2、dering a question: what if we lived without scien _? great changes have taken pla _ in the world with the help of scien _. in the past, life was nasty, brutish and short. it is hard to i _gine how our forefathers could do without so _ny convenien _s that modern scien _ brings about. back then, only

3、a s _ll group of people enjoyed the very few forts. but the _jority of people didnt even have sufficient food, let along their privilege to be educated. anyway, it is scien _ that changes the world and _kes peoples life better and better, although it also leads to some bad aspects at the same time.

4、from the discovery of the gravity to the first step on the moon, we hu _n beings have experien _d a long pro _ss of developing scien _. and now, this pro _ss is still continuing much faster. new organi _s are already being engineered, and new geically modified crops promise benefits from higher yiel

5、ds and less use of harmful chemicals and so on. a lot of examples are showing this point. in the future, changes are likely to be even much greater as scien _ reaches out to shape life itself. _ybe one day, the possibility that life existed on _rs billions of years ago will be potentially one of the

6、 greatest discoveries of our time. it is the for _ of the petition, we hu _n beings inquiring mind and initiative that bring about the non-stopped development of scien _. therefore, it is difficult and impossible to prevent scien _ from changing the world and our life as well. at present, we are in

7、two minds about scien _. on the one hand, we are enjoying the sweet life as a result of the evelopment of scien _, and expect it to continue. and we are showing our interests into some scientific expeditions, such as the astronomy, the alien civilization, etc. on the other hand, we are distrustful o

8、f it, due to the lack of understanding of scien _. some people thus far are still very superstitious, and they would even believe in superstitions rather than believe in scien _. stephen hawking, one of the most re _rkable scientists in the world, on _ said, “in a democratic society, the public need

9、s to have a basic understanding of the scien _, so that it can _ke informed decisions and not leave them in the hands of experts.” this has reminded me of professor alan g. _cdiarmid from america, the person who got the nobel prize for chemistry in the year of xx. in his lecture at peking university

10、 this year, he put forward that scien _ is people. he also expounded the importan _ of the basic scien _ for the public. evidently, every one of us does need scien _, or we cant live without it. now that everyone needs scien _, why not take advantage of some means to give the public the right basic

11、scientific knowledge? so when they fa _ the problems such as acid rain, the greenhouse effect, nuclear weapons, enviro _ent destruction and some other problems, they can also _ke informed decisions on these subjects, just as what hawking said. one aspect relies on what is taught in schools. but scie

12、n _ is often taught in an uninteresting way and most students just learn it by rote to pass examinations. however, the final goal of learning scien _ is not to pass examinations or to get a higher score; instead, we should try to _ke full use of it to change our world and life. while learning, we sh

13、ould try to ask more questions and we should have the courage of suspecting the knowledge in the books, as some of the scientific conclusions are likely to be corrected in the future. who knows. so not only must we change our attitude towards scien _, but also the way of teaching and learning scien

14、_. in addition, scien _ is always changing at a fast rate, and who we learn at school isnt that sufficient to last a lifetime. so the _ss media including tv, radio, newspaper, _gazine and publishing pany will play an important role in reporting the latest scien _ in time. moreover, the _ss media can
