The People in Canada Speak English.BHere are a few tips weve put together to help you learn English well.Speak, speak, speak!Practice speaking as often as you caneven speaking to yourself is good practice. Try recording yourself whenever you can. Compare your pronunciation with the master version, see how you can do better and have another try. If you do this several times, you will find that each version is better than the last. Why not learn with someone else?It helps if you can learn with someone else. If you can persuade a friend or family member to study with you, it will make you keep working. Agree times to meet and set goals for the week, and test each other regularly.Dont get stuck by a word you dont knowPractise improvising (即兴的) ways of getting your meaning across while speaking spontaneously (本能), even if you dont know the exact words or phrases. Think of things you might want to say whenever you have spare time. A basic example is the use of tenses. If you dont know the past tense but want to talk about yesterday, use the verb in the present tense and use the word for “yesterday”. Use facial expressions, hand movements, anything to get your meaning across.Language learning is also about intuition (直觉)Guesswork is important in learning a new language. When listening to recorded material, you arent expected to understand everything first time round. If you play the same piece several times, you will most probably understand something new each time. Learn to make maximum use of all the clues you can pick up. For example, what do the speakers sound like? Happy? Angry? Calm? Etc.Build up your vocabularyA wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning but dont try to learn too much at once. Its best to study frequently, for short periods of time. Take a maximum of six or seven items of vocabulary and learn them. Put them into sentences to fix them in your mind, then come back to them later. Much of the vocabulary in the course is presented by topic. And above all, have fun!6. What is the main idea of this passage?A. How to practice speaking. B. What to do to build up your vocabulary.C. How to learn with someone else. D. How to learn English well7. Why should one have himself recorded when practicing speaking?A. To encourage others to start. B. To record his own progress.C. They are social insects, living together in colonies. They build their houses to suit the climate of the place where they live, and they live almost everywhere in the world.Like people, ants distribute the work to be done. Some worker ants get food and feed it to young ants. They are like farmers gathering food for people to eat. When the young ants eatthe food, they give out a liquid that the grown-up ants can eat. In some colonies, the ants feed liquid food to a few special workers. These workers store it in their stomachs, which become very large. They spend all their time in the nest giving out liquid to whoever needs it, just like the person who runs a store.Ants are ruled by a queen ant. She spends all her time laying eggs, and the worker ants take care of her. New queens come to rule a colony in many different ways. One kind of ant queen can go into another colony and kill the old queen. Another kind can take some workers with her from her mothers nest and start a new colony of her own. Another kind of ant queen takes her young with her and hides in some other colony. She gets some of the workers to feed her young instead of the old queens young. In this way she becomes strongest in the colony, and she rules. Some ants form armies and fight battles with other colonies, but not all ants are fierce. Somelive in peace with their neighbors.11. It was still too early for me to have my evening meal, so I walked along the seafront for about an hour until I began to feel hungry. By that time I was not far from a favorite restaurant of mine, where I often went to eat two or three times a week. I knew the owner well and frequently complimented him on his excellent cooking.I went into the restaurant, which was already crowded, and ordered my meal. While I was waiting for the soup to arrive, I looked around to see if I knew anyone in the restaurant. It was then that I noticed that a man sitting at a corner table near the door kept glancing in my direction, as if he knew me. I certainly did not know him, for I never forget a face. The man had a newspaper open in front of him, which he was pretending to read, though all the while I could see that he was keeping an eye on me. When the waiter brought my soup, the man was clearly puzzled by the familiar way in which the waiter and I addressed each other. He became even more puzzled as time went on and it grew more and more obvious that I was well known in the restaurant. Eventually he got up and went into the kitchen. After a few minutes he came out again, paid his bill and left without another glance in my direction. When I had finished and was about to pay my bill, I called the owner of the restaurant over and asked him what the man had wanted. The owner was a little embarrassed by my question and at first did not want to tell me. I insisted. “Well,” he said, “that man was a detective.” “Really?” I said, considerably surprised. “He followed you here because he thought you were a man he was looking for,” the owner of the restaurant said. “When he came into the kitchen, he showed me a photograph of the wanted man. He certainly looked like you! Of course, since we know you here, I was able to convince him that he had made a mistake.” “Its lucky I came to a restaurant where I am known,” I said, “otherwise I might have been arrested!”16.
