、will never be anyone else like you in the future of the universe. Thats why being yourself is more important than anything else. Thats how life works: two steps forward, followed by one-and-a-half back as those who lost their power try to reverse the process.

Those who benefit most from the status quo are naturally the least interested in change, and they find allies in the fearful and the authoritarian. Conformity always includes a threat of punishment if you fail to fit in, whether it comes from ridicule, being shunned by ot

、hers, or direct attack. Theres a more fundamental power behind the urgency with which authoritarian conservatives seek to suppress individuality. That power is lack of trust. Wise leaders and outstanding thinke

、rs are alike in two things: theyre usually non-conformists and they display a deep trust in the basic goodness, intelligence, and capacity for development of their fellow human beings. In stark contrast, the most d

、etermined proponents of conformity have always been dictatorships. Under a dictatorship, any kind of variation from prescribed ways of thinking or acting is punished. Conservative thinkers often suggest too much freedom will lead to anarchy and the collapse of all standards.

Being who and what you are is the most natural thing there is. There may be a cost. Some people, even some friends, will disapprove of you as you truly are and will let you know it. There will be setbacks along the way. Yet the price for being

、yourself can never be as great as the price you will pay for stepping aside from your basic nature: a price paid in frustration, dissatisfaction, and the hopeless realization of all that you might have been, but now can never attain.

Take up the challenge. Conformity has very little to recommend it. Trust yourself and trust others. Mediocrity and inner frustration are the true price of conforming. Only those with the courage openly to live their dreams can ever hope to find lasting

、 satisfaction with their lives. Dont be too concerned about money, because all it will do is distract you from achieving happiness. And the irony of ironies is that people think they will be happy when they

、 have money. Money has nothing to do with happiness. If you are happy and you have money, you can use it for happiness. If you are unhappy and you have money, you will use that money for more unhappiness. Bec

、ause money is simply a neutral force. Dont misinterpret me: I am not against money. I am not against anything. Money is a means. Your money will enhance your pattern, whatsoever it is.

、。But people keep looking for money as if money is going to bring happiness. People are ready, at any moment, to change their pattern, to change their ways, if more money is available somewhere else. Once the money is

、 there, then suddenly you are no longer yourself; you are ready to change. This is the way of the worldly man. Remember, I dont call a person worldly because he or she has money. I call them worldly if they change their motives for money. This applies to people

、with no money as well - they may simply be poor. Just being poor is not equivalent to being spiritual; and just being rich is not equivalent to being a materialist. The materialistic pattern of life is one in which money predominates over everything.

The non-materialistic life is one in which money is just a means: happiness predominates, joy predominates, your own individuality predominates. You know who you are and where you are going, and you are not distracted

Then suddenly you will see your life has a meditative quality to it. Everybody wants success. Some people aim for it; others just talk about it. We all know what it looks like when someone e

、lse has it. Often times it just seems like something too far out of reach. The truth to success is closer than you think. Its just on the other side you have to want it enough, and be willing enough to get it.

Fear is your biggest obstacle fear of failure, fear of the judgment of others; fear of actually succeeding. It will trip you up every time. It will cause you to make decisions that may seem “right” at the time, but theyre preventing you from actually getting over that wall.

Success has no excuses. You either get it or you dont. The minute you find a reason not to take another step towards success is the moment you stop being successful. In the symphony of success, excuses are just noise.

On the other side of obstacles成功在障碍的另一边Everyone faces changes; different ones at different times. We all handle the same challenges differently; we all have different results. Its how you handle each one and what you do with the results that c

、ount. An obstacle is something you either find a way around or allow to stop you. Remember, youve got to get passed obstacles in order to succeed. On the other side of

Not everything works; even if it works for other people, the same thing just doesnt work for us. So what? Failure can either become an obstacle and an excuse or it can become your teacher in what not to do.

It takes effort, commitment and follow-through成功需要付出,需要承诺,需要坚持到底地不停尝试They call it a ladder of success for a reason because you need to climb it in order to get somewhere. Its not an escalator. You just dont stand there and let it do the work for you. You have to do the work yourself. Some

、times it will be easy; other times youll be carrying a heavy load on your shoulders. The ladder remains the same. Success still waits on the other side. Its going to take determination and persistence on your part to get up and over that wall.

