The day is June 10. It has been snowing for the past four days in the Bitterroot Mountains. Wayne Fairchild is worried about our trek over the Lolo Trail-95 miles from Lolo Montana to Weippe in Idaho, across some of the roughest country in the West. Lewis and Clark were nearly defeated 200 years ago by snowstorms on the Lolo. Today Fairchild is nervously checking the weather reports. He has agreed to take me across the toughest, middle section of the trail. When Lewis climbed on top of Lemhi Pass, 140 miles south of Missoula, on Aug 12, 1805, he was astonished by what was in front of him:“ high mountain chains still to the West of us with their tops partially covered with snow.” Nobody in what was then the US knew the Rocky Mountains existed, with peaks twice as high as anything in the Appalachians back East.Today their pathway through those mountains holds more attraction than any other ground over which they traveled, for its raw wilderness is an evidence to the character of two cultures: the explorers who braved its hardships and the Native Americans who prize and conserve the path as a sacred(神圣的)gift. It remains today the same condition as when Lewis and Clark walked it.The Lolo is passable only from July to mid-September. Our luck is holding with the weather, although the snow keeps getting deeper. As we climb to Indian Post Office, the highest point on the trail is at 7,033 ft. We have covered 13 miles in soft snow, and we hardly have enough energy to make dinner. After a meal of chicken, I sit on a rock on top of the ridge (山脊). There is no light visible in any direction, not even another campfire. For four days we do not see another human being. We are occupied with the things that mixes fear with joy. In our imagination we have finally caught up with Lewis and Clark.31. We learn from the passage that before 1805 .A. the Rocky Mountains were wholly covered with snowB. there were no people living in the western part of AmericaC. no Americans knew of the existence of the Rocky MountainsD. the Appalachians were the western frontier of the United States32. Judging from the passage, the word “ trek” (Paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to_.A. a comfortable walk in a separate countryB. a pleasant journey across the countrysideC. a journey over un-traveled pathwaysD. a long, hard journey over rough areas33. We learn from the passage that the Lolo Pass .A. has changed a lot since 1805 B. remains much the same as it was 200 years agoC. is the meeting point of three cultures D. now attracts a large number of tourists to visit 34. Judging from the passage, Lewis and Clark were most probably .A. two native Indians B. merchants who did business with the IndiansC. explorers of the early 19th century D. travelers whose curiosity took them over the Lolo Pass35. We can infer from the passage that in crossing the Lolo Pass the author .A. was attempting the impossible B. was trying to set a world recordC. was following the track of Lewis and ClarkD. was fighting with weather and taking unnecessary risks【B】If you still need to relax and want to head overseas, dont miss out some great deals on accommodation and air fares at some of the worlds top off-peak travel hotspots. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, an expert in human-computer interaction, it is a combination of the two. We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype (网络电话软件). He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS equipped car to use during his stay. Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasnt until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of garbage in garbage out .”Mr. Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. Barry Brown: “One problem with a lot of the GPS units is that they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know whether its going to a wrong place.”Barry Brown once worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in peoples cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS”. It lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues (时机问题) related to when GPS commands are given. Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.41. In Paragraph 2,Mr. Brown mentioned his friend in the conversation to .A. build up his own reputation B. laugh at his stupid friendC. prove the GPS system is only garbage D. describe an example of human error42. What is the disadvantage of small screens in GPS equipment according to the text?A. They just provide the next turn. B. They are harmful to eyes.C. They make drivers tired easily. D. They often break down suddenly.43. With which of the following statements would Barry Brown most likely agree?A. GPS units are to blame for most GPS service failures.B. We should introduce higher standards for the driving license.C. Cameras are urgently needed to help improve GPS systems.D. Drivers, GPS systems and passengers should unite to improve GPS systems.44. What is Mr. Browns attitude towards GPS?A. Unconcerned.B. Prejudiced. C. Objective. D. Critical.45. What would be the best title for the text?A. Driving with GPS can be difficultB. Driving confusions can be caused by small screensC. Driving without GPS should be much more convenientD. GPS equipment in driving: to be deserted or improved?【D】Throughout the nations more than 15,000 school districts, widely differing approaches to teaching science and math have appeared. Though there can be advantages in diversity, a new international analysis suggests that this diversity has instead contributed to lower achievement scores by US children relative to their peers in other developed countries. Indeed, concludes William H. Schmidt of Michigan State University, who led the new analysis, “No single well-accepted view of education governs or regulates US educational practice in math or science.” He said, “The reason is because the education system is deeply and fundamentally flawed (有缺陷的)”The new analysis, released this week by the National Science Foundation in Arlington. Va. , is based on data collected from about 50 national as part of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. Not only do approaches to teaching science and math differ among individual US communities, the report finds, but there appears to be little strategic focus (战略重点) within a school districts curricula, its textbooks, or its teachers activities. Its sharply different from the uniform national programs of most other countries. On average, US students study more topics within science and math than their international peers do. This creates an educational environment that “is a mile wide and an inch deep.” Schmidt says. For instance, eighth graders in the United States cover about 33 topics in math but just 19 in Japan. Among science courses, the international gap is even wider. US curricula for this age group resemble those of a small group of countries including Australia, Thailand, Iceland, and Bulgaria. Schmidt asks whether the United States wants to be grouped with these nations, whose educational systems “share our pattern of educational visions” but which are not economic leaders in the world. The new report “couldnt come at a better time.” says Gerald Wheeler, executive director of the National Science Teachers Association in Arlington. “The new National Science Education Standards provide that strategic focus,” including the call “to do less, but in greater depth.”Carrying out the new science and math standards will be a big challenge, he and Schmidt agree, because the decentralized responsibility (权限分散) for education in the United State requires that any reform be adapted to one community at a time. In fact, Schmidt argues, reforms such as national standards “face an almost impossible task, because even though they are well accepted, each becomes only one more voice in the educational system.”46. According to Paragraph 1, the teaching of science and math In America is .A. focused on developing students potential B. characterized by its diversityC. losing its brilliance gradua
