Many bridges were built on the river, so the name of the city cameCambridge. It was a combination of transliteration and free translation. It means bridges of Cam River. By the way, the bridge of Cambridge, is one of the worlds oldest bridges. The location The city of Cambridge is a university town and the administrative centre of the county of Cambridgeshire. It lies in East Anglia about 50miles (80 km) north-by-east of London. Cambridge is also at the heart of the high-technology centre known as Silicon Fen a play on Silicon Valley(硅谷) and the fens surrounding the city. This is a map of Cambridge and some other cities near it. The left one is the relationship between Cambridge and London(north east). History there are six historical periods in Cambridge. The Cambridge Rules were first played on Parkers Piece and had a defining influence on the 1863 Football Association rules. As for water sports, the most famous was punting, and we will talk about it later. The University of CambridgeThe University of Cambridge was founded in 1209. Today, it has 800s history. So it is one of the worlds oldest universities and leading academic centers, and it is a self-governed community of scholars. Mathematic bridgeIt is said that the bridge was built by Newton without a screw, but then a curious student took the bridge apart. As a result, he couldnt restore it. So the only thing he could do was to create a screw bridge. punting?A punt is a narrow flat-bottomed boat that somewhat resembles a Venetian gondola(威尼斯小艇) with the curve removed. Punts generally seat up to four adults while a fifth person stands at the rear and propels the boat with a long pole. Punting along the River Cam is one of the traditional delights of visiting Cambridge, and something that should be tried - at least once - by everyone! Poling along the river looks effortless and easy; a relaxing way to enjoy a quiet summer afternoon. However, steering(驾驶) a punt is not as easy as it looks. For one thing, the pole can get stuck in the mud of the river bottom, and steering from the rear of a punt takes skill and dexterity(熟练). But dont worry, it doesnt take long to get the hang of things, and it really is a great deal of fun! Cambridge Arts TheatreCambridge Arts Theatre is a 666-seat theatre in central Cambridge. The theatre presents a varied mix of drama, dance, opera and pantomime(哑剧). It attracts some of the highest-quality touring productions in the country, as well as many shows direct from, or prior to, seasons in the West End(伦敦西区). Its annual Christmas pantomime is an established tradition in the city.
