Gas con sumpti on was steadily upwards, overtook coal towards the end of 1992 and fin ally outstrippi ng petroleum in 1995 to become, for a period, the most popular en ergy source.This rise was coin cided with a drop in the set of coal

9、 duri ng the period 1992 to 1995. At the beg inning of 1992, coal con sumpti on stood at 65 millio n tones or so. In the first quarter of 1992, there was a brief, steady climb and, from the n un til the beg inning of the third quarter in 1995, the trend was markedly down. The fall down, first, was q
