1、Discuss the Effects of Globalization on University EducationAccording to Held (1999), as cited by RuiYang(2003), globalization has already become a popular word in the late 1900s. There have been a considerable number of different views which have created a huge academic and popular literature on gl

2、obalization and related topics. According to data collected by Busch (1997), the amount of articles with “globalization/global” in the title have increased almost three times in the past ten years. In order to survive and occupy a significant position in academic field, higher education has begun to

3、 integrate into the global community to fulfill the global requirement and even adjust to the international practice. Some people assert that globalization brings a lot of benefits to university education and it will improve the educational quality of the whole world. However, although globalization

4、 brings opportunities to university education, argue that it has negative effects on higher the future development of higher education. This article would discuss both views on the effects of globalization on university education. Globalization has critical influence on university institutions and t

5、heir educational strategies. In order to keep correspondence with rapid developed globalization, university education even becomes an industry which aims to boost economy. According to Postiglione and Jiang(1999), as summarized by RuiYang(2003), in September 1999, the number of matriculates in Chine

6、se universities increased almost 50%, from 1.08in 1998 to 1.53 million students in 1999. This expansion aimed to promote the economy, since the Chinese government believed that parents in China were willing to spend a considerable amount of money on their childs higher education (Postiglione and Jia

7、ng 1999). As the result of the ascendancy of economics over educational strategies, globalization is both an opportunity and a dangerous signal to higher education. Many people argue that globalization is not a new phenomenon. As cited by RuiYang(2003), it is a remarkable change in various field suc

8、h as labor, production, consumption, information, and technology, which might collectively be crucial to the society (Miyoshi 1998: 248), and require are thinking of social theory and politics in the current situation as a response to new developments in the community and culture (Kellner 1998: 39).

9、 This means globalization is a developing process of the society. It also brings chances and positive change to the whole world community.One of the benefits that globalization bring to university education is academic resources sharing. Take T as an example, Ted is one of the largest online opening

10、 course resources which are widely adapted by a considerable number of universities. It is a website that universities all around the world share their professional courses online so that students and teachers from other counties can also have access to courses given by professors in certain field s

11、uch as philosophy, psychology and math. Besides, globalization facilitates universities from all around the world to cooperate with each other. There are so many problems and issues remained to be settled by world citizens. The cooperation of higher education institutes integrates human beings intel

12、ligent and wisdom to dispose puzzles and put forward novel thoughts. This will largely contribute the society and help the world civilization move forward.Moreover, with the development of globalization, global education also came into being. According to Altbach(2004), the appearance of a global ed

13、ucation market show itself in the form of a variety of multinational universities. Higher institutes try to set up branch campuses in foreign countries. They link programs or academic researches with other universities. Globalization provides students with more opportunities to choose their favorite

14、 university. For those students who come from developing countries, they could have access to higher and professional education from developed countries under the circumstance of globalization. Some universities and institutes even offer special scholarship for international students.However, with r

15、egard to university education, which aims to cultivate talents for society, people believe that the negative effects of globalization exceed positive ones. To satisfy the globalization requirement, university education is likely to lose its original academic meaning. One of the specialized character

16、s of globalization is economic booming. According to Currie (1998),as summarized by RuiYang(2003), to survive and succeed in a rapidly developing world, university leaders believe that they must posse the market and transfer themselves to customer-oriented companies (Currie 1998: 15). Some universit

17、ies have to set students-oriented educational policy so that they could recruit more students. The most direct reflection is that universities take economic standards as benchmark of higher education. According to Miyoshi (1998: 264), as cited by RuiYang(2003),when Robert C. Dynes, vice-chancellor f

18、or Academic Affairs, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), was designated to assume chancellorship in April 1996, he put forward seven goals for UCSD on the situation. All of these, two of them were concerned with the students, one with the university staff, one with the campus community,

19、one with the regional community, and two with partnerships between the university and business locally, nationally, and internationally (University of California, San Diego 11 April 1996). He emphasizes the social interactions between research institutions and the business organizations. Only when u

20、niversities have the chance to cooperate with the economic trend and follow the society requirement, can they compete with other competitors. As a result, universities fail to pursue academic outcomes and less likely to make a contribution to the community.Moreover, globalization makes university ed

21、ucation largely rely on modern technology to delivery knowledge. In the classroom, electronic equipment such as computer, projector are the most necessary facility in the teaching process. Without this kind of device, teachers are not likely to give a normal lecture. According to Birkerts(1994), , a

22、s cited by Rui Yang(2003), many people decry the cognitive effects of learning from screen-information or long-distance knowledge. (Birkerts 1994: 27). High-tech teaching equipment has become the indispensable part of university education. Students and teachers are encouraged to working on their pro

23、ject though computers and electronic devices. It seems that globalization provide the university staff and students with occasion to operate modern technology. Consequently, universities lost traditional sense as academic center and turned to high-technology equipment land.Globalization is an inevit

24、able process of social development. It has great influence on culture, economy, policy, trade and education. It is undisputed that globalization enhances the world community and integrates worldwide diversity. Universities all around the world are greatly encouraged by globalization and move toward modern and international direction. However,
