StandardBLike many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future but with no real idea of what I wanted to do. My degree, with honours, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. Thats when I learned about the Lighthouse Project.I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family.Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out. After completing my training, I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me. Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and I returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever.25. What do we know about the author?A. His university education focused on the theoretical knowledge.B. His dream at university was to become a volunteer.C. He took pride in having contributed to the world.D. He felt honoured to study English literature26. In his application for the volunteer job, the author _.A. participated in many discussionsB. went through challenging survival testsC. wrote quite a few papers on voluntary workD. faced strong competition from other candidates27. What can we infer from the authors experience in Nigeria?A. He found some difficulty adapting to the local culture.B. He had learned to communicate in the local language.C. He had overcome all his weaknesses before he left home.D. He was chosen as the most respectable teacher by his students.CHappy birthday ! Do birthdays really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthdays celebrate the day we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity -or so we hope. We all like to imagine that were getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the miracle of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process(过程). But growing old? Thats a different story.Growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in youth-oriented American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “Youre as young as you feel.” Older people joke about how many years young they are , rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favour those that are young, or at least “young at heart”.Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden. Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by. Retirement at age 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care and housing. Some even experience age discrimination (歧视). In 1987, American sociologist Pat Moore dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was treated rudely-even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living together. Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged “baby boomers” are rapidly entering the groups of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles(皱纹) are “in”. Marketing experts are already noticing this group of consumers (消费者).28. The main idea of the third paragraph is _.A. the golden years can make the old earn lots of moneyB. many old people in America are leading a hard lifeC. the old in America have to retire at the age of 65D. American social security benefits are not good29. From the last paragraph we know that the underlined word “in” can be replaced by _.A. serious B. bad C. disappearing slowly D. growing fast30. From this passage we can know _.A. in America, growing up is not a wonderful processB. in America, growing up is as wonderful a process as growing old.C. in America, growing up is a wonderful process, while growing old is notD. in America, growing old is a wonderful process, while growing up is not31. What should be mentioned in the following paragraph?A. The public will change their attitude towards old peopleB. People will provide more services to the old in their communitiesC. Companies will soon produce more goods for old AmericansD. The government will pass laws to ensure the benefits of the peopleDAll adults at some time or another commit (犯罪) a crime, sometimes by accident, but why do some people intentionally commit crimes? Here are three theories that try to explain the causes of criminal behavior.GENETIC (遗传的) CAUSESThe idea that some people commit crimes because of biological causes has a long tradition. This theory suggests that criminals are born, not made. In the 19th century some people even thought brain sizes and skull shapes could explain criminal behavior. Although experts today no longer believe this, they do argue that human behavior can be linked to an individuals genes. Studies of adopted children who show criminal behavior suggest that their behavior is more similar to their biological parents behavior than their adoptive parents, showing a genetic link.ENVIRONMENTThis theory states that a persons surroundings influence their behavior. Just as children learn good behavior from their parents and brothers or sisters, children can learn bad behavior from their families and other close relationships. Researchers in this area argue that early anti-social (反社会的) behavior in childhood often leads to a future of criminal behavior. It is a dangerous circle, as one expert states: “Problem children are likely to grow up into problem adults, and problem adults are likely to produce more problem children.”CHOICEThe central idea of this theory is that crime is a career decision, an alternative (可选择的) way of making a living. The theory argues that most criminals are sensible people, who know what they want and the different ways of getting it, i.e. work or crime. They are able to balance the risks of committing a crime, such as going to prison, against its benefits, i.e. what they gain if they arent caught. The conclusion is: if there are benefits than risks, do it, but if there are more risks than benefits, dont do it.Research is continuing into peoples motivation for committing crimes as understanding this may help us apply the correct punishments for crime. It is important to understand the causes of crime. With more knowledge, it will be easier to prevent crime and to help criminals to lead a more useful life.32. What do experts today believe according to Paragraph 2?A. Criminals are partially related to genes.B. Someones physical features are a cause of crime.C. Adopted children are more likely to commit crimesD. Adoptive parents behavior decides childrens deeds.33. What does the second theory include?A. A family determines a childs future.B. Relatives play a key role in a persons crime.C. Uneducated children tend to become criminals.D. The environment greatly influences peoples behavior.34. According to the text, criminals _.A. consider what they can lose and gain in a crimeB. dont think before they decide on a life of crimeC. tend to believe they can avoid the risks of a crimeD. often achieve their goals through crime instead of work35. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Types of crimesB. Crimes and punishmentsC. Why do people commit crimes?D. What influences will crimes have?第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。How to Think PositivelyQuite often when we are going through a challenging time, we may get the advice to just “think positively!” 36 Does it mean to deny (否认) our pain or discomfort? Should we pretend(假装) everything is alright? Here is some advice about how to think positively.Accept that you are here to grow. Life doesnt always go smoothly. Lifes lessons can be difficult, but they are even more so if you approach them with avoidance(逃避). 37Learn to turn lemons into lemonade(柠檬水). Look for the lessons to be learned in every situation. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself when things dont go your way, do what you can to make the best of the situation. Learn, instead, how to avoid falling into the same traps and making the same mistakes. 38 .Believe in yourself. 39 Your dreams and goals are an indication of where your talents lie and where your true potential is. Needless to say, you must develop your inherent(固有的) gifts.Look for inspiration and support. Read about and study the successful stories of others. Many successful people have gone through challenging circumstances to get where they are. 40 To help you stay positive and focused, get support from family and friends. Finally, thinking positively doesnt mean being unrealistic. It means dealing with life and lifes challenges as they are. It means being willing to do the work necessary to get on with the business of living fully.A. If you see them as opportunities to become stronger, you are thinking positively and productively.B. So next time a well-meaning person tells you to think positively, just smile back confidently.C. Learning about their experiences can motivate(激发) and inspire you to achieve what you want to achieve.D. Sometimes its difficult to figure out exactly what that means.E. Know that you have what it takes to succeed.F. It just means that you wont let them stop you!G. By doing so, you will undoubtedly benefit from it. As is known to all, plants normally grow in soil.
