What are your plans and goals after you receive your degree?“You will be a scientist!” That was the comment of all people around me when I was a k
3、id. At that moment, I believed it because I showed extraordinary quantitative talent at study. That belief led to my decision to start undergraduate study of chemistry at Fudan University. However, as it turned out, I made a choice without considering my whole personality. The requirement of tremend
4、ous patience and carefulness for a chemist simply didnt fit a dynamic young man like me. After some mental regrouping and self-evaluation, I decided to leave behind the world of science in favor of some field I enjoy much more: marketing.As a result, I chose a career path totally different from thos
5、e of my classmates, most of whom became chemists. Although it was difficult for a chemical graduate to step into marketing, I eagerly sought employment opportunities and managed to join BASF China as a salesperson, an entry position for a marketing career. In the three years with BASF China, I recei
6、ved tow promotions in reward for my outstanding performance. My pace of promotion was faster than those of my peers, so I am now the youngest of my level in BASF China.However, I am not satisfied with my current status. Although I have learned a great deal about sales, business development, product
7、management and developed my leadership and analytical skills in the past three years, I know I am still far from an outstanding manager. If my interest from science to business was the first significant change in my life, the graduate business study should be indispensable to realize my second signi
8、ficant change, from a potential leader to a successful one. This is why I want to attend business school now and why I apply for Chicago GSB.At GSB, I will benefit first from its strength in finance. Today I feel that m financial knowledge isnt enough for me to deal with more and more corporate stra
9、tegic issues connected closely with finance. So I chose GSB for its first-rank finance program.Another reason why I desire a GSB degree is its great flexibility in curriculum. Except for the required LEAD, I will be able to select any electives from a long list and design my own concentrations. Such
10、 flexibility is a perfect fit for me because it will satisfy my multiple interests in finance, marketing and strategic management.I am also attracted by GSBs worldwide recognition and its strong alumni network. It will be a great honor for me to link my name with Chicago GSB. In GSBs huge alumni net
11、work, there are and will be more and more Chinese due to GSBs increasing focus on China. That will be an extra benefit for me, a Chinese student who wishes to develop in his home country.To study at GSB fits my personal goal as well. Before enrollment I will marry Aroma, my university sweetheart, an

18、 had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.” If I were a character in a book, I would like to be the old Cuban fisherman, Santiago in one of Hemingways most enduring works, the Old Man and the Sea. Although he is down on his luck, it would be exciting for me to experience his extraordinary
19、 adventure.On the eighty-fifth day Santiago rows his skiff far out into the Gulf Stream. There he hooks the biggest marlin ever seen in those waters. He fights with it for two days and finally harpoons it. On his way back, he is forced into another losing battle with marauding sharks. They leave him
20、 nothing but the skeleton of his catch.But I dont choose to be Santiago only for his thrilling experience. More importantly, I choose him for his courage, perseverance and unconquerable spirit. Although he has spent eihty-four luckless days fishing and got nothing, he sets out again with the pride o
21、 his calling. In the more than three days battle, he is actually fighting, not only with the marlin and sharks, but also with himself, an old fisherman who is alone and no longer strong. When he realizes he cannot stop the sharks, he shows great courage in face of defeat and the ability to win perso
22、nal triumph from loss.I aspire to have all his courage and perseverance to fight with any difficulties in my life and win every battle. However, just as in Hemingways world, there are circumstances where one cannot win with ones limited resources in the real world. So the ability to snatch spiritual
23、 victory from material defeat will be crucial for me to get out of frustration and move forward in both my professional and personal life.Tonys Self-EvaluationRegarding my application, I think I am good in the academic aspect. My GMAT, TOEFL and GPA figures are all above average. I also did well in
24、other things like recommendations and interviews. But I have to admit that Im not strong in essays. Although I have developed a clear self-positioning strategy, I was not able to present myself well in my essays. I believe my writing skills have limited the presentation of my qualities to the admiss
25、ions.I received a bachelor degree in science so usually Im strong in logic. My essays are quite logical, reasonable but lack passion and are too generic. If had the chance to rewrite my essays, I would also try to be more specific, personal and passionate. If you are preparing for your future applic
26、ation, it will never be wrong for you to spend time improving your writing.One thing I did particularly well in my application is time management. I feel quite proud that I could manage to meet the deadline of the schools and manage my applications in good order. If you want to apply to more than 5

29、ichigan Business School help you attain your goals?China, as one of the most competitve manufacturing resources and biggest potential market, has attracted industrial giants to invest billions of US dollars to set-up their operations in China. All these projects provided tremendous opportunities to
30、people like myself, who started a career with these companies in China and want to progress up the corporate ladder in the long run career development. My post-graduation career plan is to become a higher level executive in a manufacturing company. “Better, Faster Cheaper” is my belief in a business
31、 “Olympic”. The trend of a closer link between manufacturing and sales, the market change from technical drive to customer drive, the Internet and e-commerce, all of these are re-defining the qualification for a successful business leader. My experience as an engineering manager, a divisional operat
32、ion planner and an industrial engineer had provided me a solid foundation in manufacturing and engineering. However, I realized my lack of exposure to other aspects of business, such as marketing, finance, human resource and information systems, might prove a drawback for my long run career developm
33、ent. Thus a full-time MBA program will be an appropriate vehicle to achieve the knowledge I want. At the same time, I an looking to entering the TMI program as well.I graduated from Tianjin University in 1991 with a BE degree, majoring in Industrial Management Engineering. My first position was an a
34、ssociate industrial engineer in a mini-bus factory. During the first year I had been sent to the production floor to be a chassis assembler. Even though being paced by the conveyor was no fun, I did learn many things that I could not get from my professors. Such experience drew em closer to floor op
35、erators and made me easier to deal with during my later assignments in time study and line balance. When Motorola invested in China in 1993, I became part of the pioneer team to set up the first paging factory in Tianjin. Motorola gave me a wonderful opportunity to learn the latest manufacturing tec
36、hnology and, in reality, to practice. In those two years, I would work 60 hours a week to complete many exciting assignments, from new factory layout to headcount plan, from product transference to engineering documentation setup, from capacity planning to productivity improvement. In 1995, I was pr
37、omoted to headquarters in Beijing as the division operation planner. My new responsibility included new JV planning and the productivity benchmarking program. From these new assignments, I started to get a “glimpse” of the business world.In 1996 I joined the General Motors team when Delphi EPS proje
38、ct started in Shanghai. As an industrial engineer, I received more professional training, such as Systematic Layout Planning (SLP), Lean Manufacturing and Workcell Design. As a member of such a complicated project team, I participated in the establishment of another world-class factory, built from a
39、 blueprint into a magnificent reality within 18-month time. After that, I had been assigned to conduct factory planning workshops for other Delphi venturse, both in China and Spain. These experiences had improved my project leading skill and made me capable of becoming the Engineering Manager of the
40、 Haworth Furniture (shanghai) in 1998. I was the project leader, responsible to set up a 100,000 sq.ft metal furniture plant. I learned how to negotiate construction contracts and how to run production with the MRP system. The new factory shipped out its first container in July 1999 and obtained ISO
41、 9001 certification in the same year. My current responsibilities include facility, maintenance, vertical product integration, special products and localization support.After studying the different courses available, UM B-School became my N0.1 choice because of her outstanding academic reputation an
42、d stellar faculty. Also, I am very much interested in the TMI manufacturing leadership program. I learned a lot from the TMI web site. I believe the program and myself are mutually matched. I strongly believe people always learn something better by actually doing it. Thus participation in the TMI re
43、al world projects will give me a wonderful opportunity to practice what I will learn from the MBA course. Working closely with people from different backgrounds in a project team environment will fulfillanother expectation of my study, improving my team work skill. I had worked as a professional in
44、the manufacturing field for 10 years. The analytical thinking and problem-solving skills learned from that previous work can be shared with my project team. My hands-on experience, particularly in the field of factory layout planning, material handling, process improvement and project maagement can

Overall speaking, UMs close link with industries, top-notch international business study and quantitative management skill development all made me enthusiastic to pursue an MA from UM. 46、as a dual degree focused on manufacturing, greatly added to my confidence about mychoice.Describe an idea you have had for a new business or product or a new service line of an existing entity.Traditional supermarkets are bearing a high operation cost and facing the incursion from online shopping in
47、 the 1990s. They spend a large amount of money on coupon leaflets and rack set-ups for promotion each week trying to attract more customers. However, all these efforts may still have drawbacks when the customer cannot find out where those goods are placed in such maize-like markets, or when housewiv
48、es can not find their coupons, or simply find that the coupons have already expired at the cashier a better way to communicate sales information? What is a more direct method to drive the customers? How can we establish a more efficient and convenient shopping mode?The Smart Shopping System can be t
49、he solution. In this E-epoch design, I borrowed the setup of Global Position ystems (GPS), the advanced FLEX technology of wireless communication industry and the service concept from an on-line shopping company such as A, attempting to re-engineer the way of supermarket shopping.The new system comp
50、rises of infrastructure and subscribers. The infrastructure “In House Location and Position System,” called as “HLPS,” has a very similar system design compared to GPS.HLPS has several radio stations set-up in the supermarket plaza, using certain band radio waves to communicate with the shopping car
51、ts and other devices. The Re-Flex Protocol allowing this communication is a high-speed, two-way data exchange, which could include real time positioning and directions, the customers profile and favorite list, latest promotion messages, etc. The server of HLPS is linked with the supermarkets informa
52、tion system (Intranet) and has a gateway to the Internet. The subscribers are the “Smart Shopping Cart.” On the traditional shopping cart, a receiver and a touch screen with a credit card slot is mounted on the cart handle. A small controller in the receiver will control the slot reading, display, c
53、ommends from the touch screen, as well as the data exchange with HLPS.With the installation of the new system, the supermarket now can provide more personalized service to each client at an affordable cost. When one customer inserts his credit card into the card slot, the system would automatically
54、recognize his identity and search for those goods that appeal to him most in accordance with the likes and dislikes information stored in the database. In less than a few seconds, the screen would display a favorite goods list and discounted price just for the client. One can pick the items by point
55、ing your finger on the screen. After the shopping list has been completed, the system also has the “mission” shopping menu catering for diverse needs, e.g., a shortcut to certain goods, a route for preparation for grandmas 60th birthday picnic party, a package for a summer trip to China, etc. You ev
56、en could find such routes named as the latest technology in your life or “Africa art in the household.” The shopping experience in the supermarket will become a truly enjoyable moment, hence getting more customers from on-line shopping. We also can use the Smart Shopping Cart to find useful advice o
57、n nutrition, fashion, medical care or to read ads.
