Among the school-age kids in the study, those who had been exposed to dogs during their first year of life were 13 percent less likely to have asthma at age 6.The researchers said they dont know for sure what exactly may explain the relationship between early exposure to animals and a reduced risk of asthma. It might be due to a single factor, or more likely, a combination of several factors related to a dog ownership lifestyle or dog owners attitudes, such as kids exposure to household dirt and pet dust, time spent outdoors or being physically active, Fall told LiveScience. As a parent in a dog-and-baby household, it is nearly impossible to keep everything clean, and maybe this is a good thing for your babys future health. My take-home message from this study is that parents at this point do not need to worry about keeping their dog when expecting a baby for fear of asthmatic disease, Fall said. I do want to be clear that this recommendation is valid only for families without a child already having allergies. If they already have a furred-animal-allergic child, we do not recommend them to get a furred pet.According to this hypothesis(假设 ), being exposed to bacteria early in life is crucial for shaping a healthy immune system, and may play a role in modifying a persons risk of developing asthma and allergies. As to allergies and asthma, it is partially genetic, but studies like this do show us that your environment does play a key role in the development of your immune system, and the development of allergies and asthma, Parikh told LiveScience.4.Which of the following will Fall probably agree with?A.Asthma is still a common and serious disease for most children.B.Parents should take their pet for physical examination regularly.C.The link between keeping pets and having asthma among kids isnt clear.D.Dirt and pet dust in the family are bad for childrens health.5.Which of the following children shouldnt have a dog?A.Children who have asthma.B.Children who dislike outdoor activities.C.Children who are lack of patience.D.Children who have allergies to fur.6.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.Environment can change your immune system greatly.B.Both allergies and asthma are totally genetic.C.Its easy for people to develop asthma and allergies.D.Most bacteria are good for immune system.7.Whats the purpose of the passage?A.To persuade parents to buy a pet for their children.B.To tell readers the finding of a study on children.C.To clarify some misconceptions about keeping a pet.D.To explain why keeping a pet is beneficial to children.CI was having a great morning until I sat down in front of my office computer. Your password has run out, a server message flashed on my screen, with instructions for changing it. Coming up with a new code doesnt seem like a big deal unless you work at my company, where we have to change it monthly, using at least one uppercase(大写的) character, one lowercase character, one symbol, and one number. Oh, and the whole thing cant be fewer than eight characters. And I cant use any of the same passwords Ive used in the past three months.Suddenly I was cross. What didnt make it any better was that I was deeply depressed after my recent divorce. The flashing cursor(光标) was still waiting for me to type a password that Id have to re-enter many times for the next 30 days. I remembered a tip from my former boss: Im going to use a password to change my life.I decided to choose a password, which would remind me that I shouldnt let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do something about it. I made my password Forgiveh3r.I had to type this statement several times a day. Each time my computer would lock. Each time my screen saver with her photo would appear. Each time I would come back from eating lunch alone. In my mind, I wrote forgive her every day.The simple action changed the way I looked at my ex-wife. That constant reminder led me to accept the way things had happened at the end of my marriage and adopt a new way of dealing with my depression. As the month wore on, I felt slow healing began to take place. By the time my server reminded me to reset my password the following month, I felt free.8.According to the authors company, which code is suitable?A.never2&lateB.1u#LifeC.HEALTH* keepingD.persist4Ever9.Which word can replace the underlined word cross in Paragraph 2?A.Angry.B.Curious.C.Anxious.D.Nervous.10.Why did the author change his password into Forgiveh3r?A.To make it easier for him to remember.B.To reduce his frustration of the recent divorce.C.To protect his computer against hacker attacks.D.To inform people of the importance of forgiveness.11.What is the best title of the passage?A.Learn the Best Way to Deal with DepressionB.What an Unsuccessful Marriage Taught MeC.How a Password Changed My LifeD.Choose a Suitable Password for Your ComputerDIn China, chain restaurants, especially the big multinational ones, are cool. Going to Starbucks, for example, is a status symbol. It not only says, “Im rich enough to buy this overpriced coffee,” but also, “Im cosmopolitan(见多识广的)enough to be part of globalization.”Where I come from in the UK, however, chains are neither fashionable nor gourmet (美食的). Chains are where you go on New Years Day when nowhere else is open, or when you are 5 years old and your parents cant stand hearing, “Im hungry!” any longer. In my own case (with regards to McDonalds), a chain is where you are taken on your first “date”. Even at the age of 13, I knew to give the guy the “lets just be friends” phone call the next day.In the UK, independent cafes and restaurants are making a comeback on the fashion scene. Nowadays, a Londoner who says “lets meet for a coffee at Monmouth” (an independent cafe) is much cooler than one who says “lets go to Starbucks”. Even if Monmouths coffee is a little more expensive, theres a satisfaction in knowing your pounds arent going straight to the big corporations.Of course, there are chain stores all over the UK; you cant go five minutes without spotting a Costa Coffee. But numbers do not add up to good taste.I do, however, have a confession (坦白). After moving to China I had moments when all the rice and Kung Pao Chicken became too much. I, too, have retreated to McDonalds.12.Many Chinese people like to go to multinational chain restaurants because _.A.the restaurants give customers a taste of foreign culture.B.the restaurants offer different food and drinks from other restaurants.C.these restaurants are perfect places for a romantic date.D.they believe that eating there will show their wealth and social status.13.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.The author has grown tired of Chinese food.B.Most independent stores are closed on New Years Day in the UK.C.Branches of Monmouths cafe can be found all over the UK.D.It is cool in the UK to take your first date to a chain restaurant.14.We can infer from the article that _.A.the author doesnt like to follow fashion trends.B.many Britons think that numbers mean poor quality.C.many Britons dont like big corporations.D.the author doesnt like food from Pizza Hut.15.What does the underlined word (in the last paragraph) mean?A.adaptedB.switchedC.subscribedD.contributed第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。This is the season for giving. Looking to get in touch with your generous side? Learn these four habits of truly thoughtful gift givers.16Considerate gift giving is as much about planning as it is about how well you know the person. Take time to think about his or her personality and interests to figure out how he or she will get the most value. They dont focus on cost. The practice of thoughtful giving offers a wealth of benefits, but that doesnt mean givers should focus on expensive gifts. 17It seems that having more cash could actually reduce compassion(同情).
