They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead! Of course he isnt really dead. With any luck he isnt even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars of even catching fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks. There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress. Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! But although their work depends on trick of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntmans success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff a thousand feet high. His parachute failed to open, and he was killed. In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are stuntwomen too.41. Stuntmen earn their living by _.A. playing their dirty tricks B. selling their special skillsC. jumping out of high windows D. jumping from fast moving trains43. When a stuntman falls from a high building, _.A. he needs little protection B. he will be covered with a mattressC. his life is endangered D. his safety is generally all right44. Which of the following is the main factor(因素)of a successful performance?A. Strength B. Exactness C. Speed D. Carefulness45. What can be inferred from the authors example of the Norwegian stuntman?A. Sometimes an accident can occur to a stuntman. B. The cliff is too high.C. The percentage of serious accidents is high. D. Parachutes must be of good quality.B“There is very little in my life that is more personal and more important to me than comets!” the amateur David H. Levy told Terence Dickinson in an interview. “Not just discovering them but watching them, learning about them, writing about them, understanding what they do. It makes observing the sky intensely personal. I feel when I find a new comet a door has been opened and I have seen a slightly new aspect of nature. There is this object in the solar system that for a few minutes or a few hours only I know about. It is like trying to pry(打探)a secret out of nature. It is a very special feeling.” Ever since he was a child, David H. Levy has been fascinated by the night sky and the wonders it reveals to devoted watchmen. He developed a special feeling for comets before he reached his teens, though it was not until 1984 after nineteen years and more than nine hundred hours of combing the sky in search of them that he discovered his first one, from a small observatory that he had built in his backyard.Since then, he has discovered or co-discovered twenty more, making him one of the worlds most important comet hunters. His most celebrated find is periodic comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which he made with the husband-and-wife comet-and-asteroid-hunting team Eugene and Carolyn Shoemaker. The comets dramatic collision with Jupiter in July 1994, which constituted(组成)“the greatest planetary show in recorded history,” to quote Malcolm W. Browne of the New York Times, captivated(迷住) not only professional astronomers, but many amateurs. Although he is only an amateur astronomer he earns his living by lecturing and writing books and by working with project artists. Theyre projects devoted to introducing astronomy to elementary school children he has won tremendous respect from his professional colleagues for his success in tracking down comets. “David H. Levy is one of those rare individuals blessed with the gift of discovery,” David Hartsel, who serves on the board of directors of the Richland Astronomical Society, in Ohio, has said. “Even rarer is his ability to let others share in the excitement and wonder of those discoveries through his writing and lectures.”46. The primary purpose of this passage is to _.A. praise Levy for his contribution to the observation of comets.B. show that an amateur can do things as well as a professional.C. introduce to the readers David Levy as a professional astronomer.D. demonstrate that strong interest is very important in helping one succeed in his life.47. All the following are suggested in this passage as reasons that contribute to Levys success as a respectable astronomer EXCEPT that _.A. he had his books published on astronomyB. he worked on a project that is intended to introduce astronomyC. he was born with the gift of the discovery of cometsD. he was highly praised by his colleagues for his unselfishness48. According to David Hartsel, he most appreciates Levys _.A. gifted ability of comet hunting C. curiosity to the sky and cometsB. ability of communicating his ideas D. spirit of devotion to astronomy49. Levy says that watching the sky is quite personal to him because_.A. he has developed a very special affection for the skyB. he can discover a secret out of natureC. he has established a close relationship with the skyD. he may have a personal talk with nature50. It can be inferred from the passage that_.A. Levys parents are astronomersB. Levy was born in the 1970sC. Levy achieved his fame in the 1980sD. The question“How can we be happy?” seems to worry everyone. Indeed, in this day and age of scientific advancement and heavenly comforts, people still do not seem able to find a definite answer to the age-old problem of finding happiness. Happiness seems to be a very difficult thing. Solons dictum “Count no man happy until he is dead” seems to present both the poor and the rich with a continual threat causing them no end of anxiety. In Oxford, England, a noted psychology professor, Dr Michael Argyle, has succeeded in his quest for happiness. Over the past eight years, he has been researching the mysterious antithesis(对立面)of depression, and has found convincing clues which he has embodied in his books. The Psychology of Happiness”, and “The Social Psychology of Everyday Life”.Dr Argyle explains that happiness comprises three essential elements first, positive emotions like joy; second, the absence of negative emotions like anxiety, and lastly, the non-emotional element which means a general, more profound satisfaction with life.“The bigger source of happiness is a happy marriage,” Dr Argyle explains. “Job satisfaction.” he continues, “is another essential ingredient of happiness.” Do you feel you are doing a useful job? Do you feel you are achieving, or stand a chance of achieving your ambitions? If you honestly have positive answers to these questions, then eventually, you will be happy; if not, then you can still be happy by reducing your ambitions and lowering your expectations in order to achieve happiness. The fact is, the higher your ambitions and dreams are, the more difficult it will be for you to achieve your goals and therefore it will be harder to achieve satisfaction and happiness.Dr Argyle offers other avenues people can take to find real happiness. Music, games or sports, a drink with a friend, a simple gathering at tea, lunch or dinner with loved ones, or simply thinking of nice things, call give a person happiness, if only for a few hours. Surprisingly, television programs, especially soap operas offers nothing but a bit of pleasurable moments. Often, television viewers are so carried away emotionally that they feel depressed or emotionally tired. Non-soap programmers, on the other hand, bore many viewers or sometimes deepen their misery. Dr Argyle further explains that wealth and worldly success do contribute to happiness. But in the ultimate analysis, Dr Argyle says, it is the persons temperament(性情)that makes him happy or unhappy. There are in our midst people who are naturally happy, and there are the sad ones.”Happiness is indeed mysterious. As one wise man put it, “Few are those who have never had the chance to achieve happiness, but fewer those who have never taken that chance.”51. The writer quotes Solons dictum in paragraph 2 to prove that _.A. happiness is everyones business B. the dead are happier than the livingC. man is generally hard. D. happiness is not easy to find52. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an ingredient of happiness?A. Happy marriage. B. Entertainment.C. High ambitions. D. Wealth and power.53. The writer believes that television programs_.A. do more harm than good B. offer only limited enjoymentC. should be avoided altogether by viewers D. are a genuine source of enjoyment54. Dr argyle believes that _.A. the temperament of a person is largely affected by his workingB. there are people who are by nature happy or unhappyC. there are people who blame others for their low self-esteemD. most people often feel depressed because they worry about them.55. In the last paragraph, the writer implies that _.A. happiness is falseB. people may not know it but they are, in fact, happyC. people should not bother seeking happinessD. most people have been happy at least once in their life第二节 信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息请将答案填涂在答题卡标号为5660的相应位置上。(注意:如选E,则同时填涂A和B;如选F,则同时填涂C和D。)以下是几所高等院校信息:A.
