Albert Einstein was unable to get a job as physics professor. But later he wrote the two most famous papers while employed as a patent office worker. After their publication, there was not any major university in the world that would not be glad to have him work for them.If you want to work as an artist and are working as a waiter, dont think of yourself as a waiter who hopes one day to become an artist. That puts the work you love somewhere off in the distant future. Rather, think of yourself as an artist, support yourself by waiting tables and paint or draw as much as you can. It is possible to earn a living wage as a waiter working 24 hours a week. That leaves plenty of time to devote to training or developing your craft(手艺).While seeking the work you love, it helps to better understand the universe of all possibilities. You dont want to limit the ideas of what you should do or what you have done before. Being open to all possibilities, you can make a final decision and select the work you love.Doing the work you love requires that you be equally comfortable with the imaginative and the practical. It requires the ability to dream big dreams and the ability to face and master all the little details that make dreams come true.21.Paragraph 1 & 2 are mainly about _.A. how Albert Einstein wrote his two most famous papersB. doing the work you love for nothingC. how to become an artistD. not giving up the work you love whatever you are doing22.If you work 24 hours a week, you can _.A. live a rich and comfortable lifeB. have enough spare time for your hobbiesC. have no time to make your dreams come trueD. have no energy to do a part-time job23.The underlined words “ the imaginative ” refer to _.A. big dreams B. all the little details C. your craft D. your awareness24.After we read the passage, we know _.A. the work of a waiter is relevant to that of an artistB. we should think of our experiences before making a final decisionC. Albert Einstein was unfit to work as a physics professorD. if we do the work we love and keep to it, well succeed in the endBI want to talk about the economyNot “the economy” we hear about endlessly in the news each day and in politicians speechesI want to talk about the real economy, the one we live in day by day. Most people arent particularly interested in “the economy”. “Share prices are flying high; interest rates are rising; the Dow Jones Index closed sixty-three points down on 8472. 35.” We hear this and subconsciously (潜意识地)switch off. Notice that “the economy” is not the same as the economy, “The economy” is what men in suits play with to make vast personal wealth. The economy is where the rest of us live on a daily basis, earning our living, paying our taxes, and purchasing the necessities of life. We are supposed to be benefiting from all the advantages of a well-off society. So why do we feel tired and stressed? We have no time for anything other than work, which is ridiculous considering the number of labor-saving devices in our lives. Our towns become more and more crowded. We poison our air and seas, and our food is full of chemicals. Theres something wrong here. If times were truly good, then you may think wed all feel optimistic about the future. Yet the majority of us are deeply worried. More than 90 percent of us think we are too concerned about ourselves and not concerned enough about future generations. The term “economic expansion” suggests something desirable, but expansion simply means spending more money. More spending doesnt mean that life is getting better. We all know it often means the opposite : greed, crime, poverty and pollution. More spending merely feeds our whole economic system, which is based on production and consumption. Unless money keeps circulating, the economy breaks down. If we dont keep consuming, the whole system goes into stalemate(僵局). How do we break the cycle and make some changes? We need to become far more aware of the results of our actions. We buy clothes that are made in sweat shops by virtual slaves in poor parts of the world. We create mountains of waste. We demand cheap food, mindless of the fact that it totally lacks taste and is produced using chemicals that poison the land. The consumption culture makes us unaware of the effect of our own behavior. Our main problem is not that we dont know what to do about it. It is gathering the desire to do it. 25.According to the author, which one belongs to the real economy? A. The Dow Jones Index. B. Increases in interest rates. C. Rapidly rising share prices. D. Shopping in a supermarket.26.It can be concluded from Paragraph 4 that_. A. people are benefiting from a well-off society B. the future generation is a big concern for most people C. the majority of people are optimistic about the future D. people still feel much pressure despite labor-saving devices27.What is true about economic expansion? A. It guarantees a better life for us. B. It may lead to some social problems. C. It will stop the circulation of money. D. It has only brought desirable effects.28.The author writes the passage mainly to_. A. call on us to change our behavior B. suggest a solution for over-consumption C. make a distinction between two economies D. inform us of the effects of economic expansionCI love charity shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you wont find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods. The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charitys appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful it had been flooded with donations. They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find childrens books, all 10 or 20 pence each. Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they dont encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open. The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than 110 million a year, funding medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money? You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment.29.The author loves the charity shop mainly because of _. A. its convenient location B. its great variety of goods C. its spirit of goodwill D. its nice shopping environment30.The first charity shop in the UK was set up to _.A. sell cheap products B. deal with unwanted things C. raise money for patients D. help a foreign country31.Which of the following is TRUE about charity shops?
