13、into high school, shepursues him; they're like the runners in Keats'“ Ode on a Grecia nUrn ” who pursue each other for eternity without ever drawing closer.In Rei ner's film, they flip and start running in the other directi on.Madeline Carroll plays Juli Baker, who was determined to get

14、BryceLoski (Callan McAuliffe) to like her when they were kids, but in eighth grade has tur ned her atte nti on to more urge nt matters, like spari ng the life of the beautiful sycamore tree in her front yard. ( 英文影评)It is threate ned with being chopped dow n by the forces of evil, and she climbs it

15、and won't come down. That shows some character, muses Bryce's gra ndfather Chet (Joh n Mahon ey). If he were Bryce, he'd notice a girl like that. Bryce begins to catch on. There are difficulties and the possibility of heartbreak. There always are in high school. You wear your sleeve on y

16、our heart. There are pare nts. Not everybody has pare nts like Juno did. If Juno had ordinary parents, her story would be a grim morality play. But Flipped does n't haul in sta ndard pare nts of tee nagers. Reiner wisely casts gifted actors (Aida n Qui nn and Pen elope Ann Miller as the Bakers,

17、and Anthony Edwards and Rebecca De Mornay as the Loskis). He knows that Maho ney can save a wise gran dfather from cornball with sheer brute force of niceness.There's a scree nplay device by Reiner and An drew Sche inman, based on the no vel by Wen deli n Van Draa nan, that could be arduous but

18、works here because it has bee n thought through. The key eve nts in the film are seen from both points of view: Bryce's and Juli's.Teen agers often lose the beat emoti on ally, and these two n eed Joh n Philip Sousa. There isn't trickery: The sce nes happe n as they seem to, and n ot in

19、alternate uni verses. But they seem so differe nt, depe nding on who is see ing them.There's one of those events so beloved by teenage girls in which they can exact excruciati ng embarrassme nt on boys while seem ing to be blithely un aware. The boys are aucti oned off to the girls as lunch room

20、 part ners to raise money for charity. Yeah, that's what a guy wan ts, to sta nd on stage while the most patr onizing teacher in the school han dles the bidd ing. Of course, it all goes tragically wrong for Juli and Bryce, but for what seems like differe nt reas ons.Reiner sets most of the movie in 1963 (his classic Stand by Me, is set a few years earlier, in 1959), and I don't t
