And until recently thishostile attitude towards daydreaming was the most com mon one. Daydream ing was viewed as a waste of time. Or itwas con sidered and
3、 un healthy escape from real life and its duties. But now some people are taking a fresh look atdaydream ing. Some think it may be a very healthy thi ng to do.Attitudes towards daydreaming are changing in much the same way that attitudes towards night dreaming havechanged. Once it was thought that n
4、ighttime dreams interfered with our needed rest. But then researchers triedinterruptingthe dreams ofsleepers. They learned that sleepers who arent allowed to dream lost the ben efits of rest. They become tense and anxious. They become irritable. They have trouble concen trati ng. Their mental health
5、 is temporarily damaged. To feelwell again, they must be allowed to dream.Now researchers are finding that daydreaming may also be important to mental health. Daydream ing, they tell us,is a good means of relaxati on. But its ben efits go bey ond this. A nu mber of psychologists have con ducted expe
6、riments and have reached some surpris ing con clusi ons.Dr. Joa n T. Freyberg has con cluded that daydream ingcon tributes to in tellectualgrowth. It also improves concentration, attention span, and the ability to get along with others, she says. In an experiment with school childre n, this same res
7、earcher found that daydreaming led the children to pay more attention to detail.They had more happy feelings. They worked together better. Another researcher reported that daydreaming seemed toproduce improved self-c on trol and creative abilities.But thats only part of the story. The most remarkabl
8、e thi ng about daydream ing may be its usefu In ess in shaping our future lives as we want them to be. In dustrialist Henry J. Kaiser believed that much of his success was due tothe positive use of daydream ing. He maintained that you can imagine your future. Florence Nightingale dreamed ofbeco ming
9、 a nu rse. The young Thomas Edis on pictured himself as an inven tor. For these no table achievers, itappears that their daydreams came true.Dr. Harry Emers on Fosdick believed that the way we picture ourselves is ofte n the way we turn out. He offeredthis advice: Hold a picture of yourselfi n your
10、mi nds eye,and you will be drawn toward it. Picture yourself vividly as defeated, and that will make victory impossible. Pictureyourself as winning, and that will con tribute immeasurably to success. Do not picture yourself as anything, and you willdrift.The experiences of some athletes seem to conf

In eithercase it reacts automatically to information that you give itIt reacts appropriately to what you think or imagineto betrue.He believes that purposeful daydream ing buil

And self-image has an importa nt effect on a pers ons acti on and accomplishme nts.Can you use purposeful daydream ing to shape your own future? Why n ot try? 15、mmend going about it. Choose a time whe n you can be alone and un disturbed. Close youreyes, to permit your imagi nati on to soar more freely. Many people find that they get best results by prete nding thatthey are sitting before a large screen. They project the desired image of themselves onto that
16、 scree n.Now picture yourself-as vividly as possible-the way you want to be.Remember to picture your desired goals as if you had already attained them. Go over all the details of this picture. Seethem clearly and sharply. Impress them strongly on your memory. The result ing memory traces will suppos
17、edly startaffect ing your everyday life.They will help lead you to the atta inment to your goals.Of course daydream ing is no substitute for hard work. If its athletic achieveme nt you want, you also have to getlots of practice in your sport. You have to work hard to develop skills. If its school su

20、minute vacation into the realm of imagination each day, youmay add much to the exciteme nt and enjoyme nt of your life.
