their own planets, were born in the same way as our own solar system. What we know of life on Earth suggests that life will arise wherever the proper conditions exist.Life requires the right amount and kind of atmosphere. This eliminates(排除) all those planets in the universe that are not about the same size and weight as the Earth. A smaller planet would lose its atmosphere; a larger one would hold too much of it.Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light. This eliminates double stars, or stars that flare up suddenly. Only single stars that are steady sources of heat and light like our sun would qualify(合格).Finally, life could evolve (进化) only if the planet is just the right distance from its sun. With a weaker sun than our own, the planet would have to be closer to it. With a stronger sun, it would have to be farther away.If we suppose that every star in the universe has a family of planets, then how many planets might support life? First, eliminate those stars that are not like our sun. Next, eliminate most of their planets; they are not the same size and weight as the Earth. Finally, remember that the proper conditions do not necessarily mean that life actually does exist on a planet. It may not have begun yet, or it may have already died out. This process of elimination seems to leave very few planets on which earthlike life might be found. However, even if life could exist on only one planet in a million, there are so many billions of planets that this would still leave a vast number on which life could exist.1. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. The planet must be as big and heavy as the earth.B. Proper conditions are essential to the existence of life.C. Double stars can provide steady light and heat.D. The distance between a planet and its sun should be right.2. The existence of life depends on all EXCEPT _.A. the right amount of atmosphere B. our own solar systemC. steady heat and light D. the right distance from its sun3. Astronomers believe that matter in different parts of the universe _.A. has different laws B. hasnt one common lawC. shares the same laws D. shares no common law4. At the end of the passage the author suggests that _.A. it is impossible for life to exist on planetsB. earthlike life could only exist on a few planetsC. life could exist on only one planet in a millionD. life could exist on a great number of planetsBEvery land has its own dining custom, and the United States is no exception. Americans feel that the first rule of being a polite guest is to be on time. If a person is invited to dinner at 6:30, the hostess expects him to be there at 6:30 or not more than a few minutes later. As she usually does her own cooking, a hostess times the meal so that the coffee and meat will be at their best at the time she asks the guest to come. If he is late, the food will not be so good, and the hostess will be disappointed. When the guest cannot come on time, he calls his host or hostess on the telephone, gives the reason, and says at what time he thinks he can come.As guests continue to arrive, the men in the group often stand when a woman enters and remain standing until she has found a chair. A man normally rises when he is being introduced to a woman. A woman does not usually rise when she is being introduced either to a man or a woman unless the woman is much older. When the guests sit down at a dinner table, it is customary for the men to help the ladies by pushing their chairs under them.Even an American may be confused by the number of knives, forks, and spoons beside his plate when he sits down to a formal dinner. The rule is simple, however, use them in the order in which they lie, beginning from the outside or watch the hostess and do what she does. The small fork on the outside on the left is for salads, which are often served with the soup. The spoon on the outside on the right is for soup, and so on. Sometimes there is a separate little knife, called a butter spreader, on a small bread-and-butter plate on the left. As the bread is passed, each guest puts his piece on the bread-and-butterplate.5. The passage is mainly about _.A. how to accept other peoples invitation to dinnerB. how to behave properly before and at dinnerC. how to be polite to ladies at dinnerD. how to use the right kind of knives and forks6. According to the passage, _ necessitates(使成为必要) the use of knives, forks, and spoons the most.A. a dinner party B. a picnic C. breakfast D. afternoon tea7. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. In case of being late, the guest must phone the hostess.B. Follow the hostess in using different sets of knives and forks.C. As soon as a woman guest enters, men can sit down.D. Men should help women to sit down at the dinner table.8. When both a man and a woman are introduced to another woman about their age, _ normally has to rise.A. both the man and the woman B. only the man C. only the woman D. neither of themCSoccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been a few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way-was it through training and practice, or are great players born, not made? First, these players came from places that had famous stars in the past-players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate(模仿). In the history of soccer, only six countries have ever won the World Cup-three from South America and three from western Europe. There has never been a great national team-or a really great player-from North America or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four. Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighbourhood-a poor, crowded area where a boys dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beetles, had one
