For the past seven years, Simon Thorrold, a university professor, has been examining fish ears, small round ear bones called otoliths(耳石). As fish grow, so do their otoliths. Each day, their otoliths gain a ring of calcium carbonate(碳酸钙). By looking through a microscope and counting these rings, Thorrold can determine the exact age of a young fish. As a fish gets older, its otoliths no longer get daily rings. Instead, they get yearly rings, which can also be counted, giving information about the fishs age, just like the growth rings of a tree. Ring counting is nothing new to fish scientists. But Thorrold has turned to a new direction. Theyre examining the chemical elements(元素)of each otolith ring. The daily ring gives us the time, but chemistry tells us about the environment in which the fish swam on any given day. These elements tell us about the chemistry of the water that the fish was in. It also says something about water temperature, which determines how much of these elements will gather within each otolith ring. Thorrold can tell, for example, if a fish spent time in the open ocean before entering the less salty water of coastal areas. He can basically tell where fish are spending their time at any given stage of history. In the case of the Atlantic croaker, a popular saltwater food fish, Thorrold and his assistant have successfully followed the travelling of young fish from mid-ocean to the coast, a journey of many hundreds of miles. This is important to managers in the fish industry, who know nearly nothing about the whereabouts (行踪) of the young fish for most food fish in the ocean. Eager to learn about his technology, fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears.31 . What can we learn about fish ears from the text?AThey are small soft rings.BThey are not seen from the outside.CThey are openings only on food fish.DThey are not used to receive sound.32 . What does the underlined word “they” in the second paragraph refer to?AfishBfish earsCfishs otolithsDdaily rings33 . Why does the writer compare the fish to trees?ATrees gain a growth ring each day.BTrees also have otoliths.CTheir growth rings are very small.DThey both have growth rings.34 . Why is it important to study the chemistry of otolith rings?AThe elements of the otoliths can tell the history of the sea.BChemical contents of otoliths can tell how fast fish can swim.CWe can know more about fish and their living environment.DScientists can know exactly how old a fish is.35 . What is the main idea of the passage?AIt is true that fish have ears.BFish ears can tell us how old they are.CWe can learn a lot from fish ears.DFish scientists have done a lot of studies on fish ears.Whether you like it or not, your parents are responsible for you, at least until you re out of high school. But does it feel like your parents are stressing you out with their love? Do you often fight with them?Hu Muqing, 16, of Shenyang, complains that his parents only care about his grades and not his other needs. However, I need to be able to relax. Most of my friends can watch TV and surf the Web a lot. Sometimes its hard to talk to them.” After some negotiations (商谈), Hu has been allowed to watch TV for 15 to 20 minutes every night, but has been told to keep away from the computer.Shen Ying, 17, of Jianyang, Sichuan Province, feels she has grown up now. So she wants more respect(尊重) from her parents. “My father shouted at me when hes in a bad mood. They think she spends too much time with her friends and is falling into bad company. “I want trust(信任) from my parents,” Lu said. Its the age when teenagers are becoming more independent, but their parents care very much about their kids futures, said Sun Yunxiao, a senior researcher at the China Youth and Children Research Center. Sun suggests that teenagers should learn to communicate with their parents effectively. “Find the right time for a talk. On Mothers Day or Fathers Day, say Thank you to your parents or give them a small gift with a letter so they can get inside your head a little,” he advised. Sun also believes that teenagers have to work to get trust and respect from their parents. “You need to make sure they know that you re not going to screw up(搞砸) your exams or let them down. Let them know that you want to do well, and that you will do well” he said.36 .
