Mr. Filio, one of the regular customers at the restaurant, was a retired colonel (上校) of the Philippine Army and had been a professor of the University of the Philippines for more than 20 years. He is one of the most intellectual people I know. Every Sunday the Philippine Star Newspaper had a special page of word puzzles and Mr. Filio held the record for completing them in less than five minutes. But one Sunday, I completed them before anyone else. He congratulated me with a smile, “No one has ever beaten me before. Youre the first and this is the last and for that Ill have a prize for you tomorrow.”The next day, he gave me an expensive Scrabble set and encouraged me to learn the game and love words. And the results of our later competitions were true to his words. That happened three years ago and I didnt see him again until yesterday when I went to a restaurant to drink coffee. He was still as sharp and smart as he was before. If it werent for his physical deterioration (恶化), no one would have ever guessed that he had survived lung cancer, two major heart attacks and was now battling a kidney (肾) disease. We exchanged updates about our lives. When I told him I got married and that I had decided not to pursue law school anymore, I felt embarrassed, because I knew that he believed in me and in a way, I was letting him down.Somehow, he seemed to sense my awkwardness and what he said to me is something I will never forget.“Kate, what do you think is humans final goal in life? Yet that is exactly what one man did a man named Sequoyah.Born around 1770 in Tennessee, Sequoyah was a Cherokee. Like other Native Americans of that time, he could neither read nor write. He couldnt help noticing, though, how white people wrote to one another on sheets of paper. They often used these “talking leaves”, as some Native Americans called them, to communicate.Back then, the Cherokee had no way to write down words in their own language. Sequoyah believed it was important for the Cherokee to have a system of writing. So, in 1809, he set out to create an alphabet that the Cherokee could use to do just that.Sequoyah started by drawing pictures, with each one representing a different word or idea. He soon realized that writing sentences using pictures would be much too difficult. There were too many words. No one would ever be able to remember that many pictures.Sequoyah decided to try a different approach. He began to develop symbols to stand for the sounds, or syllables, which made up words. Twelve years later, he completed a system of writing with 86 different symbols. Each one stood for a different syllable in the Cherokee language. The symbols could easily be put together to form words. Soon thousands of Cherokee were able to read and write in their own language.Sequoyahs work did not end there, however. He helped to establish a print shop and began publishing a bilingual (双语的) newspaper in both Cherokee and English. The shop also printed books translated from English into Cherokee. In later years, Sequoyah also became a political leader among the Cherokee.Sequoyah died in 1843, but many Cherokee of today still use the alphabet he invented. Thanks to him, the Cherokee now have a written history that will never be forgotten. In honor of his achievements, Sequoyahs name was given to the giant redwood trees of California and the Sequoia National Park. The name of Sequoyah will never be forgotten either.43. Well, you could buy the next best thing, an electroluminescent rug (场致发光地毯) which lights up while you walk on it. This would surely be one of the future floor fashion devices found in everyones home. However, you will have to wait a bit before it will be marketed. The new rug called Footlume was developed by Leona Dean and Zoe Robson, two engineering students from the London South Bank University. It makes use of rechargeable batteries which power the lights of the rug. The rug produces light through electroluminescence which uses electric fields to emit (发出) visible light.Other means to produce light involve photoluminescence (光致发光) which uses substances that absorb light to experience an excited state after which light is re-emitted into the medium, and chemoluminescence (化学发光) which produces light during chemical reactions between light- -producing substances.“It could be helpful as a childs night light, to help the elderly to find their way in the dark, or even to light the way to bed after a night in the bar without waking up your partner. It is pressure-operated and runs on very little power from rechargeable batteries, and it can be used anywhere in the home,” said co-inventor Leona Dean. When asked how the two inventors got the idea for the product, they said, “We often use our mobile phones to light our way in the dark. By using the same light source, electroluminescent panel (显示板) and transferring it into a pressure activated rug, we have created an energy efficient alternative to turning on a light switch.”The new rug is expected to be exhibited this month at the Daily Mail Ideal Home Show in London.47. According to the passage, the new rug will give out light _.A. after turning on the switch on itB. only when humans step on itC. as long as the room is dark enoughD. whenever pressure is applied to it48.