Which side do you want to be on? I was in the Santa Cruz Mountains not long ago, speaking and singing at a womens conference. We were focusing on the theme of loving others in practical ways t

、hrough our gifts, and something in particular happened during one of the sessions that will remain imprinted in my memory as a beautiful illustration of this practice. A young Syrian woman (Lilith) had been invited

、to the conference at the last minute, and everyone seemed surprised and delighted that shed actually come. Just a few days earlier, Lilith had fled her country and found refuge with one of the women attending the conference. As an Orthodox Christian in Syria, she and her loved ones had become target

、s of violent atrocities from radical terrorist groups in the countrys ongoing civil war. Lilith had witnessed horrors no one her young age should ever see. Despite the f

、urther danger it presented, shed decided to leave her home and her family to find safety here in America. Knowing some of her story, and seeing her sitting through the sessions at the retreat - head covered in a scarf, face bowed toward the floor - broke my heart.

Liliths story touched all of us, including Pam, an attendee who was a quilt maker. Pam had just finished a gorgeous, intricately-patterned quilt, and had brought it with her. She, along with a few of the leaders, decided to give it to Lili

、th as a symbol of their comfort and love. Lilith had left her own mother behind in her homeland, and I cant imagine how frightened and alone she felt. But in her absence I could see there were lots of mamas in this community of women who were more than ready to love on her.

During our last session together Lilith was called forward and prayed over, hugged, and wrapped up in that beautiful quilt. I thought of the many hours Pam undoubtedly spent work

、ing on it, unaware of the horrendous events that would lead Lilith to this moment-literally surrounded by the beauty and love the quilt embodied. I wept. When they told her it was for her, she wept. We all wept, honking our noses and wiping our eyes.

I thought about the words from 1 Peter 4:10: Serve one another with the particular gifts God has given each of you, as faithful dispensers of the magnificently varied grace of God. The words particular

、and varied suggest to me that there may be as many gifts as there are people and personalities. A quilt wrapped around a ravaged young woman is just one practical, loving act of service that demonstrates Gods grace.

Its the particular things we do that we sometimes think are too small or inconsequential compared to the overwhelming suffering we witness. But to do nothing when we see an opportunity-to serve, to comfort, to ease anothers pain-is to withhold whatever facet of Gods magnificen

、tly varied grace our gift offers. Theres no rose without a thorn. This t

、hought is absolutely necessary to prepare you to experience less pain and more joy in your journey of life. With a birds-eye view, you may realize something meaningful. During your school years, while joyfully acquiring knowledge you are also u

、nder the pressure of homework, examinations, and ranking. You face crises and agony. Meanwhile, all sorts of intricate affairs may happen between you and your classmates. In your youth, puberty may fill you with unrealized desires and send you into deeper perplexity.

Entering marriage, you are actually in the center of all the contradictionsthe matching of different personalities, enduring of family members, childrens schooling, financial management and so on, you may also fall into marriage crisis. As you ag

、e, your health may deteriorate and various troubles in your career and family may gradually emerge. Mid-life and old-age crisis will follow, leading you to your eternity. We may therefore conclu

、de that much of our life may not be spent in contentment. However, the things that discontent are, in fact, not useless since you may learn more from them than from the things that cheered you up. An elderly carpenter w

、as ready to retire. He told his employer (contractor) of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could get by.

The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and usedinferior ma

、terials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career. When the carpenter finished his work and the builder came to inspect the house, the contractor handed the front-door key to the carpenter.

、 This is your house, he said, my gift to you. What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.

So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing to put up less than the best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created

、 and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized, we would have done it differently./en这个故事也映射了我们的生活状况。 Think of yourself as th

、e carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deserves to be lived graciously and withdignity. The plaque on the wall says, Life is a do-it-yo

、urself project. Who could say it more clearly? Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes

、and the choices you make today. Im sorry. I have no idea why your week is bad, or how bad it actually is. I dont know if youve told anyone, if theres anything that could fix it or if its made you

、 rather unpleasant to be around. But I do know that Im sorry that youre hurting, or stressed, or exhausted, or grieving, or frustrated, or depressed, or lonely, or scared or lost.

I thought about writing this letter in a couple of different ways. I thought about writing it about the things you could do to feel better: show yourself compassion, go outside and look at the trees, look at a baby photo of yourself. Or I thought about focusing the letter on

、 how the bad weeks can actually be pretty beautiful, if you look at them the right way. I almost wrote those letters, and maybe at some point I will, but I think I ended up deciding that I wasnt writing to make anyone feel better - I just want you to feel heard.
