Verbal communication is also known as oral communication and is any communication that uses words; nonverbal communication, however, is messages sent without using words. For example, saying I love you, is a
3、verbal communication, the nonverbal form of which can be a kiss on the cheek.Chapter 1: : Relationships between verbal and nonverbal communicationHuman communication is extremely complex. Language is imprecise, and it can be difficult to convey meaning through words alone. Thus, apart from using ver
4、bal communication, we still need to utilize nonverbal communication. Verbal communication is any communication executed with spoken words while nonverbal communication is gestures, facial expressions and other forms of sending a message without words. Verbal and nonverbal communications both are ins
5、truments for our human beings to express our feelings and communicate with each other.They are both very important to us. It is certain that they two have a strong relationship with each other. Presumably speaking, verbal and nonverbal communication are intended to complement one another. That is to
6、 say, when in our daily lives, we exchange information with other people, we will find that it is insufficient to use only verbal language or nonverbal language to express our meaning fully. On the contrary, sometimes when they dont complement one another, they can create confusion, mistrust and dis
7、appointment. For example, if you tell your spouse you want to spend more time with him but then dont ever make time to do so, there will be confusion and frustration. In other words, what is said should be complemented by what is done.Chapter 2: : differences between verbal and nonverbal communicati
8、onIn our daily lives, we use an elaborate symbol system of words to represent our experiences, ideas, and feelings. We also use nonverbal symbols to do much the same thing. Although both systems parallel each other in certain ways, they are also different. One important difference between verbal and
9、 nonverbal communication is found in the biological distinctions at the core of each system. That is, biological forces govern many of our nonverbal actions. For instance, there is a young man who wants to show his mate that he is not alarmed by the rattlesnake on the road, he might shave a difficul
10、t time camouflaging his fear. As his voice goes up an octave and his knees knock, we can see biology winning out over personal desire. We have much more control over verbal communication than over nonverbal action. A second difference deals with the stage in life at which we learn these two kind of
11、communication instruments. We learn nonverbal communication much earlier in life. Soon after birth, an infant is able to make some sense of the physical contact it receives, which is a process of learning nonverbal communication. However, to learn verbal communication, a child needs not only advance
12、d muscle development, but also a higher degree of socialization. Last but not least, nonverbal messages can be more emotional in their appeal and impact than verbal ones. Your tears, even when perceived by someone from another culture, have a much stronger impact than the words I am miss you.Chapter
13、 3: ee: similarities between verbal and nonverbal communicationVerbal communication and nonverbal communication as two different types of communicating instruments, they certainly have much in common. First and foremost, they both use a culturally agreed upon set of symbols. The words we use or the
14、marks we put down on paper are intended to stand for something. If someone says, ”I have an old black dog named Sam”, that person is using symbols to refer to a dog he or she owns. It works the same way in nonverbal communications. For instance, if a young man kisses a lady he is in love with, the k
15、iss is a way of representing his internal state affection. The second similarity between verbal and nonverbal communication is that they are both products of individuals. Whether we speak, laugh, point, touch, or remain silent, we are still generating a message that someone else uses to infer someth
16、ing about us. It is our message, and in that sense it is subjective and personal. As for the third similarity, it might be a corollary of the former two, but it is significant enough to justify some additional discussion. Whether we use verbal communication or nonverbal communication, someone is att
17、aching meaning to the symbols we produce. For example, in our daily lives, we may use words to make people follow certain directions, say, when we say, “turn left, ” and the person you talk to will move left. It is the same when we point to the left and the person we are chatting with will turn to t
18、hat direction. The last similarity is that both verbal communication and nonverbal communication are unique characteristics owned by human beings. It is a distinctive feature that distinguish human beings from animals.Chapter 4: r: functions of verbal and nonverbal communicationAs two different type
19、s of instruments of communicating, they surely play an important role in our daily lives. On the one hand, they both have their separate functions. Firstly, as for the function of verbal communication, it provides information and direction. When you verballycommunicate, you are providing direction,
20、clarity or delivering information. Verbal communication can affirm, correct or abuse based on the words used. Secondly, as to the function of nonverbal communication, it is used to clarify and make verbal communication more understandable. This is seen with the use of hand or facial gestures,images
21、and other objects to illustrate the message being communicated. Nonverbal communication offers cues that help the other person understand the message.For example, when you order a drink at a coffee shop, you know the cashier is ready to take your money when he puts out his hand. On the other hand, t
22、hey have some common functions. Firstly, both verbal and nonverbal communication reflect an individuals beliefs, worldview and self-perception. The words used and the delivery of the message can expose the inner working of the individual. For example, if you attempt to hug someone and she pulls away
23、, she may have an aversion to physical touch because of past experiences. Secondly, verbal and nonverbal communication affirm the message.For example, if you are trying to teach someone how to fix a car, you will verbally instruct your student and you will nonverbally demonstrate the instructions.
