Out of nowhere, those words came _3_ off the page in a quote:“In the midst of death life persists, in the midst of _4_ truth persists, in the midst of darkness light persists.”Suddenly I wasnt unhappy and impatient any more. Then I _5_ my granddad. I loved to talk with him. And I was _6_ to hear what hed think of it. He had poor hearing, so I had to _7_ it a few times, but once he _8_ it, he laughed. “All I can say to that is totally _9_,” he said on the phone. I told him how glad I was, after a long winter, to finally see spring and _10_ to find that quote. “Why is that?” he asked. “Well, spring is a sure _11_ that life persists. And it just makes me _12_.”He laughed again, and then in his _13_ voice, he recited for me his _14_ “spring time” words:“The desert shall rejoice(高兴), and _15_ as the rose does.Even with joy and singing.”Many years later, _16_ my husband and I drove across a desert with many wildflowers and blooming cactuses(仙人掌), I could _17_ hear my granddad laughing:“The desert shall rejoice.”Life persists, and so do we, in the silence of _18_ and the blooming of cactuses; and in the dead of _19_ and the green of spring. As some see it, cities and nations are losing their common culture and their general spirit: people can no longer count on those around them valuing any of the same music or films. Others argue that a common culture is not dying so much as changing forms: it is less and less attached to a particular area and ever more linked to global networks. The facts lead to the change that anyone can become a cultural producer today, that the culture is increasingly available everywhere you want it, and whenever you want it, not just in the two months after the movie or book came out. Cultural possibilities have multiplied as a result, but the change also means fewer cultural moments. It is easy to find the change in terms of loss of diversity of society. So what will it mean if globalization turns us into one wide world culture? For the enthusiasts of these changes, culture is not about popular artists or books, but centers on platforms like Google and Wikipedia, where every variety of culture brings about the exchange of knowledge and ideas, and makes connections across boundaries. It is perhaps debatable whether two people who have participated in such websites, but in totally different corners of them, have had a cultural experience in common. In fact, these platforms become very successful with a large crowd of people, who build things together, share information, and forward articles back and forth. There are still more questions. What does it mean for the future of countries that culture now goes beyond the limits of the nation? Is there anything to defend and preserve in the passing cultural world, or is that merely to favor pen over printing press, horse over automobile?Up to now a growing quantity of culture has been globally spreading and developing. More individuals (个人) than ever have the chances to be makers of culture, even if that means more to choose from and fewer standards to be reached in common. What it means is this strange feeling: that of being more connected than ever, with oneclick access to so much of the cultural harvest around the world, and yet, of being starved for having similar interests and opinions with others, concerned only with ourselves.21In Paragraph 1 the author indicates _.Athe cultural diversity among peopleBthe missing of common cultureCthe disadvantage in the digitizing societyDthe double standard of cultural evaluation22It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that _.Apeople feel satisfied with the current cultureBcommon culture may exit into websites that connect the worldCdisappearance of common culture is a problem to be solvedDenthusiasts look for current culture from famous artists23According to the author, the increase of cultural possibilities can be caused by _.Aagreement with common cultureBpopular artists and books availableCindividuals as cultural producersDa reduction in development of culture24What is the authors attitude towards current culture?AUncertain. BApproving. CUninterested. DCritical.BLife doesnt always turn out the way wed like. When situations take an unfavorable turn, we become upset, frustrated, or angry. When others dont agree with us, or act in a manner we find disturbing, anger is a typical response. With the exception of a few extreme circumstances an angry reaction rarely improves the situation or helps us change our mind. Thoughtful consideration of what feelings and reaction are most helpful actually restores our real power, so consider the following alternatives to anger.Compassion, consisting of both understanding and empathy, can be a perfect solution to anger. Each person has a right to live life according to their beliefs, dreams, needs, etc. If someone is acting improperly or not living up to our ideals, we need to remove the “shoulds” and remind ourselves that it is a necessary part of their lifes journey. Choosing this alternative response softens ones heart and prevents anger from arising.Humor is another powerful tool for lessening anger. We take life and personal offense far too seriously. After all, their behavior is a reflection of their internal environment and has nothing at all to do with us and it is in reality relatively unimportant. Humor puts any serious situation into its proper places. It acts as a protective barrier to emotional pain as we recognize that what is happening has nothing at all to do with us.So when others behave badly, forgive them for their bad behaviors rather than judge them in