They lived and worked on a farm that has been in my family for 150 years. They raised chickens for eggs, pigs and cattle for meat. Cows were kept for milk and the cream, from which Grandma made butter and cheese. What little yard they had became a garden. The Depression, therefore, didnt make much change in their lives. But it did bring an unending flow of men out of work, drifting from job to job, to the farm. The first to show up at the door of the kitchen was a man in rags. He took off his hat and quietly explained that he hadnt eaten for a while. Grandpa stood watching him a bit , then said , “Theres a stack of firewood against the fence behind the barn (谷仓). Ive been needing to get it moved to the other side of the fence. You have just about enough time to finish the job before lunch.”Grandma said a surprising thing happened. The man got a shine in his eyes and he hurried to the barn at once. She set another place at the table and made an apple pie. During lunch, the stranger didnt say much, but when he left, his shoulders had straightened. “Nothing ruins a man like losing his self-respect,” Grandpa later told me.Soon after, another man showed up asking for a meal. This one was dressed in a suit and carried a small old suitcase. Grandpa came out when he heard voices. He looked at the man and then offered a handshake.” There is a stack of firewood along the fence down behind the barn Ive been meaning to get it moved. Itd sure be a help to me. And wed be pleased to have you stay for lunch.” The fellow set his suitcase aside and neatly laid his coat on top. Then he set off to work.Grandma says she doesnt remember how many strangers they shared a meal with during those Depression days-or how many times that stack of wood got moved.52When he was asked to move a stack of firewood, the first man who asked for a meal got a shine in his eyes for he was glad that .A. he had found a good job B. he would have something to eatC. he would no longer suffer from the DepressionD. he would get what he wanted without losing his self-respect53The writers grandfather asked those jobless men to move the stack of firewood because .A. he didnt want them to have a meal free of charge B. he had been needing to get it movedC. he wanted to help them in his own way D. he wanted to show them his kindness54The writers grandfather was all of the following but .A. kind B. thoughtful C. wealthy D. sympathetic55The best title for the story would be .A. The DepressionB. The Pleasure of Helping OthersC. No Pains, No Gains D. A new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows anger may help people reduce the negative impacts of stress and help you become healthier.“Here getting emotional is not bad for you if you look at the case of anger,” said Jennifer Lerner of Carnegie Mellon. “The more people display anger, the lower their stress responses.”Lerner studied 92 UCLA students by asking them to count back from 6,200. They must say out loud every thirteenth number. Researchers disturbed them by asking them to count faster or ask them other questions. If they made any mistakes, they had to restart from the very beginning. Many students felt depressed about making so many mistakes or got angry.Lerner used a hidden video camera and recorded all their facial expressions during the test. The researchers describe their reactions as fear, anger and disgust.Other researchers recorded the students blood pressure, pulse and production of a high-stress hormone(荷尔蒙) called cortisol. People whose faces showed more fear during the experiment had higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone. Both can have lasting effects such as diabetes(糖尿病), heart disease, depression and extra weight gain. When people feel fear, negative impacts increase, but when they get angry, those negatives go down, according to the study.“Having that sense of anger leads people to actually feel some power in what otherwise is a maddening (令人发狂的) situation,” Lerner said.Lerner previously studied Americans emotional response to the 911 terrorist attacks two months after the incident. She found people who reacted with anger were more optimistic. These people are healthier compared with those who were frightened during the event. So in maddening situations, anger is not a bad thing to have. Its a healthier response than fear.60. What is the story mainly about?A. The findings of new psychology research. B. What you can do with anger in certain cases.C. Different effects produced by anger and fear. D. Healthier responses in maddening situations.61. Which statement will Jennifer Lerner agree with?A. Its better to be frightened than to be angry. B. Different reactions reflect different outlooks on life.C. Dont control your anger and it makes you powerful. D. Pessimistic people are generally healthier.62. What does the underlined word “both” refer to according t
