But in a world of limited space and resources, recycling everything-even cars-is very important. Once a car reaches the end of its life, it is taken apart and some parts that can be reused are sold off. The remaining metal is melted down and sold while all the useless materials are just thrown away. Usually, 75 per cent of the car can be recycled. But new environmental rules in Europe say that at least 80 per cent of old car parts must be recycled by 2020;2020 and 95 per cent by 2020;2020.To achieve this, someone has to find a way to recycle plastics, which are usually just thrown away. Fortunately, British scientists have come up with solution. Through a new recycling process, they break down the plastics into gas, oil and a small amount of carbon and fibre (碳和纤维). This is a big step forward for the car companies, who want to use more plastics to improve a cars efficiency (功率). Companies like BMW are also hoping to use plastics that are easier to recycle.1. The passage is mainly about _ .A. how to give an old car a new lifeB. how to recycle old parts of bikesC. how to find a way to recycle resourcesD. how to reuse limited space and resources2. The underlined word solution in paragraph 2 means _ .A. 成功 B. 办法 C. 损失 D. 意见(B)One of the strongest arguments for the raising of the school leaving age(ROSLA)has been that it will bring us some way nearer toequality of opportunity. Many people like to think of our present system of schooling as providing plenty of steps up the ladder of success for clever children. It would be good to think that no one who is really bright can be missed out when the state system is obviously so complete. It is obvious, for instance, that many children from less wealthy homes reach university or do well in other ways.Unfortunately we now have plenty of proofs that many children of every level of ability do much less well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the intelligence(智力)of all male 18-to-20-year-olds. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two highest ability groups had left school at 15.It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to university is almost the same now as it was in 1939. One study of 5, 000 children from birth to 21 years old shows that up to half the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but far more boys than girls stay at school after 16.It is clear from this and many other proofs that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes-money, social respectability, and interesting jobs-which higher education gives. It is clear too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social background. Their parents often need the extra money another money-earner would bring in; they dont value education for itself because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, Its up to you.3. It is hoped that ROSLA will give all children _ .A. a more enjoyable time at schoolB. the same chance in societyC. the right to a better schoolD. higher scores in intelligence tests4. People would like to think that _.A. equal numbers of poor and wealthy children reach universityB. those with the least money get the best educationC. intelligent children are always selected by the system of schoolingD. only really clever children do well5. Working class children are thought to be at a disadvantage because _.A. many of the clever ones leave school earlyB. fewer go to university than ever beforeC. more than half leave school when they are 16D. fewer boys than girls stay at school after 16(C)Whats the secret to mastering chess? Lots of study and practice. But thats not all, according to a new research suggesting that expert and amateur (业余棋手)players use different parts of their brains during matches.Scientists in Germany scanned (扫描) the brains of 20 men as they played against computers. Half were grand masters while the other half were merely good amateurs whod practiced for at least 10 years. For a few seconds after a player made a move, tiny bits of focal gamma bursts appeared in their brains. In the amateurs, such bursts were detected(发现) clearly in an area crucial (重要的) for performing new tasks and establishing (形成) short-term memory. But, the bursts in the grand masters were found most often in the parts, of the brain linked with long-term memory and the ability to perform complex (复杂的) motor tasks. The lead researcher Ongjen Amidzic said his findings, reported on August 9 in the journal Nature, pointed out that experts and amateurs use their brains in different ways during a match. As a young man, I dreamed of becoming a grand master and practiced hard but I failed, said Amidzic, 32. Now I realize Ive reached a level I cant get through.6. According to the passage, _ .A. lots of study and practice can help make a grand master in chessB. grand masters are better at using their brains during chess matches than amateursC. amateurs have the ability of performing complex motor tasksD. grand masters often fail when playing against computers7. In the third paragraph, focal gamma bursts are tiny bits of _ .A. short-term memoryB. long-term memoryC. brain D. energy8. It is implied (暗示) but not directly stated that _ .A. ones thinking mode (模式) plays a key role in deciding whether she / hell be a grand master or notB. you have to practise
