Much of our business communication takes place on the phone: in the office, at home, in the car, virtually anywhere. In this area

9、, proper phone technique can make or break deals or relationships The following are some guidelines to help you use the phone as a powerful tool. First is the greeting. When answering the phone for business, be sure to identify yourself (and your company, if applicable). 1 Thus, the other party does

10、 not think they have reached a wrong number. Use proper phone etiquette from the start. You want to be sure to be polite to the gatekeepers i. e. secretaries, receptionists etc. that answer the phone for your business contacts, as they are the ones who have the power to put you through. They may sit

11、 outside the office, but they too have influence and power so a greeting such as Good morning is important. 2 Some business relationships, especially in fields like sales, start or stall right at the front desk. When you have reached the party, if your call has been expected, remind them of the prio

12、r conversation and appointment. People get busy and can seem surprised until you remind them of where they should remember you from. 3 Calling unannounced is much like dropping in and you shouldnt overstay unless invited. If the other person does not have time, briefly state the purpose of your call

13、 and ask for an appointment to follow up at a later time. Have a phone diary. Keep a pencil and pad near the phone and jot notes during phone conversations. This will help you actively listen and have a reference for later. 4 This lets the other person know that you care about what they have to say.

14、 Recap at the end of the call, using your notes, and repeat any resolutions or commitments on either side to be sure you are both on the same page. End the call on a positive note by thanking the other person for their time and express an interest in speaking with them again (if that is true). 5 A g

19、service at a reasonable price. Many companies recognize this and have stated publicly that they will act as a good citizen. They support local arts, build parks, raise funds for charities, and try to put back some of their profits into the community that has made their success possible. A good reaso

20、n for businesses to be socially responsible is that society gives business organizations the right to exist. A social setting or environment, with its laws, customs, and other social and cultural norms, allows businesses to form and function. It is only right for businesses to participate in making

21、the community in which they operate a better place. To be socially responsible also benefits businesses. In many cases, a company will make greater profits in the long run if it considers benefits to society. Customers actually vote for products and companies when they make a purchase. If a product

22、is of good quality and priced fairly, they will probably buy it more than once. But when customers find out that a manufacturer produces only inferior or shoddy products that cheat them out of their money, they may become so angry that they will never purchase another of their products. Consumers ma

23、y also shun firms that pollute the environment or engage in unethical practices by not buying their products. When enough people believe a business no longer serves societys best interests, they may pressure the firm into its doom by boycotting its goods or services, influencing officials against it

24、, condemning it in the media, or patronizing other firms. A business whose goal is to maximize profits is not likely to act out of a sense of social responsibility although its activity will probably be legal. Only businesses that are concerned about society as well as about maintaining profitabilit

25、y are likely to invest voluntarily in socially responsible activities. For example, the former president of Pizza Hut, Orr Gunther, implemented a program called Book-it. This program rewarded children with a free pizza for reading a certain number of books. Such a business may win the trust and resp

26、ect of its customers andin the long run increase profits. To be successful, a business must determine what customers and society want or expect in terms of social responsibility.
