They dont even make sense when you first see them. However, using one of these phrases correctly when speaking or writing to an English speaker is very impressive and shows that you are comfortable with the language. Here are some wonderful and interesting British idioms. Use them wisely. When pigs fly! This expression is one of my favorites and I use it all the time. It is used primarily when speaking, meaning that something is extremely unlikely or impossible. For example, “I will forgive him when pigs fly!” “When do you think you will get a gym membership, Lucy?” “When pigs fly!”A penny for your thoughts? This question is used in a situation where someone appears thoughtful or is very quiet seeming lost in thought. But remember that you dont actually have to pay them a penny if they do tell you what is going on! For example, “Youve been a bit quiet this evening, Pete. A penny for your thoughts?”Its the bees kneesThe phrase dates back to the 1920s, and refers to an extraordinary person, thing, idea, and so on. For example, “Try this chocolate. Its the bees knees.”To feel a bit under the weatherI use this expression in many different situations but most use it to refer to feeling ill, or unwell. You would not use this phrase if you were feeling extremely unwell. It is only for those times when you are feeling a little ill or suffering from something slightly like a cold or a cough. However, this can also be used to refer to feeling emotionally low.21. What will you say if you think something is special?A. When pigs fly! B. A penny for your thoughts?C. Its the bees knees D. To feel a bit under the weather.22. Which of the following sentence can replace “A penny for your thoughts?”A. What can I do for you? B. What are you thinking about?C. How are you feeling? D. How do you like it?23. Why does the author write the passage?A. To introduce some useful idioms. B. To show how to remember idioms.C. To tell people the importance of idioms. D. To arouse the interest in idioms.BPeople diet to look more attractive. Fish diet to avoid being beaten up, thrown out of their social group, and getting eaten as a result. That is the fascinating conclusion of the latest research into fish behavior by a team of Australian scientists. The research team has discovered that subordinate fish voluntarily diet to avoid challenging their larger competitors. “In studying gobies we noticed that only the largest two individuals, a male and female, had breeding(繁殖) rights within the group, ”explains Marian Wong. “All other group members are non-breeding females, each being 510% smaller than its next largest competitor. We wanted to find out how they maintain this precise size separation.”The reason for the size difference was easy to see. Once a subordinate fish grows to within 510% of the size of its larger competitor,it causes a fight which usually ends in the smaller goby being driven away from the group. More often than not, the evicted fish is then eaten up.It appeared that the smaller fish were keeping themselves small in order to avoid challenging the boss fish. Whether they did so voluntarily,by restraining how much they ate, was not clear. The research team decided to do an experiment. They tried to fatten up some of the subordinate gobies to see what happened. To their surprise, the gobies simply refused the extra food they were offered, clearly preferring to remain small and avoid fights, over having a feast. The discovery challenges the traditional scientific view of how boss individuals keep their position in a group. Previously it was thought that large individuals simply used their weight and size to threaten their subordinates and take more of the food for themselves, so keeping their competitors small. While the habits of gobies may seem a little mysterious, Dr. Wong explains that understanding the relationships between boss and subordinate animals is important to understanding how hierarchical (等级的) societies remain stable. The research has proved the fact that voluntary dieting is a habit far from exclusive to humans. “As yet, we lack a complete understanding of how widespread the voluntary reduction of food intake is in nature,” the researchers comment. “Data on human dieting suggests that, while humans generally diet to improve health or increase attractiveness, rarely does it improve long term health and males regularly prefer females that are fatter than the females own ideal.”24. When a goby grows to within 510% of the size of its larger competitor, it_.A. faces danger B. has breeding rightsC. eats its competitor D. leaves the group itself25. The underlined words “the evicted fish” in Paragraph 3 refer to _.A. the fish beaten up B. the fish found outC. the fish fattened up D. the fish driven away26. The experiment showed that the smaller fish_.A. fought over a feast B. went on diet willinglyC. preferred some extra food D. challenged the boss fish27. What is the text mainly about?A. Fish dieting and human dieting. B. Dieting and health.C. Human dieting.D. Fish dieting.CJohn Steinbeck once said, “All American believe they are born fishermen. For