He didnt look cross that day so she went to speak to him.“The springs coming,” he said to her. “Can you see those green points in the earth?”Mary looked.“What are they?” she asked.“Theyre spring flowers.” Then the robin appeared and sat on the ground near them.“Is spring coming in the secret garden, too?” Mary asked Ben.“Ask the robin,” said Ben, “Hes the only one who knows.” And he went back to work. The robin was hopping around on the ground. I can tell you now that it is probably more than half, whether youre on public transport, in a cafe or simply walking down the street.Im not saying that I am not an example of this, but it always amazes me how people can spend so much time on their phones without actually talking to anyone in particular. With the constant upgrade of technology we can now do practically anything on a device which can fit in the palm of our hands. But has it gone too far? Do we spend too much time on our mobiles and not enough time talking to people in real life? For example. I recently visited London and travelled on the tube while I was there. Apart from the people asleep, almost everybody else was on their phones, and because of the nature of the tube, it is difficult not to see exactly what they are all doing. Of course, being underground it is difficult to get any signal, which rules out texting or using the internet, but there is still plenty you can use your phones for. People were playing games, reading articles and listening to music, and I am sure that as soon as they emerged from the train station they would start texting or calling or checking their emails. There is a constant connection to everyone in the world, as long as you have a mobile phone in your hand.Recently, my smart phone broke and had to be sent off to the warehouse for repair for a week or so. In the meantime I had to use a really old, basic phone just to keep me in touch with my family and friends. All I could do on this phone was sending text messages, making calls and playing one game. And I loved it. I loved being free from the internet, and I really didnt mind not having constant updates about what my friends were doing or what the latest celebrity story was. It was quite refreshing and it allowed me to spend more time taking in my surroundings-I could enjoy my time in London more, for example, and I could watch the people around me and really see what was going on.However. I knew that as soon as I got my smart phone back I would be one of those people once again, obsessed with finding out what everyone is doing and wasting my time playing games or checking social network sites. Perhaps I should just go back to using the basic phone and forget I ever got my smart phone back30 . What can we know from the third paragraph?APeople are trying to connect their friends on the tube.BThe writer complains theres no signal on the tube.CPeople rely on their mobile phones too much.DWed choose a proper place for texting or using the internet.32 . Whats the fourth paragraph mainly about?AThe reasons why he liked to use his smart phone.BThe advantages and disadvantages of an old, basic phone.CWhat he could do on his old, basic phone.DHow the writer felt when he wasnt controlled by his smart phone.33 . Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?AAre mobile phones taking over our lives?BAre smart phones more useful than old ones?CTalking to people face to face or on mobile phones?DSending text or talking on mobile phones?Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device (装置) which uses satellites (卫星) to find the users position(位置). It can find your position to within 20 meters. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street. There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates (计算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well. Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate. There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.34 . Here are some suggestions: Cook from the fridgeStart with the fresh foods. If you have some in the fridge, use them first. Make a meal with what you have got instead of running out to the supermarket for something else. Learn to read the labels“Best-before” and “use-by” dates are more important. Learn to know the different periods of foods and know how to cook them in the right way. For example, black bananas are proper for baking, fresh vegetables are good in soups, and bread that is not fresh can be turned into small pieces. Use the freezer(冷冻室)The freezer can keep foods fresh until you are ready to cook them, and store the cooked foods until youre ready to eat them. Its also the best place for the remaining food. Mark the date of the food nearby, so its easy to find the foods you need to eat first and you will never leave them there for too long.Shop with a listPlan meals ahead of time so that you know exactly what to buy.
