Unit 6 Spiral Review Objectives Apply comprehension skills and strategies to new texts Apply test-taking strategies to new texts Materials Student Book, pp. 312315 Unit 6 Show What You Know Booklet, pp. 2528 Test Strategies Right There questions have answers that can be found in one place in a passage. Look for key words from the question in the passage to find the answer. Think and Search questions have answers that are found in more than one place in a passage. Think about what information the question is asking for and search through the passage and text features to find it. Author and Me questions have answers that are not only found in the passage. You will need to think about what the author tells you and what you already know to answer Author and Me questions. Comprehension Strategies Review these comprehension strategies that children have learned: Summarize, Visualize and Analyze Story Structure. Before they read the passages, remind children they can choose from the reading strategies that they know to help them better understand the passages. Show What You Know Spiral Review Tell children that they will now have a chance to review the comprehension skills and test-taking strategies that they learned in this unit and the previous unit. They will apply these skills and strategies to new selections and then share their thinking about where and how they found the answers. Read Passage Distribute copies of the Unit 6 Show What You Know pages to children. Have them read “The Picnic Tent” on pages 312313 of the Student Book. Once children have finished reading the selection, ask them to complete the pages. You may read aloud the questions to the children. Share Your Thinking When children have answered the questions, prompt them to discuss the test-taking strategies they used to find the answers. Question 1 Problem and Solution What is Jen and James s problem? To answer this question, I had to reread the text. I read that they were playing outside but then it began to rain. This must be their problem. Because I can put my finger on the answer, this is a Right There question. (A) Question 2 Problem and Solution How did they solve the problem? To answer this question, I looked back at the story and saw that they decided to play under the picnic table. The table became a tent for them! This must be why the title of the story is the Picnic Tent. Because I had to look in a few places to find the answer, this is a Think and Search question. (B) Question 3 Context Clues What is plastic? To answer this question, I read the sentences with that word in it again. Plastic is used to describe the tablecloth, so it must be a kind of material. Because I found the answer in one place, this is a Right There question. At the park, Jen and James fl ew their kites. They played catch. But then it began to rain. “Do we have to go home?” asked James. “No,” said Jen. “I have an idea!” She took the plastic tablecloth off the table and put it under the table. It says they did mazes under the table until it stopped raining. Because I can point to the answer in the story, this is a Right There question. (B) Question 5 Retell Events in Order Short Response Question: Retell the story in your own words. To retell this story, I need to tell what happened first, next, and last. First, Jen and James packed a picnic and toys for the park. Next, they played at the park and it started to rain. Finally, they made a tent out of the table and did mazes. Because the answers are in more than one place in the story, this question is a Think and Search question. Question 1 Retell Events in Order What comes out of a butterfly egg? To find the answer to this question I looked at the beginning of the text. It says a caterpillar crawls out of the egg once it hatches. Because the answer is in one place in the text, this is a Right There question. (C) Question 2 Context Clues What does hatches mean? To answer this question, I read the sentence with that word in it again. It says a caterpillar crawls out after the egg hatches, so “hatches” must mean “to come out.” Since I found the answer in one place, this is a Right There question. (C) Question 3 Charts/Labels After it s a caterpillar, it turns into a To answer this question, I looked at the chart and read the labels. I see that the caterpillar turns into a pupa. Then the caterpillar eats and crawls and eats and grows. When it is big enough, it begins to change. Next, the caterpillar makes a hard shell around itself. It hangs upside down. Inside, the caterpillar changes. Now it is called a pupa. About ten days later, the shell cracks. At last, a butterfly comes out. At first, its wings are wet.
