Aging and health problems play a role in sunken eyes but other factors can contribute, so it may affect younger people as well.DehydrationThe most common cause of sunken eyes is dehydration, or not having enough water in the body. Consuming too much coffee, soda, and prepackaged drinks may increase production of urine (尿液), which may lead to dehydration.Vitamin shortagesShortages of vitamin C, vitamin K, and iron can cause eyes to become sunken. Vitamin C helps with absorbing iron and decreasing bruising (瘀斑), while vitamin K is responsible for blood thickening, causing unhealthy skin. Easy bruising and unhealthy skin will result in sunken eyes.Weight lossMost people tend to lose weight in their face first. Sometimes, the weight loss is sudden enough to make blood vessels (血管) below the eyes easy to see, and the skin clear, producing the appearance of sunken eyes. Sudden weight loss may also cause nutritional shortages, which can lead to sunken eyes. Not enough sleep or poor quality sleep can cause sunken eyes and a persons DNA or the habit of smoking can also contribute to sunken eyes. Most cases of sunken eyes relate to the quality of an individuals nutrition and healthy living. When these causes are corrected, sunken eyes can be resolved without further treatment. This means that causes can be avoided or treated in good time to prevent the recurrence of sunken eyes.21. What can we do to prevent dehydration according to the text?A. Refuse coffee. B. Drink more water.C. Say no to soft drinks. D. Have certain drinks less.22. What will lead to bruising below the eyes?A. Lack of vitamin K. B. Water shortages.C. Lack of vitamin C. D. He turns 100 this month, and the city is making preparations to celebrate him in style. Readings and performances and an open house will take place at City Lights, the sacred bookstore he co-founded in 1953.On March 24, 1919, Lawrence Ferlinghetti was born in Yonkers, New York. In 2001 it was made an official historic landmark. Now City Lights is almost certainly the best bookstore in the United States. Its filled with serious world literature of all kinds. If City Lights is a San Francisco institution, Ferlinghetti himself is as much of one. He has loomed over the citys literary life. Why doesnt ever-greater wealth promote ever-greater happiness? It is a question that dates at least to the appearance in 1958 of The Wealthy Society by John Kenneth Galbraith, who died recently at 97.The Wealthy Society is a modern classic because it helped describe a new moment in the human condition. For most of history, hunger, sickness, and cold “ threatened nearly everyone”, Galbraith wrote. “Poverty was found everywhere in that world. Obviously it is not of ours.” After World War II, the fear of another Great Depression gave way to an economic growth. By the 1930s unemployment had averaged 18.2 percent; in the 1950s it was 4.5 percent. To Galbraith, materialism (物质主义) had gone mad and would cause dissatisfaction. Through advertising, companies persuaded consumers to buy things they didnt really want or need. Because so much spending was artificial, it wouldbe unsatisfying. Meanwhile, government spending that would make everyone better off was being cut down because people wrongly considered government only as a necessary bad.Its often said that only the rich are getting ahead; everyone else isstanding still or falling behind. Well, there are many undeserving richoverpaid chief managers, for instance. But over any meaningful period, most peoples incomes are increasing. From 1995 to 2020, people feel squeezed because their rising incomes often dont satisfy their rising wantsfor bigger homes, more health care, more education, and faster Internet connections. The other great disappointment is that it has not got rid of insecurity. People regard job stability as part of their standard of living. As company unemployment increased, that part has gradually become weaker. More workers fear theyve becomethe disposable (用完即弃的) American, as Louis Uchitelle puts it in his book by the same name.Because so much previous suffering and social conflict resulted from poverty, the arrival of widespread wealth suggested utopian possibilities. Up to a point, wealth succeeds. There is much less physical suffering than before. People are better off. Unfortunately, wealth also creates new complaints.Advanced societies need economic growth to satisfy the multiplying wants of their citizens. But the search for growth cause new anxieties and economic conflicts that disturb the social order. Wealth sets free the individual, promising that everyone can choose a unique way to self-accomplishment. But the promise is so unreasonable that it leads to many disappointments and sometimes inspires choices that have anti-social consequences, including family breakdown. Figures indicate that happiness has not risen with incomes.Should we be surprised? Not really. Weve simply confirmed an old truth: the seeking of wealth does not always end with happiness.28. The Wealthy Society is a book _.A.about previous suffering and social conflict in the pastB.written by Louis Uchitelle who died at 97C.indicating that people are becoming worse offD.about why happiness does not rise with wealth29.According to Galbraith, people feel dissatisfied because _.A.materialism has run wild in modern societyB.they are in fear of another Great DepressionC.public spending hasnt been cut down as expectedD.the government has proved to be necessary but ugly30.Why do people feel squeezed when their average income rises considerably?A.They think there are too many overpaid rich.B.There is more unemployment in modern society.C.Their material demands go faster than their earnings.D.Health care and educational cost have gone out of control.31. What has wealth brought to American society?A.Stability and security. B.Materialism and content.C.A sense of self-accomplishment.D.New anxiety, conflicts and complaints.DWood has many great characteristics that make it the perfect building material. It is cheap, durable (耐用的), easily available, and most importantly, environmentally sustainable. The one thing it is not, is transparent (透明的). Now thanks to a team of scientists at Stockholms KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the material may even be able to add that feature to its already impressive list.Lead researcher Dr. Lars Berglund said he was inspired to create the transparent wood after learning how Japanese researchers had developed a see-through paper for use in flexible display screens for electronic devices. The team began by pulling out the woods lignin(木质素). The lignin-free wood was then dipped into a polymer (聚合物) and baked at a temperature of 158F for four hours. The result was a hybrid product that was not only stronger and lighter than the original wood but also, almost transparent. The researchers were able to adjust the level of transparency by varying the amount of the polymer injected and also by changing the thickness of the wood. While scientists have previously created a see-through wood for small-scale applications like computer chips, the transparent wood is the first one being considered for large-scale applications. The researchers, who revealed their findings in Biomacromolecules on April 11, picture using the transparent wood in buildings to allow for more natural light, or to create windows that let in the desired amount of light without sacrificing privacy.Wood that allows light to pass through could lead to a brighter future for homes and buildings. Berglund also thinks the wood could play a significant role in the design of solar panels. The semi-transparent material would be able to keep light longer and give it more time to interact with the conductor, thus resulting in better solar efficiency. Additionally, substituting the currently used glass with this new product would help solar energy manufacturers improve their carbon footprint and lower the cost. They are now experimenting with ways to scale up the manufacturing process so that the transparent material is cost-effective to make and easy to use.32. What does the underlined part that feature in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. Cheapness.B. Durability.C. Sustainability.D. Transparency.33. Which of the following is not the process in which the transparent wood is made?A. Dip the wood into a polymer.B. Reduce the amount of the polymer.C. Make the wood lignin-free.D. Bake the wood for some time.34. Which of the following is true according to the text?A. Berglund got the idea of transparent wood while making paper.B. Varying the amount of the polymer changes the woods hardness.C. The cost of making the transparent wood still needs to be cut down.D. The transparent wood would be used only for homes and buildings.35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. The bright future of the transparent wood. B. The woods role in the design of solar panels.C. The disadvantages of the currently used glass. D. Solar energy manufacturers carbon footprint.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。We all have days, or even weeks, on the job when our productivity declines.