a man to admit to a distaste in fishing would be like speaking publicly against mother-love or hating moonlight”.I cant say Im the biggest John Steinbeck fan. Actually, the only thing I can ever remember reading by him was “The Pearl” when I was in middle school, but I couldnt agree more with the man when it comes to fishing. When I am on a boat in the middle of the lay Lake, fishing off the shores of the Florida Keys for tarpon or catching rainbow trout in the Shoshone River of Wyoming. Fishing is my life.According to the American Sports Fishing Association, the fishing industry brings in more than $ 116 billion per year from fishermen across the country.Though a beautiful picture to imagine, fishing is much more than that. Fishing is a way of life from many people and a way to escape everyday stress. Being a fisherman makes me a member of a wonderful group of people extending to all walks of life. Even President Bush can be found fishing on his farm in Texas with his good friend Roland Martin when the jobs gets too stressful.I can remember fishing with my grandfather when I was 5 years old on his boat at Lake Michel. Although I didnt understand what I was doing, I did know that my grandfather was happy and that made me happy. Since then Ive spent the past 16 years on the rivers and lakes of Alabama. After days of practice, before and after work, I slowly developed an understanding of fishing. My boss, Ric Horst, took me back to the Shoshone, and I managed to bring in a 19-inch cutthroat trout. Fishing with Ric was a life-changing experience for me. He not only showed me how to fish correctly, but also told me how fishing could be a way to escape your problems.Since then, prime-time season seems to take forever to arrive. Now, with the ending of February and beginning of March is sight, the excitement of heading out to Lake Tus caloosa or Lake Lurleen before classes and catching something has finally returned.28What John Steinbeck said in the first paragraph implies that _AAmerican are believed to be the offspring of fishermen.Bit is unthinkable for an American to admit his dislike of fishing.CAll American are expert at fishing.DThose who dislike fishing would not love their mother.29The writer came to understand the real meaning of fishing _.AWhen he was reading “The Pearl” by John SteinbeckBWhen he went fishing with his grandfather at Lake MitchellCAfter he had spent 16 years on the rivers and lakes of AlabamaDAfter he went fishing with his boss, Ric Horst on the Shoshone30According to the author, _.APeople can get to know VIPs when fishingBPeople can smooth away all the troubles by fishingCFishing is a way of communicationDFishing is a way of life for most American people31What is the purpose of the writing?ATo describe the writers experience and understanding of fishing.BTo explain the reason why so many Americans like fishing.CTo make others understand the industry of fishing.DTo express his opinions about fishing in different time of the year.DA small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. Thats the finding of a study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce of salt water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish. The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But previous research has shown that the level of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces. For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish. At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol(胆固醇)levels.32The passage is mainly about _.Athe high incidence of heart disease in some countriesBthe changes in peoples dietCthe effect of fish eating on peoples healthDthe daily fish consumption of people in different cultures33We can infer from the passage that there are fewer heart disease deaths _.Ain countries of the yellow-skin raceBin highly-developed countriesCin the countries with high consumption of fishDin the countries with good production of fish34The phrase “this relationship” in paragraph 6 refers to the connection between _ and the level of heart disease.Athe amount of fish eatenBregular fish-eatingCthe kind of fish eatenDpeople of different areas35From the passage we know the author is most probably _.Aa heart doctor Ba science researcherCa supporter of healthy eatingDa university student第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。While everyone overthinks situations once in a while, some people are troubled by thinking all the time. Their minds are like a movie where they imagine their car going off the road or they replay distressing events over and over again. _36_Keep the focus on problem-solvingKeeping the focus on your problems isnt helpful-but looking for solutions is. If its something you have some control over, consider how you can prevent the problem or challenge yourself to identify five potential solutions. If its something you have no control over-like a natural disasterthink about the strategies you can use to cope with it. _37_Schedule time for reflectionWorrying about your problems for long periods of time isnt productive, but brief reflection can be helpful.
