Youre not even the same personyou were five years ago. We dont just mean your personality. While wed love tostart a never-ending discussion over the “true self”,were here to talk about thecells(细胞)in your body.Do you know how your fingernails and hair are constantly growing and replacingthemselves? The same thing happens almost everywhere in your body. Your outerlayer of skin makes way for fresher skin, and inside your veins(血管),blood cells turn over to make wayfor fresh blood. Its probably no surprise that these types of cells are short-lived, even some of the mostseemingly permanent(永久的)parts of your body replace themselves over time-including your bones.Strong as your bones might seem, the cells theyre made of wont last a lifetime. Bones are masters at rebuilding themselves, which is why most broken bones can heal on their own into the right shape.Bones have special cells called osteoclasts(破骨细胞)whose job is to break down bone, even if itisnt broken, and send the minerals into the blood stream. This may sound frighteningly like your bonesare wearing away, but your body knows what its doing. As osteoclasts break down bone, osteoblasts(成骨细胞)build up new bone to replace the old. By the end of each year, about 10 percent of yourentire adult skeleton will have been rebuilt through this process. If 10 percent of your bone breaks down every year, it must take about ten years to renew 100percent of your skeleton. That would be a great guess, and it lines up nicely with the medical myth thatthe human bodys cells are fully replaced every seven years, but the body is a bit more complex. That10 percent is just an average-some bone grows faster than that, and some grows slower. While someparts of your bone will turn over quickly, other parts will stick around for decades. In fact, most bonecells could live as long as 50 years. So before you get wrapped up in an identity crisis(危机)about the cells in your body disappearingon you, know that you can lose some hair and you can cut your nails, but the bones of you arent goinganywhere-at least not very soon and not all at once.26 . Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?AAll the cells in our body are the same ones that we were born with.BOur blood cells are constantly growing and replacing themselves.CIt must take about 10 years to rebuild 100 percent of our skeleton.DOsteoblasts can break down skin and also rebuild it over time.27 . The underlined words wearing away probably mean“”Abuilding upBtaking offCdying outDturning on28 . What does the passage mainly talk about?AOur skeleton seems permanent but renews itself over time.BIt is not surprising that some cells in our body are short-lived.CThere are two types of cells in our bones: osteoclasts and osteoblasts.DWe are not the same person we were five years ago because of personality. In his book Why Do I Love These People? , author Po Bronson tells a true story about a great elm tree(榆树). The tree was planted in the first half of the 20th century on a farm in Michigan, US. In the 1950s, the family that owned the farm kept a bull chained to it. The bull walked around the tree, pulling a heavy iron chain, which made a groove(刻沟)in the tree about a meter off the ground. The groove deepened over the years, though for whatever reason, it didnt kill the tree. After some years, the family sold the farm and took their bull with them. They cut the chain, leaving most of it hanging down from the tree. Eventually, bark(树皮)slowly covered the old chain. Then one year, disaster struck Michigan in the form of Dutch elm disease. It left a path of death across vast areas. All of the elms lining the road leading to the farm were infected and died. Everyone figured that the old elm tree would be next. There was no way the tree could last, with its age and the chain hanging off its trunk(树干). The farms new owners considered pulling the chain out and chopping the tree up into firewood before it died. But they simply couldnt bring themselves to do it. It was as if the old tree had become a family friend, so they decided to let nature take its course. Amazingly, the tree didnt die. Year after year, it thrived(茁壮成长). Nobody could understand why it was the only elm still standing in the whole area. Tree experts from Michigan State University came out to study the tree later, examining the scar left by the iron chain. The experts decided that it was actually the chain that saved the elms life. They reasoned that the tree must have absorbed so much iron from the chain that it became immune to Dutch elm disease. Its said that what doesnt kill you will make you stronger. So if youre ever in Michigan, look for that beautiful elm tree. Look for the wound made by the chainit serves as a reminder that even with wounds, we can still have hope. Our wounds can give us the resources we need to cope(应付)and survive. They can truly make us strong.29 .
