2、Federal Government; Land and People 3.Position: The United States of America is located in the south of North America with its two youngest states Alaska in the northwestern part of North America and Hawaii in the central Pacific. It is bounded by Canada on the north and Mexico on the South with the
3、 Atlantic Ocean in the east and the Pacific Ocean in the west. National Emblem The Bald Eagle was officially dec
5、lared the National Emblem of the United States by the Second Continental Congress in 1782. It was selected by the U.S.A.s founding fathers because it is a species unique to North America. The Bald Eagle has since become the living symbol of the U.S.A.s freedom, spirit and pursuit of excellence. Its
6、image and symbolism have played a significant role in American art, folklore, music and architecture. A Brief Introduction Britains American colonies broke with the mother country in 1776 and were recognized as the new nation of the United States of America following the Treaty of Paris in 1783. During the 19th and 20th centuries, 37 new states were added to the original
8、 13 as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions. The two most traumatic experiences in the nations history were the Civil War (1861-65) and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Buoyed by victories in World Wars I and II and the end of the Co
9、ld War in 1991, the US remains the worlds most powerful nation state. The economy is marked by steady growth, low unemployment and inflation, and rapid advances in technology. Later Amerigo Vespucci confirmed that a new continent had been discovered. So the New World was named after him, “A
19、merica”. In 1497, John Cabot arrived in todays Canada and the English King claimed that the whole of the territory of North America belonged to England. Enforcing this claim, the Englishmen began to establish permanent settlements in North America by the beginning of the 17th century. History The Co

25、 10,1775; - founded a Continental Army and Navy; - appointed a committee to draft a formal declaration; uThe Treaty of Paris (1783) uThe end of the War: in 1781 The Declaration of Independence It was mainly drafted by Thomas Jefferson and was adopted by the Congress on July 4, 1776. The Declaration
26、officially proclaimed the independence of 13 North American colonies. It also declared that all men were equal and that they were entitled to have some unalienable rights such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Most importantly, it explained the philosophy of governments: the powers of g
27、overnments came from the consent of the governed and the purpose of the governments was to secure the rights mentioned above. History Appearance of American Constitution The Articles of Confederation: After the War of Independence was won, the new nation of the United States was organized under the
28、agreement of the Articles of Confederation with a weak national government called the Congress. According to it, the Congress had no power to pass laws for the different states. Even if it had passed laws, it did not have power to enforce them. The need of a new form of government was felt by an inc
29、reasing number of Americans. History The Constitutional Convention: In May 1787, a conference was held in Philadelphia to consider what should be done to strengthen the Articles of Confederation. Fifty-five delegates from all the states except Rhode Island attended the Convention to revise the Artic
30、les of Confederation and draw up a new plan of government. After struggle, the Constitution was ratified at last. This conference is called the Constitutional Convention. The abolition of slavery and the emancipation of the black enabled the country to develop more rapidly in every field. Three decades after the war, the United States led the world in industry. It also

WWI ended on November 11, 1918. immediately after the WWI, the United States entered a period of industrial boom which was mainl
35、y based on the progress of science and technology. The False Prosperity in the 1920s The Great Depression of 1929-1933 Roosevelts “New Deal” History W.W.II broke out in September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland and England, together with France, declared war on Germany. On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japan made a swift and sudden raid on the United States naval base at Pear Harbor. The next day Congress declared war on Japan. On May 8, 1945, Germany surrendered. On August 14, 1945, Japan surrendered unconditionally and the Se
