theOldChurchBell(WrittenfortheSchillerAlbum)byHansChristianAndersen(1861)INthecountryofWurtemburg,inGermany,wheretheacaciasgrowbythepublicroad,wheretheapple-treesandthepear-treesinautumnbendtotheearthwiththeweightofthepreciousfruit,liesthelittletownofMarbach.Asisoftenthecasewithmanyofthesetowns,itischarminglysituatedonthebanksoftheriverNeckar,whichrushesrapidlyby,passingvillages,oldknightscastles,andGREenvineyards,tillitswatersminglewiththoseofthestatelyRhine.Itwaslateintheautumn;thevine-leavesstillhunguponthebranchesofthevines,buttheywerealreadytintedwithredandgold;heavyshowersfellonthesurroundingcountry,andthecoldautumnwindblewsharpandstrong.Itwasnotatallpleasantweatherforthepoor.Thedaysgrewshorterandmoregloomy,and,darkasitwasoutofdoorsintheopenair,itwasstilldarkerwithinthesmall,old-fashionedhousesofthevillage.Thegableendofoneofthesehousesfacedthestreet,andwithitssmall,narrowwindows,presentedaverymeanappearance.Thefamilywhodweltinitwerealsoverypoorandhumble,buttheytreasuredthefearofGodintheirinnermosthearts.AndnowHewasabouttosendthemachild.Itwasthehourofthemotherssorrow,whentherepealedforthfromthechurchtowerthesoundoffestivebells.Inthatsolemnhourthesweetandjoyouschimingfilledtheheartsofthoseinthehumbledwellingwiththankfulnessandtrust;andwhen,amidstthesejoyoussounds,alittlesonwasborntothem,thewordsofprayerandpraisearosefromtheiroverflowinghearts,andtheirhappinessseemedtoringoutovertownandcountryintheliquidtonesofthechurchbellschime.Thelittleone,withitsbrighteyesandgoldenhair,hadbeenwelcomedjoyouslyonthatdarkNovemberday.Itsparentskisseditlovingly,andthefatherwrotethesewordsintheBible, “OnthetenthofNovember, 1759,Godsentusason.”Andashorttimeafter,whenthechildhadbeenbaptized,thenameshehadreceivedwereadded, “JohnChristopherFrederick.”Andwhatbecameofthelittlelad?thepoorboyofthehumbletownofMarbach?Ah,indeed,therewasnoonewhothoughtorsupposed,noteventheoldchurchbellwhichhadbeenthefirsttosoundandchimeforhim,thathewouldbethefirsttosingthebeautifulsongof“TheBell.”TheboyGREwapace,andtheworldadvancedwithhim.Whilehewasyetachild,hisparentsremovedfromMarbach,andwenttoresideinanothertown;buttheirdearestfriendsremainedbehindatMarbach,andthereforesometimesthemotherandhersonwouldstartonafinedaytopayavisittothelittletown.Theboywasatthistimeaboutsixyearsold,andalreadyknewaGREatmanystoriesoutoftheBible,andseveralreligiouspsalms.Whileseatedintheeveningonhislittlecane-chair,hehadoftenheardhisfatherreadfromGellertsfables,andsometimesfromKlopstocksgrandpoem, “TheMessiah.”Heandhissister,twoyearsolderthanhimself,hadoftenweptscaldingtearsoverthestoryofHimwhosuffereddeathonthecrossforusall.OnhisfirstvisittoMarbach,thetownappearedtohavechangedbutverylittle,anditwasnotfarenoughawaytobeforgotten.Thehouse,withitspointedgable,narrowwindows,overhangingwallsandstories,projectingonebeyondanother,lookedjustthesameasinformertimes.Butinthechurchyardtherewereseveralnewgraves;andtherealso,inthegrass,closebythewall,stoodtheoldchurchbell!Ithadbeentakendownfromitshighposition,inconsequenceofacrackinthemetalwhichpreventeditfromeverchimingagain,andanewbellnowoccupieditsplace.Themotherandsonwerewalkinginthechurchyardwhentheydiscoveredtheoldbell,andtheystoodstilltolookatit.Thenthemotherremindedherlittleboyofwhatausefulbellthishadbeenformanyhundredyears.Ithadchimedforweddingsandforchristenings;ithadtolledforfunerals,andtogivethealarmincaseoffire.Witheveryeventinthelifeofmanthebellhadmadeitsvoiceheard.Hismotheralsotoldhimhowthechimingofthatoldbellhadoncefilledherheartwithjoyandconfidence,andthatinthemidstofthesweettonesherchildhadbeengiventoher.Andtheboygazedonthelarge,oldbellwiththedeepestinterest.Hebowedhisheadoveritandkissedit,old,thrownaway,andcrackedasitwas,andstandingthereamidstthegrassandnettles.Theboyneverforgotwhathismothertoldhim,andthetonesoftheoldbellreverberatedinhishearttillhereachedmanhood.Insuchsweetremembrancewastheoldbellcherishedbytheboy,whoGREwupinpovertytobetallandslender,withafreckledcomplexionandhairalmostred;buthiseyeswereclearandblueasthedeepsea,andwhatwashiscareertobe?Hiscareerwastobegood,andhisfuturelifeenviable.Wefindhimtakinghighhonorsatthemilitaryschoolinthedivisioncommandedbythememberofafamilyhighinposition,andthiswasanhonor,thatistosay,goodluck.Heworegaiters,stiffcollars,andpowderedhair,andbythishewasrecognized;and,indeed,hemightbeknownbythewordofcommand“March!halt!front!”theoldchurchbellhadlongbeenquiteforgotten,andnooneimagineditwouldeveragainbesenttothemeltingfurnacetomakeitasitwasbefore.Noonecouldpossiblyhaveforetoldthis.EquallyimpossiblewouldithavebeentobelievethatthetonesoftheoldbellstillechoedintheheartoftheboyfromMarbach;orthatonedaytheywouldringoutloudenoughandstrongenoughtobeheardallovertheworld.Theyhadalreadybeenheardinthenarrowspacebehindtheschool-wall,evenabovethedeafeningsoundsof“March!halt!front!”Theyhadchimedsoloudlyintheheartoftheyoungster,thathehadsungthemtohiscompanions,andtheirtonesresoundedtotheverybordersofthecountry.Hewasnotafreescholarinthemilitaryschool,neitherwasheprovidedwithclothesorfood.Buthehadhisnumber,andhisownpeg;foreverythingherewasorderedlikeclockwork,whichweallknowisoftheGREatestutilitypeoplegetonsomuchbettertogetherwhentheirpositionanddutiesareunderstood.Itisbypressurethatajewelisstamped.Thepressureofregularityanddisciplineherestampedthejewel,whichinthefuturetheworldsowellknew.InthechieftownoftheprovinceaGREatfestivalwasbeingcelebrated.Thelightstreamedforthfromthousandsoflamps,andtherocketsshotupwardstowardsthesky,fillingtheairwithshowersofcoloredfierysparks.Arecordofthisbrightdisplaywillliveinthememoryofman,forthroughitthepupilinthemilitaryschoolwasintearsandsorrow.Hehaddaredtoattempttoreachforeignterritoriesunnoticed,andmustthereforegiveupfatherland,mother,hisdearestfriends,all,orsinkdownintothestreamofcommonlife.Theoldchurchbellhadstillsomecomfort;itstoodintheshelterofthechurchwallinMarbach,oncesoelevated,nowquiteforgotten.Thewindroaredaroundit,andcouldhavereadilyrelatedthestoryofitsoriginandofitssweetchimes,andthewindcouldalsotellofhimtowhomhehadbroughtfreshairwhen,inthewoodsofaneighboringcountry,hehadsunkdownexhaustedwithfatigue,withnootherworldlypossessionsthanhopeforthefuture,andawrittenleaffrom“Fiesco.”Thewindcouldhavetoldthathisonlyprotectorwasanartist,who,byreadingeachleaftohim,madeitplain;andthattheyamusedthemselvesbyplayingatnine-pinstogether.Thewindcouldalsodescribethepalefugitive,who,forweeksandmonths,layinawretchedlittleroad-sideinn,wherethelandlordgotdrunkandraved,andwherethemerry-makershaditalltheirownway.Andhe,thepalefugitive,sangoftheideal.Formanyheavydaysanddarknightstheheartmustsuffertoenableittoenduretrialandtemptation;yet,amidstitall,wouldtheminstrelsing.Darkdaysandcoldnightsalsopassedovertheoldbell,anditnoticedthemnot;butthebellinthemansheartfeltittobeagloomytime.Whatwouldbecomeofthisyoungman,andwhatwouldbecomeoftheoldbell?theoldbellwas,afteratime,carriedawaytoaGREaterdistancethananyone,eventhewarderinthebelltower,everimagined;andthebellinthebreastoftheyoungmanwasheardincountrieswherehisfeethadneverwandered.Thetoneswentforthoverthewideoceantoeverypartoftheroundworld.Wewillnowfollowthecareeroftheoldbell.Itwas,aswehavesaid,carriedfarawayfromMarbachandsoldasoldcopper;thensenttoBavariatobemelteddowninafurnace.Andthenwhathappened?IntheroyalcityofBavaria,manyyearsafterthebellhadbeenremovedfromthetowerandmelteddown,somemetalwasrequiredforamonumentinhonorofoneofthemostcelebratedcharacterswhichaGermanpeopleoraGermanlandcouldproduce.Andnowweseehowwonderfullythingsareordered.Strangethingssometimeshappeninthisworld.InDenmark,inoneofthoseGREenislandswherethefoliageofthebeech-woodsrustlesinthewind,andwheremanyHunsgravesmaybeseen,wasanotherpoorboyborn.Heworewoodenshoes,andwhenhisfatherworkedinaship-yard,theboy,wrappedupinanoldworn-outshawl,carriedhisdinnertohimeveryday.Thispoorchildwasnowtheprideofhiscountry;forthesculpturedmarble,theworkofhishands,hadastonishedtheworld.1Tohimwasofferedthehonorofformingfromtheclay,amodelofthefigureofhimwhosename, “JohnChristopherFrederick,”hadbeenwrittenbyhisfatherintheBible.Thebustwascastinbronze,andpartofthemetalusedforthispurposewastheoldchurchbell,whosetoneshaddiedawayfromthememoryofthoseathomeandelsewhere.Themetal,glowingwithheat,flowedintothemould,andformedtheheadandbustofthestatuewhichwasunveiledinthesquareinfrontoftheoldcastle.Thestatuerepresentedinliving,breathingreality,theformofhimwhowasborninpoverty,theboyfromMarbach,thepupilofthemilitaryschool,thefugitivewhostruggledagainstpovertyandoppression,fromtheouterworld;Germanysgreatandimmortalpoet,whosungofSwitzerlandsdeliverer,WilliamTell,andoftheheaven-inspiredMaidofOrleans.Itwasabeautifulsunnyday;flagswerewavingfromtowerandroofinroyalStuttgart,andthechurchbellswereringingajoyouspeal.Onebellwassilent;butitwasilluminatedbythebrightsunshinewhichstreamedfromtheheadandbustoftherenownedfigure,ofwhichitformedapart.Onthisday,justonehundredyearshadpassedsincethedayonwhichthechimingoftheoldchurchbellatMarbachhadfilledthemothersheartwithtrustandjoythedayonwhichherchildwasborninpoverty,andinahumblehome;thesamewho,inafter-years,becamerich,becamethenoblewoman-heartedpoet,ablessingtotheworldtheglorious,thesublime,theimmortalbard,JohnChristoperFrederickSchiller!在德意志的公国符腾堡,金合欢树在大道旁花繁叶茂,苹果树、梨树被成熟的果实压弯了枝子,那儿,有一座小城,马尔巴赫。它属於不值得提起的那类城市,但是它在奈加河畔,很幽美。奈加河急匆匆地流过一些城市,一些古代骑士的堡寨和长满绿葱葱的葡萄的山丘,要把自己的水注入莱茵河之中。那是岁末的时候,葡萄叶子已经露出红色,雨一阵阵洒下,寒风吹了起来。对贫寒的人家,这可不是好受的日子。白昼昏暗,那些老旧矮小的房子里显得更黑。在街上就有这样一所房子,山墙朝着街道,窗户开得很低,看去很简陋。住在里面的人实在也是贫寒的。可是他们很善良、勤劳,内心中总怀着对上帝的爱戴与崇敬。上帝很快便要赐给他们一个小孩。时刻已经到了,母亲躺在里面经受着阵痛和难过。这时从教堂的钟楼上给她传来了钟声,很是深沉,很是欢快。这是一个庄严的时刻,钟声注满了这位在虔诚祈祷和富於崇敬心的人。她的心真诚地飞向上帝。就在这个时候,她感觉到了她的儿子,她感觉到了无止境的欢乐。教堂的钟好像敲出了她的欢乐,把她的欢乐带向整个城市、整个国土。一双婴儿的眼睛望着她,婴孩的头发在发光,就好像是镀了金一样1.世界在十一月一天的黑夜里,在钟声中迎接了这个婴儿。父亲和母亲亲吻着他,他们在自己的圣经上写下:“一七五九年十一月十日,上帝赐给了我们一个儿子。”后来又添写上,他在受洗礼时得到了“约翰
