Unit 3 Period 5 Task (1) - Listening for figuresThe General Idea of This Period:The period is to master the way to listen to figures correctly.Learn and master the forms of figures.Teaching Aims:1.Enable the students to learn to use cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers and how to identify specific numbers when listening.2.Help the students to learn how and when to use cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers and how to identify specific numbers when listening.Teaching Important & Difficult Point:How to make a note of figures correctly and quickly.Teaching Method:Individual learning ,Reading, explaining and PracticeTeaching Aids:1, the multimedia2, the blackboardTeaching Procedures:Step 1 GreetingsGreet the students as usualStep 2 Revision and Lead-inT: Nice to meet you, boys and girls. Before we begin our lesson, lets check the homework.Get the students to write down cardinal numbers in order, tell them how to spell and read them. Second, ask the students to write down ordinal numbers and describe in what situations ordinal numbers are used. Third, ask the students to talk about situations in which numbers are used. Ask them to translate and read some sentences with numbers. Finally, get the students to go over Points I to 4 on page 52.1. Cardinal numbersT: Please write down the following cardinal numbers and then read them aloud.11-19, 20-23, 30-90, 102, 1,682, 1,000,000, 1,560,434, 10,000,000Sample answers:11-19 eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen20-23 twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three30-90 thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety102 one hundred and two1,682 one thousand six hundred and eighty two1,000,000 one million1,560,434 one million five hundred and sixty thousand four hundred and thirty four10,000,000 ten millionT: Good! When we listen and read the numbers such as fifteen and fifty, eighteen and eighty, we must pay special attention to the word stress. Now I want to tell you I have a large number of books. But I am not sure of exact number. Can I say I have hundred of books?S: No, you cant. You should use hundreds of, thousands of or hundreds of thousands here.T: Excellent! And ask the students to pay special attention to the spelling forms of fifth, and ninth.T: When do we usually use ordinal numbers?SI: When we talk about the date, we use the ordinal numbers, such as 1st January. And when we want to talk about something in order, we also use ordinal numbers, such as on the third floor, the second one on the left.T: Any other situations?S2: We use cardinal and ordinal numbers at the same time when we talk about fractions such as1/3, one third, 3/4, three fourths.Situations in which numbers are used.T: Great! Fourths is the plural form, and thirtys plural form is thirties. Now I will read some sentences and you must write down the numbers. The students write down the numbers, when the teacher reads the sentences in Part 1 on page 52.T: If we can make a note of figures accurately, it will be of great help when we listen to a conversation. But in which situations are numbers used? Figures can refer to different things. Can you make some sentences in which numbers are used?S1: We use numbers to talk about time, date, age, price, street number, percentage, etc.(Ask some students to read their sentences and write them down on the Bb.)1. We will meet at 8 oclock.2. Tom was born on 17th December 1988.3. Lucy is 164. Susan bought a T-shirt for $20.5. Ye Ping lives at 198 Jiangsu Road.6. 60 percent of students are boys in this class.T: Sometimes we are not sure of the numbers. How to express an approximate number or to modify a number? Please read the sentences in Part 4 on page 52.S2: I know we can use about, more than, or so, over, around, under, at least and at most.Step 3 PracticeFirst, read out some numbers in English and let the students to say them in Chinese. Then ask the students to listen to the tape and fill in the figures they have heard.T: Listen to me carefully, please. I will read some numbers in English. Please say them in Chinese. The students listen and say what they hear in Chinese.T: Now we are going to listen to an interview with Steve Fossett and fill in the figures.(Then check the answers with the students.)Step 4 Finding a speakerGet the students to listen to the headmasters requirements for a speaker and fill in the note sheet. Then the students will complete an advertisement with what they have heard.T: The headmaster wants to find a person to speak to the school. He will talk about what kind ofperson he needs. Make notes and then write an advertisement. Now read the sheet first to getsome useful information.(Students read and then listen to the tape and fill in the sheet.)T: OK.
