5、m: ParticiplesSomething about P artic iplesA participle is a verbal that is used as an adjective. It does the work of both a verb and an adjective. The term verbal in dicates that a p artici pl e, like the other two kinds of verbals (ger und and infinitive), is based on a verb and therefore expresse

6、s action or a state of being. However, since they fun cti on as adjectives, p artic iples modify nouns or pronouns. There are two types ofparticipies: present participiesand p ast p artici pl es. Prese nt p artic ip les end in -ing. sometimesdoubli ng the final consonant:“ think ” becomes“ thinking

7、”"fall ” becomes“ falli ng ”a? Ia.run becomes runningPast p artici pies end in -ed, -e n, -d, -t, or -n, as in the words asked, eate n, saved, dealt, and see n.A participial phrase is a group of words consisting of a participie and the modifier(s) and/or (pro)noun(s) or noun p hrase(s) that fun

A p artici pie is a verbal ending in -ing (p rese nt) or -ed, -e n, -d, -t, or -n (p ast) that functions as an adjective, modify ing a noun or pronoun.2. A p artici pia

13、l p hrase con sists of a p artici pie plus modifier(s), object(s), an d/or compi eme nt(s).3. Partici pies and p artic ip iai p hrases must be p laced as close to the nouns or pronouns they modify as po ssibie, and those nouns or pronouns must be clearly stated.4. A p artici pial p hrase is set off

14、with commas whe n it: a) comes at the begi nning of a sentence, b) in terr upts a sentence as a non esse ntial eleme nt, or c) comes at the end of a sentence and is sep arated from the word it modifies.the -ing form as the Attributivered ” is an attributiWhat is attributive ?
