In the West this figure might come to mind when we think of mime. Mime is the art of acting without using speech. The word can also refer to a person who performs this art. This type of art has grown and changed over the centuries. What began as a simple form of communication is now a form of theater._Mime is one of the earliest forms of self-expression. As languages were developing, humans still used their bodies to speak. Mime first became an art form in ancient Greece. Silent actors performed everyday scenes using gestures (动作). These plays often taught a lesson about values. When the Romans got control of Greece, they took the art of mime to Italy. There they made it their own. Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, mime remained. In the mid-1500s mime became a form of street performance in Italy. Mime performers wore masks and acted out comedies. Because masks hid their faces, they could make fun of any part of a situation in society. Everyone enjoyed the performanceyoung and old, rich and poor. Mime also traveled around Europe. Because the art had no words, there was no language problem. Mime became especially popular in France. French performers created famous mime characters which shape todays mime.Mime like a ProfessionalWant to try mime? To communicate only through body language; no talking allowed. Unlike most of the Netherlands, Hilversum is actually in a hilly area with the soil mostly consisting of sand. Once called the Garden of Amsterdam, it still attracts travelers to come over to cycle and walk through the surrounding forests. They visit it for a relaxing day off from the urban madness. For Dutch people, Hilversum is all about textile (纺织) and media industries, and modern architecture. In history, Hilversum was largely an agricultural area. Daily life was marked by farming, sheep raising and wool production. A railway link to Amsterdam in 1874 attracted rich traders from Amsterdam to Hilversum. They build themselves large villas (别墅) in the wooded surroundings of the town. One of the families moving in was the Brenninkmeijers, currently the wealthiest family of the Netherlands. They moved in after big success in the textile industry and aided a substantial textile industry in Hilversum. But the textile boom lasted only several decades. The last factory closed in the 1960s. The change to a media economy started in 1920, when the Nederlandse Seintoestedllen Fabriek (NSF) established a radio factory in Hiversum. Most radio stations called in the large villas in the leafy areas of the town. Television gave another push to the local economy. Hilversum became the media capital of the Netherlands, and Dutch television stars moved into the leafy neighborhoods surrounding the town. In the early 1900s, modern architects W.M. Dudok and J. Duiker placed hundreds of remarkable buildings in Hilversum. These modern architectural masterpieces (杰作) are so many that Hilversum almost feels like an open air museum. Dudok alone shaped most 20th century Hilversum and approximately 75 buildings in 1928-1931. It has wide international fame and is included in many architecture textbooks. The building has a remarkable shape and looks like a combination of “blocks”. Actually, one may start his journey of modern architecture by walking or biking the W.M. Dudok Architectural Route in Hilversum.23. However, Experts believe that only 5% of our decisions are based on a rational (理性的) thought process. So, what influences our decision-making process? We often leave decision-making to our instincts (本能). Scientists have found out that if we had the choice, we like to avoid pain rather than get something. In fact, were twice as happy when we try to avoid a bad situation than when we experience a good one. This is why when companies send ads, they use phrases like “How to avoid.“, ”Dont miss out!”, etc. There are also physical reasons that affect our decision-making. Psychologist (理学家) John Bargh carried on an experiment where people were asked what they thought of a fictional person, while holding a cold or a hot cup of coffee. Those holding the hot cup believed the person to be warmer and more sociable than those holding the cold cup. So, when temperatures rise, the more likely we are to believe in strangers.Stress is another thing which affects our decisions. Different situations are more or less stressful for different people. Researchers have found, though, that women are more conservative (保守的) about decisions when stressed, while men are to make riskier choices. It may come as a surprise but every day from the minute we get up, we have to make countless decisions, like what to wear, what coffee to have and so on. Each choice makes our brain a little bit more tired, and this affects our decision making. Thats why important people, like presidents wearing the same three suits all the time, want to limit the small choices and spend more brain power on the bigger ones.27. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?28. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Every day we have to make lots of big decisions.B. People sometimes judge a person by what he wears.C. What people wear influences their decision making.D. Making fewer decisions helps to save brain power.29. What can we learn from the passage?A. We make most of the decision after our careful thinking.B. People are likely to be happier to avoid something bad.C. As the temperature is low, we are likely to believe others.D. People usually have risky decision under heavy pressure.30. The purpose of the passage is to _.A. tell us what influences decision-makingB. advise people to make rational decisionsC. warn people not to make risky decisionsD. show disadvantages of rational decisionsE下面文章有五处(第31-35题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E、F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。How Can You Create Luck in Everyday Life? You can probably agree that some people have more good things happening to them.