your heart. When life hands us the exact opposite of what we requested, make light of it. After all, this life is only temporary so why get so bent_out_of_shape when it isnt in line with your ideals? Rain on your wedding day? Break out the umbrellas and boots and dance in the puddles!25What can we infer from the first paragraph?AAnger often does no good to the situation.BAll the people get annoyed easily.CAnger makes a person more powerful.DAnger can do something good in most cases.26How should we respond to others misbehavior according to the second paragraph?ACriticize it sharply. BComplain about it.CUnderstand and accept it. DLeave it as it is.27What does the underlined phrase mean in the last paragraph?ADull. BGifted. CDelighted. DAngry.28Whats the best title of the passage?AThe Bad Effects of Anger. BAlternative Responses to Anger.CThe Causes of Frequent Anger. DThe Risk of Getting Angry.CIn my living room, there is a plaque(匾) that advises me to “Bloom(开花) where you are planted.” It reminds me of Dorothy.I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s,when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville,Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program.Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County, Kentucky, Appalachian Mountain area.To get to her school from the town of Harlan,I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eightmile journey,I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times.Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains,I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness. From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom(忧郁) disappeared.Upon arriving at Dorothys classroom,I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects.Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for“dinner” (lunch)In case you dont know, poke greens are a weedtype plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification,Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterward, she invited me to the oneandonly steak house in the area to celebrate her victory, as if she had received her Ph.D. degree. After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom(传家宝), but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.29Upon arriving at the classroom, the author was cheered up by _.Athe sight of poke greens Ba big dinner made for herCDorothys latest projects Da warm welcome30“Early Childhood Development” in Paragraph 1 refers to _.Aan activity held by the studentsBa course given by the authorCa program directed by DorothyDan organization sponsored by Union College31What can we know about Dorothy from the last paragraph?AShe passed the required assessment.BShe got a pen as a gift from the author.CShe received her Ph.D.degree.DShe was invited to a celebration at a restaurant.32What does the author mainly intend to tell us?AWhatever you do, you must do it carefully.BWhoever you are, you deserve equal treatment.CWherever you are, you can accomplish your achievement.DHowever poor you are, you have the right to education.DGood news for giant panda lovers:The cute and cuddly creature has just been brought back from the brink of extinction. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) downgraded the species from “endangered” to “vulnerable” as the union released its updated Red List on Sept 4 at Hawaii. The downgrade came after IUCN data suggested that there were 1,864 giant pandas in the wild in China in 2020their population has grown by 17 percent in the decade leading up to 2020.Chinese conservation efforts, including forest protection and reforestation, are considered to be the driving force behind the animals resurgence.“Its all about restoring the habitats,” Craig Hilton Taylor, head of the IUCN Red List, told the BBC.The number of panda reserves in China has also jumped to 67, from 13 in 1992. Nearly twothirds of all wild pandas live in these reserves, according to the World Wildlife Fund. “Just by restoring the pandas habitat, thats given them back their space and made food available to them,” Hilton Taylor said.A loss of habitats, on the contrary, was what caused the number of pandas to drop to just over 1,200 in the 1980s, Hilton Taylor added.Apart from giant pandas, the Tibetan Antelope has also moved from “endangered” to “near threatened”. According to a statement from IUCN, the animals numbers dwindled severelydropping from around 1 million to an estimated 65,00072,500 in the 1980s and early 1990s due to commercial poaching. Rigorous(严格的) protection has since been enforced to protect the beasts and the population is now likely to be between 100,000 and 150,000.Despite the improved statuses, wild animals like the giant panda and the Tibetan Antelope still face great challenges. The IUCN warned, for example, that ongoing threats from climate change could eliminate more than 35 percent of the pandas bamboo habitat in the next 80 years, which would reverse the species recent gains.33Which of the following can account for pandas living improvement?ABetter climate. BMore built reserves.CWell restored habitats. DAroused public awareness.34The passage is written in order to _.Ainform Bconvince Cargue D advocate35What does the last paragraph imply?AThe climate will influence the threatened species.BPandas will go extinct for lack of abundant food.CWe humans still have a long way to go to protect the endangered species.DHabitats for giant pandas will decrease sharply.III. 七选五:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)How to Overcome Challenges in Your LifeWe all face tough and difficult challenges in life.
