In the 50 years since ur first visit, urcuntries have lived thrugh many prfund changes. I am very glad t recrd that ne f t

2、heirreversible changes fr the better in my lifetime has been in the relatinship between theUnited Kingdm and Germany.Mr President, it falls t a Head f State t lead a natin in the marking f anniversaries. Everymnth this year we cmmemrate either the centenary f a mmentus event in the FirstWrld War; th

3、e 70th anniversary f a milestne at the end f the Secnd Wrld War; r, herein Germany, 25 years f reunificatin fllwing the fall f the wall which divided this city andthis natin fr s lng.But, tnight, I wuld als like t cast back rather further in time. Last week in a water-meadw by the River Thames, I at

4、tended an event t celebrate the 800th anniversary f theMagna Carta. f curse, in cmmn with ther events in ur remte histry, the precise factsf 1215 are disputed. The cnsequences f the agreement between King Jhn and his barns,hwever, are nt disputed: fr the first time we established in England that n m

5、an shuld beabve the law and that individuals as well as rulers have rights. Thus began the lng, slw andinterrupted prcess f ur cuntrys evlutin int a rrw I shall visit St Pauls Church, where the first freely-elected legislature in Germanymet in 1848. The Frankfurt Parliament turned ut t be a false da

6、wn; it tk anther centuryand the lss f the mst terrible wars in histry t set Germany n the path f demcracy.Earlier this year my cusins visited Germany t mark with yu, Mrre recent andpainful anniversaries. The Duke f Kent visited Dresden and The Duke f Glucester visitedBergen-Belsen. I myself shall vi

7、sit Bergen-Belsen n Friday. These visits underline the cmpleterecnciliatin between ur cuntries.Germany has recnciled with all her neighburs. I pay tribute t the wrk f the Germanstatesmen since the Secnd Wrld War wh reinvented Germany and helped t rebuild Eurpe.I met Chancellr Adenauer at Windsr in 1

8、958. He rejected the idea f a neutral Germany,preferring t anchr Germany in the West. His successrs tk up the challenge f unitingGermany as a member f all the institutins f Eurpe and the West.Since 1945 the United Kingdm has determined t number amng Germanys very strngestfriends in Eurpe. In the int

9、ervening decades, Britain and Germany have achieved s much bywrking tgether. I have every cnfidence that we will cntinue t d s in the years ahead.Since Berlin and Germany were reunited there has been much t celebrate. Tday I cruisedwith yu, Mr President, alng the Spree. I saw fewer cranes than when

10、I was last here in 2019年.But still the mst magnificent element f Berlins skyline is the Reichstag dme, an enduringreminder f ur cultural cperatin. ur wrk tgether includes every part f life, frmplitics t cmmerce, frm industry t every aspect f the arts, in particular, music,museums and educatin.We als

11、 saw a wnderful eample f partnership in educatin and science during ur visit t theTechnical University this afternn. The enthusiasm and interest ur students and yungpeple have fr each thers ideas and wrk is ur greatest asset: the net generatin is at easewith itself and with cntempraries acrss Eurpe

12、in a way that was never the case befre.The United Kingdm has always been clsely invlved in its cntinent. Even when ur mainfcus was elsewhere in the wrld, ur peple played a key part in Eurpe. In the nineteenthcentury in the Russian Empire a Welsh engineer called Jhn Hughes funded a mining twnwhich is

We havewitnessed hw quickly things can change fr the better. But we knw that we must wrk hardt maintain the benefits f the pst-war wrld. We knw that divisin in Eurpe is
