Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked AB C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. It is hard to track the blue whale ,the oceans largest creature which has almost been killed off by commercial whaling and is now listed as an endangered species. Attaching radio devices to it is difficult and visual sightings are too unreliable to give real insight into its behavior. So biologists were delighted early this year when with the help of the Navy they were able to track a particular blue whale for 43 days monitoring its sounds. This was possible because of the Navys formerly top-secret system of underwater listening devices spanning the oceans. Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwater listening system built over the decades to track the ships of potential enemies.Earth scientists announced at a news conference recently that they had used the system for closely monitoring a deep-sea volcanic eruption (爆发) for the first time and that they plan similar studies. Other scientists have proposed to use the network for tracking ocean currents and measuring changes in ocean and global temperatures. The speed of sound in water is roughly one mile a second-slower than through land but faster than through air. What is most important different layers of ocean water can act as channels for sounds focusing them in the same way a stethoscope (听诊器) does when it carries faint noises from a patients chest to a doctors ear, is focusing is the main reason that even relatively weak sounds in the ocean ,especially low-frequency ones can often travel thousands of miles. 21. The passage is chiefly about _.A an effort to protect an endangered marine species. B the civilian use of a military detection system. C the exposure of a U.S. Navy top-secret weapon.D a new way to look into the behavior of blue whales. 22. The underwater listening system was originally designed _.A to trace and locate enemy vessels B to monitor deep-sea volcanic eruptions C to study the movement of ocean currents D to replace the global radio communications network 23. The deep-sea listening system makes use of _. A the sophisticated technology of focusing sounds under water B the capability of sound to travel at high speed C the unique property of layers of ocean water in transmitting sound D low-frequency sounds traveling across different layers of water24. It can be inferred from the passage that_.A new radio devices should be developed for tracking the endangered blue whalesB blue whales are no longer endangered with the use of the new listening system C opinions differ as to whether civilian scientists should be allowed to use military technology D military technology has great potential in civilian use 25. Which of the following is true about the U.S. Navy underwater listening network?A It is now partly accessible to civilian scientists.B It has been replaced by a more advanced system. C It became useless to the military after the cold war. D It is indispensable in protecting endangered species.Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.Play is the principal business of childhood, and in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy, every child needs opportunity and the right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys. Their main function is to suggest, encourage and assist play. To succeed in this they must be good toys, which children will play with often, and will come back to again and again. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a childs development. In recent years research on infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities, is largely determined in the first three years of his life. So a babys ability to profit from the right play materials should not be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged and stimulated, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully. In the next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toy should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability. Bricks and jigsaws(七巧板)and construction toys; painting, scribbling(涂鸦) and making things; sand and water play; toys for imaginative and pretending play; the first social games for learning to play and get on with others. By the third stage of play development-from five to seven or eight years-the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the children most enjoys. Until the age of seven or eight, play and work mean much the same to a child. But once reading has been mastered, then books and school become the main source of learning. Toys are still interesting and valuable, they lead on to new hobbies, but their significance has changed to a child of nice or ten years, toys and games mean, as to adults, relaxation and fun. 26 The passage tells us that as a child grows up_.A he should be allowed to choose his own toys. B he should be given identical toys. C he should be given different toys. D he should be given fewer and fewer toys. 27 According to the passage, the abilities a child has inherited from his parents _.A determine his character.B will not change after the age of three. C partly determine the standard he is likely to reach. D to a large extent determine the choice of toys. 28 Who have the best chance of growing up successfully? A Those who tend to overeat B Those who are given a lot of toys. C Those who are given toys, talked to and played with. D Those who can share their toys with their playmates.29 We learn from the passage that a child has boundless curiosity _.A when he is twoB when he is around four. C when he is six. D when he is eight. 30 The passage is mainly about_. A the importance of pre-school education B the importance of schooling. C the role of play in a childs development.D the choice of toys for adults.Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. In the last 500 years, nothing about people - not their clothes, ideas, or languages has changed as much as what they eat. The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of the coca tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today. The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the “Potato Famine(饥荒)” of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their homeland and move to America. There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the worlds largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia, a country in Africa. It was first made into a drink by Arab during the 1400s. According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a person name Kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berries on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the “wide-awake” feeling that one-third of the worlds population now starts the day with. 31.
