I worked hard, only to fail at last.Altogehter Dolly lived six and a half years, half the length of the life of the original sheep.Check-up:1.The word “controversial” in para 4 probably means _.A. complicated B. arguable C. important2.In the second paragraph, the word “straightforward” means _.A. uncomplicated B. honest C. frank D. difficult3.How many female sheep participate in the cloning of a new sheep?. Consolidation:Cloning is a way of making an exact of another animal or plant. It has two major uses. First, it can be used to produce quantities of plants for and this is very simple. Second, it is valuable foron new plant species and for medical research on animals. But this kind of cloning is very . With the efforts of scientists, Dolly the sheep came into the world in 1996. The whole world was about the appearance of Dolly. But soon they was to hear the disturbing news that Dolly had become seriuosly ill. After living through six and a half years, Dolly died. The same fate happened to other species, such as cloned mice. Something they have in common is that they all live than the original animals. In the meantime, Dollys appearance raised a storm of . Some people was worried that evil leaders could clone themselves to their ambitions and cloning may raise questions. However, some people are cloning human beings. They think scientists can produce human embryos for medical and use cloned humans for organ transplants. At present governments are very . Some countries research into human cloning, but other countries continued to evidence of the abundant medical aid that cloning could provide. Where is cloning leading us? Only time can tell.Homework:1.Read the passage again and find out all the noun clauses in the text.2. It is reported recenlty that a controversial doctor in America claimes to have cloned human embryos and transferred them to four women prepared to give birth to the first cloned babies.美国“克隆狂人”扎沃斯Write a short passage according to the following topic: Should human cloning be allowed?学习效果评估.Challenge yourself:Read the following discussion about cloning and choose the most suitable summary from this list marked A, B, C, D and E for each paragraph of the text in Boxes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Notice there is extra heading in the list.1I definitely dont think that human cloning should be permitted. It should be banned. I dont understand how cloning a mammal was allowed . I think it is unethical because if human cloning begins, sooner or later these scientists will believe they are “gods” they want to do something that is not intended for them. Its not their job to create humans I think our society will become a disaster if isnt on its way already.2People seem to misunderstand what the phrase “human cloning ” means. When they say that theyre for it, they explain the cloning of stem cells, which I think is major good. And when against it, theyre talking about cloning a whole human, which I think might be very destructive in the long run. Does “human cloning ” mean cloning a human or cloning human cells?3I think cloning should and shouldnt be allowed. Heres what I mean. Say you keep cloning an endangered animal. I mean, itll help the economic system, but itll also result in the wipe out of that endangered species if a certain virus hit the animal. Cloning can be good also. If one of your organs goes “bad”, then you can replace it with the healthy clones organ. No more donating organs.4I agree with it because it has great benefits and can do a lot for our world and society. Some people do not want it because of religion or ignorance. This is a wonderful techonology that we should use. It can cure cancer and give transplants to people who need them. So I think anyone that is against it is ignorant. If it was one of their family members that needed a transplant, will they still object to cloning so strongly?Expressions to choose from: A. Cloning, a disaster to animals.B. A new technology. Why not?C. Cloning goes against ethics.D. Cloning? It depends.E. What “human cloning” refers to counts.Complementary reading:Debate Follows US Finding That Cloned Animals Are SafeThe United States government has decided that food from cloned cattle, pigs and goats is safe to eat. The Food and Drug Administration also says it found no risks in meat and milk from offspring born to them.A clone is a genetic copy of an animal prized for its quality. A laboratory process develops a cell from the animal into an embryo. The embryo is put into a female animal which, if all goes well, gives birth to the clone. The F.D.A. looked at studies for several years before it announced its decision in a final report this month. The United States Department of Agriculture supported the findings. But it says time is needed to smooth the way for marketing meat and milk from clones. So, for now, the industry is being asked to continue a voluntary ban on such products. The idea of eating cloned animals rates low with the American public. Several major food companies say they have no immediate plans to get involved. The Food and Drug Administration will not require any product to be identified as coming from clones or their offspring. A producer would need approval to label a product clone-free. The agency says that could be misleading because the food is no different from other food. But activists argue that the F.D.A. based its decision on incomplete research into possible risks. The Center for Food Safety criticized the use of studies supplied by cloning companies.Animal rights activists point out that cloning attempts often fail. They say cloning is cruel and can lead to suffering in clones born with abnormalities.Congress has been trying to get the F.D.A. to do more studies. But the agency noted that experts in New Zealand and the European Union have come to the same findings about the safety of food from clones.Japan, South Korea and Taiwan say they want to study the issue further before taking action.Products from cloning may not be widely available for several years. Currently the United States has about six hundred animal clones.Clones are costly, which is why most are used for breeding. The Agriculture Department says few clones will ever become food. Their traditionally bred offspring would enter the food supply instead. The first mammal cloned from an adult cell was Dolly the sheep, born in Scotland in nineteen ninety-six. But the F.D.A. says it could not decide about the safety of food from clones of sheep or other animals besides cattle, pigs and goats. Two Identical MenIs it true that there is no perso
