3、control the class now, but thestudents and the atmosphere became strange. no, theywere notlisteningtome. itwastooquiet.thebreathless silence urged me to consider the way i wasteaching.then1 augustXX, igot thechance tostudythenewcourse of english. until then could i realized that it was my frozen eye

4、s that make the students flinch, it was my stiff face that trod out the enthusiasm in the childrens hearts. how to stimulate my class and showmy warmth,so that they can enjoytheir studyinenglish?i had a deep thought.its smile. there is a kindness called smile. it isthe most beautiful language in the

5、 world. it can makedistance no distance. just awake the students with asmiling face!i said to myself.the next day, when i stood on the stage with asmiling face, when i asked the questions with a smile,when i encouraged the children in a friendly way, thestudents were just shocked! but i could find t

On behalf ofthegraduatingmastersanddoctoralstudentsofWashingtonUniversitysSchoolofEngineeringandAppliedScience,I would liketoth

15、ankalltheparents,spouses,families,andfriendswhoencouragedandsupportedus as we worked towardsour graduatedegrees.I would especially like to thank my own family, eightmembers of which are in the audiencetoday.Iwould alsolike to thank all of the department secretaries andotherengineeringschoolstaffmemb

16、erswhoalwaysseemed tobetherewhenconfusedgraduatestudentsneeded help. And finally I would like to thank theWashingtonUniversityfacultymembers who servedas ourinstructors, mentors, and friends.As I think back on the seven-and-a-half years IspentatWashingtonUniversity,my mind isfilledwithmemories, happ

17、y, sad, frustrating, and even humorous.Tonight I would like to share with you some of thememories that I take with me as I leave WashingtonUniversity.Itakewithme thememory ofmy officeon thefourthfloorofLopataHall- theroom at theend ofthehallwaythat was too hot in summer, too cold in winter, andalway

18、stoofaraway from the womensrestroom.The windowwas my officesbestfeature.Were itnot forthephysicsbuilding across the way, it would have afforded me aclearviewof the arch.But insteadI gota viewoftheroof of the physics building. I also had a view of onecorner of the roof of Urbauer Hall, which seemed t

19、o bea favoriteperchforvariousspeciesofbirdswhoalternately won perching rights for several weeks ata time.And I had a nice viewofthephysicscourtyard,noteworthyas a good placeforwatching people run theirdogs. Its amazing how fascinating these views becamethe longerI worked on my dissertation.But my fa

20、voriteview was of a nearby oak tree. From my fourth-floorvantage point I had a rather intimate view of the treeand the various birds and squirrels that inhabit it.Occasionallya birdwould landon my window sill,whichusually had the effect of startling both of us.I take with me the memory of two young

21、professorswho passed away while I was a graduate student. AnneJohnstone, the only female professor from whom I tooka course in the engineering school, and Bob Durr, apoliticalscienceprofessorandamemberof mydissertation committee, both lost brave battles withcancer. I remember them fondly.I takewithm

22、e the memory of failingthe firstexamin one of the first engineering courses I took as anundergraduate.I remember thinkingthecourse was justtoo hard for me and that I would never be able to passit. So I went to talk to the professor, ready to dropthe class. And he told me not to give up, he told meI

23、could succeed in his class. For reasons that seemedcompletely ludicrous at the time, he said he had faithin me. And after that my grades in the class slowlyimproved, and Iended the semester withan A on thefinalexam. I remember how motivational it was to know thatsomeone believed in me.Itakewithmemem

24、oriesofthemidwesternfriendlinessthatso surprisedme when I arrivedinSt.Louis8 yearsago. Since moving to New Jersey,Iam sadto say,nobody has asked me where Iwent tohighschool.Itakewithme the memory oftheshort-livedcomputer science graduate student socialcommitteelunches. The idea was that groups of CS

25、 grad studentswere supposed to take turns cooking a monthly lunch.But after one grad student prepared a pot of chickenthatpoisonedalmosttheentireCS gradstudentpopulation and one unlucky faculty member in one fellswoop,therewasntmuch enthusiasmforhavingmorelunches.I take with me the memory of a more

26、successfulgraduatestudenteffort,theestablishmentoftheAssociation ofGraduateEngineeringStudents,known asAGES. Startedbyahandfulofengineeringgraduatestudentsbecauseweneededawaytoelectrepresentativesto a campus-wide graduatestudentgovernment, AGES soon grew into an organization thatnow sponsors a wide variety of activities and ha
