Unit 3 AustraliaPart One: Teaching DesignPeriod 1: A sample lesson plan for reading(GLIMPSES OF AUSTRALIA and others)AimsTo help students develop their reading abilityTo help students learn about AustraliaProceduresWarming up by leaning something about Commonwealth of AustraliaThe Commonwealth of Australia is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the worlds smallest continent and a number of islands in the Southern, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Australias neighbouring countries are Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the northeast, and New Zealand to the southeast. The continent of Australia has been inhabited for over 40,000 years by Indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the north and by European explorers and merchants starting in the 17th century, the eastern half of the continent was claimed by the British in 1770 and officially settled as the penal colony of New South Wales on 26 January 1788. As the population grew and new areas were explored, another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were successively established over the course of the 19th century. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth Realm. The current population of around 20.4 million is concentrated mainly in the large coastal cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.Warming up by looking and sayingLook at the photo? What is it?Yes, it is a Tammar Wallaby. The Tammar Wallaby is a small member of the kangaroo family and is the type species for research on kangaroos and marsupials. They are found on offshore islands on the South Australian and Western Australian coast. They are classified as vermin on Kangaroo Island, where they seasonally breed up to large numbers and damage the echidna habitat on the island.Tammar Wallabies are also found in New Zealand where they were transported from the South Australian mainland population which has since been driven to extinction by feral cats and foxes. Also known as the Darma Wallaby, the Tammar Wallabys small size (approx 8kg, similar to a large cat) and ease of keeping in captivity makes it a popular zoo animal.Warming up by listening to THE SONG OF AUSTRALIATHE SONG OF AUSTRALIAThere is a land where summer skiesAre gleaming with a thousand dyes,Blending in witching harmonies, in harmonies; And grassy knoll, and forest height,Are flushing in the rosy light,And all above in azure bright -Australia!There is a land where honey flows,Where laughing corn luxuriant grows,Land of the myrtle and the rose,On hill and plain the clustring vine,Is gushing out with purple wine,And cups are quaffed to thee and thine -Australia!There is a land where treasures shineDeep in the dark unfathomed mine,For worshippers at Mammons shrine,Where gold lies hid, and rubies gleam,And fabled wealth no more doth seemThe idle fancy of a dream -Australia!There is a land where homesteads peepFrom sunny plain and woodland steep,And love and joy bright vigils keep,Where the glad voice of childish gleeIs mingling with the melodyFor natures hidden minstrelsy -Australia!There is a land where, floating free,From mountain top to girdling sea,A proud flag waves exultingly,And freedoms sons the banner bear,No shackled slave can breathe the air,Fairest of Britains daughters fair -Australia!I. Chickens come home to roost. drive/hammer something home, eat someone out of house and home, hit a home run, hit/strike home, a home away from home, Home is where the heart is. The lights are on but nobodys/no-ones home. make yourself at home, nothing to write home about, Whats something when its at home?2 Australia has more kinds of venomous snake than any other country in theworldHowever, the majority have no effect on humans or cause only mild sickness澳洲毒蛇的类型超过全球任何其他国家。 The number of +名词复数+单数动词。A number of books have lent out. The majority of the students like English.3However,although they look dangerous because of their wide mouths and sharp teeth, all but two or three kinds are harmless to humans然而,虽然他们因为宽嘴和利齿看起来危险,但是除了两三种以外几乎都对人无害。句中but意思是except, used to indicate the exception to a statement just made。例如:He could do nothing but stand and watch her leave. There was nothing but a lump of moldy bread in the drawer.3 There are no more than a handful of shark attacks each year and only three deathshave been reported in the last five years每年只会发生七八起鲨鱼对人的攻击,而过去五年只有三次死亡报告。句中a handful of是一种量词用法,类似的例子还有:a drove of horses(一群马), a flock of goats(一群山羊), a herd of elephants(一群大象), a pack of wolves(一群狼), a pride of lion(一群狮子), a skulk of foxes(一群狐狸)4. Treatments for jellyfish stings and snakebites have also been developed and in the last five years there have been only three deaths from jellyfish stings and about the same number from snakebites已经研制出针对水母蛰伤和毒蛇咬伤的治疗办法,过去五年,因为水母蛰伤和毒蛇咬伤致死的个案都是三例。句中There be句型是一种复杂时态用法。例如:There is going to be a meeting tonight.今晚有个会议。There was a knock at the door.有人敲门。There has been a girl waiting for you.有个女孩一直在等你。There will be rain soon.不久天就要下雨了。Reading comprehension questions1.
