These sirens were not in celebration; they were a cry to the university that something was wrong. A house, only one block away, was on fire. Nine of the universitys students lived there. From the minute the word got out that help was needed, it seemed like everyone showed up. The victims (受灾者) of the fire were offered endless invitations for housing for the night. The very next day, everyone got_into_gear to do their part in helping them. Flyers( handbills) were posted with items that were immediately needed, just to get these students through this next couple of days. Boxes for donations (捐赠品) and money jars were placed in every residence hall (学生宿舍).As a residence director, I went before the students in my hall to ask them to do what they could. I knew that college students dont have much, but I asked them to do their best: “Every little bit will help.” I really didnt think they could do much. I was proved wrong. At the hall council meeting the night after the fire, my residents decided to have a wing competition, where each wing of the building would team up to see who could bring in the most donations. I announced that the wing who won would receive a free pizza party.Thursday evening we announced over the PA system that we were beginning the wing competition. Within minutes, the place exploded. The single large box that I had placed in the lobby (大厅) was overflowing. We quickly grabbed more boxes, and we watched in_amazement as they, too, filled to the brim(边;沿). Members of the resident assistant staff and I began to count the items. I was astonished by what I saw, and I was inspired by these kids. When we came to the final tally(得分), the winners turned to me and announced that they would like to donate their winnings as well. They wanted the victims of the fire to have their pizza party.Tears welled up in my eyes. I had watched these students jump to action, work tirelessly and donate all that they could. And then, as if that were not enough, they handed over their reward. I was touched and so very proud of them.36The writer mainly wanted to_ by the story.Atell us nine of the college students suffered from a fireBsing praise of the college students helping the victims selflesslyCdescribe how successful the wing competition wasDexpress he was deeply moved by the college students action37The phrase “get into gear” in the second paragraph means _.Astart working Btake measuresCbe ready Dbe eager38At first, the residence director thought _.Ait was impossible to expect the college students to donate anythingBit was easy to collect a lot of donations from the college studentsCthe college students would donate something, but not muchDthe college students would donate all they could39The wing competition was held _.Aseveral days after the fireBthe night after the fireCa week after the fireDtwo days after the fire40The phrase “in amazement” in Paragraph 5 means _.Asatisfactorily BexcitedlyCsurprisedly Dhappily 课时作业(二)必修1Unit 2 English around the world限时:30分钟.单项填空1Frank studied_English language in London for four years, so he gets_ good knowledge of London.Aa; the B/; /C/; a Dthe; a2Do you think its a good idea to make friends with your students?_,I do. He wrote plays and poems during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, which remain very popular today.During earlier times, people would probably have learned several ancient Roman and Greek plays. It was not unusual for writers to produce more current versions of these works. For example, in Shakespeares play The Comedy of Errors Shakespeare borrowed certain details from the ancient Roman writer Plautus. For his play Macbeth, Shakespeare most likely used a work on Scottish history by Raphael Holinshed for information. Shakespeare might have borrowed from other writers, but the intensity(强度)of his imagination and language made the plays his own. While many plays by other writers of his time have been forgotten, Shakespeare and his art live on.Shakespeare was also influenced by the world around him. He described the sights and sounds of London in his plays. His works include observations about political struggles, the fear of diseases, and the popular language of the citys tradesmen. Shakespeares knowledge of the English countryside is also clear. His works include descriptions of deep forests, local flowers, and the ancient popular traditions of rural people. It would be impossible to list all of the ways in which Shakespeares works have influenced the world culture. But the first and greatest example would be his great influence on the English language. During his time, the English language was changing. Many new words from other languages were being added. Shakespeare used his sharp mind and poetic inventiveness to create hundreds of new words and rework old ones. For example, he created the noun forms of “critic”, “mountaineer” and “eyeball”. Many common expressions in English come from his plays, including “pomp and circumstance(装腔作势)”from Othello, “full circle(绕圈子)” from King Lear, etc. The list of cultural creations influenced by Shakespeare is almost endless. From paintings to television to music and dance, Shakespeare was well represented. Shakespeares plays have been translated into every major language in the world.Shakespeare became a wellknown writer during a golden age of theater. His years of hard work paid off.16What can we infer from the passage?AMany of Shakespeares works were influenced by earlier writings.BShakespeare was hardworking when he was a student.CThe experience of living in London helped a lot with Shakespeares works.DShakespeare became rich later because of the popularity of his works.17Shakespeare might have learnt some information from ancient Roman works in_.AKing LearBThe Comedy of ErrorsCMacbethDOthello18Why could Shakespeares works survive his time?ABecause there were so few people writing plays in his time.BBecause he produced too many works that nobody else could do.CBecause he was a rich and influential person of his time.DBecause his works were rich in imagination and language.19Shakespeares greatest influence should be on_.Athe English languageBpaintingsCtelevisionDmusic and dance20The passage is mainly about _.Aan introduction to Shakespeares life and his worksBthe main features and styles of Shakespeares playsChow culture influenced Shakespeare and he influenced cultureDShakespeares greatest influence on the world culture.阅读表达阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到相应的横线上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。1 Today, millions of people want to learn or improve their English but it is difficult to find the best method. Is it better to study in Britain or America or to study in your own country?2 The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the time you are in the country. You will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go. Another advantage is that you have to speak the language if you are with other people. In Italy, it is always possible, in the class, to speak Italian if you want to and the learning is slower.3 On the other hand,_ staying at home to study. You dont have to make big changes to your life. As well as this, it is also a lot cheaper than going to Britain but it is never possible to achieve the results of living in the UK. If you have a good teacher in Italy, I think you can learn in a more concentrated way than being in Britain without going to a school.4 So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to spend some time in the UK. This is simply not possible for most people, so being here in Italy is the only viable(可行的) option. The most important thing to do in this situation is to maximise your opportunities: to speak only English in class and to try to use English whenever possible outside the class.21What is the text mainly about?(no more than 10 words)_22What is the first advantage of going to Britain?(no more than 10 words)_23Fill in the blank in Paragraph 3 with proper words.(no more than 8 words)_24What suggestion does the author give to those who learn English in their own country?(no more than 20 words)_25What does the word “it” (Line 3, Paragraph 3) probably refer to?
