Yet one of her books not only made her famous, but has been described as one that stirred the world, and played a part in bringing on a civil war and freeing the enslaved race. The civil war was the American Civil War of 1861, in which the Northern States fought the Southern State and finally won. The Southern states were the slave- owning states, and the matter of slavery was one of the quarrels between the two sides. This book that shook the world was called Uncle Toms Cabin. There was a time when practically every English-speaking man, woman and child had read this novel that did so much to abolish slavery. Not many people read it today, but it is still very interesting, if only to show how an enthusiastic (热情的) writer can arouse peoples sympathies(同情). The author herself had neither been to the Southern states nor seen a slave. The Southern Americans were very angry at the book, which they said did not at all stand for the true state of affairs, but the Northern American were wildly excited over it, and were so inspired by it that there were ready even to go to war to set slaves free. 46. The book, Uncle Toms Cabin, _. A. made a race into slavery freely B. was not so great as Oliver Twist C. caused the American Civil War D. was written during the American Civil War 47. C. “the book stirred the world” means the world developed a lot D. The two sides did not agree on slavery only. 49. The second paragraph tells us _. A. an enthusiastic writer can arouse peoples sympathies B. Uncle Toms Cabin is out of sight now C. the Southern Americans have been angry at Uncle Toms Cabin D. Uncle Toms Cabin moves the world once 50. In the writers opinion, _. A. Harriet Beecher Stowe was as famous as Dickens B. there was no American Civil War without Uncle Toms Cabin C. Uncle Toms Cabin was the product of the American Civil War D. Harriet Beecher Stowe was sympathized by people C Here is some information about making international phone calls. You can now phone any country in the world, although in some cases you can only call major cities. When you cant make direct dialing(直拨) calls, you can ask the international operator to help you. This is more expensive and takes more time, but it may be helpful if you want to speak to a particular person and no one else; in this case you should ask for a “person-to-person” call. Even more expensive is a reverse charge call where the person who receives the call pays. If the international line is busy you can reverse a call; explain the number you want the operator will call you back when the line is free. You can save money by calling outside office hours, e.g. early in the morning, late at night and on Sundays. Remember that the time may be different in the country you are calling. International time is based on GMT( Greenwich Mean Time); London is on GMT and Moscow. For example, is 3 hours ahead. There is one problem: change to DST (Daylight Saving time) for the summer. In the UK, clocks are put forward one hour in spring and put back in autumn, and so London is actually one ahead of GMT in the summer. 51. What is the most expensive type of call? A. Direct dialB. Throughout operator C. Reverse charge callD. Reserve a call 52. What can you do if the international line is engaged? A. Give an order for a call B. Gall on prime (最好的) time. C. Make a “person- to-person” call D. Call back outside office hours 53. When is it cheaper to make an international call? A. 10:00amB. 5:00pmC.11:00pmD.8:00 am 54. How many hours is Moscow ahead of London during the summer? A. 3B. 2C. 5D. 4 55. In the second paragraph, the word “ major” means _.
