One day in 1848 a carpenter named Marshall, who worked in a saw mill on the American River in California, made a remarkable discovery. He noticed some bright yellow particles in the water, bent down to pick them up and

3、 took them to his partner, a Mr. Sutter. This was the beginning of the Californian Gold Rush. Sutter was a Swiss who had come to America some years earlier to make his fortune. The Governor of California had given him permission to found a settlement in the Sacramento Valley and his determination an

4、d energy had made him rich. He had built the mill in partnership with-Marshall in order to make use of the abundant natural resources of his land. Sutter realized the importance of the discovery and decided to file a claim so that his right to the gold would be established. So he sent a man named Be

5、nnet to San Francisco to see the Governor. He warned Bennet not to tell anyone in case people came to the valley before his claim was recognized. Bennet could not keep the secret but the people of San Francisco did not believe him at first. Then the editor of a weekly newspaper there, Sam Brannan, w

6、ent to Sutters mill to make a report. When he came back he ran through the streets of the town shouting Gold! Gold! Within a month almost the entire population, then only 800 people, had gone to look for the precious metal. Soldiers deserted the army, sailors left their ships and men gave up their j

7、obs so as not to miss the chance of becoming rich. The news spread across America to Europe and thousands of people joined in the search. Those who went by ship had to sail round Cape Horn to reach California but some chose the overland route across America and wagon trains were formed for travelers

8、 to make the journey. Even then there were some who were prepared to cross the terrible desert of Death Valley in order to reach the gold a few days before the rest. The Gold Rush proved a disaster for Sutter himself. For years he tried to evict (驱逐) the prospectors from his property so that his fam

9、ily might enjoy the wealth of his land, but his business was ruined. The prospectors did a great deal of damage, and killed one of his sons, and at the end of his life he was a poor man who continually stopped people in the street to tell them that Gold is the Devil. 15、me. These are some of the reasons for watching TV. There are many kinds of programs on TV. Many people like to watch special events on TV, for example, the landing of the astronauts on the moon. A second kind of program is called a talk show. On this kind of show, one person interviews several famou

16、s people in the conversations. You can learn many interesting things about important people in theater, politics, sports, and other fields. A third kind of program is a program in a foreign language. There are some TV channels, which broadcast all of their programs in Spanish, French, or some other

17、languages. Many people do not like the fact that there are violent TV shows in the early evening. Many children watch these programs and think that violence is a good way to solve problems. Many people also feel that the programs are not always realistic. When all the shows in a series have a happy

18、ending, people feel that this is very misleading. In real life, many things do not have a happy ending. Another concern is advertising. Many people complain that there is too much advertising. Many of the advertisements are shown over and over again. This can be both boring and annoying. The adverti

19、sers hope you will buy their products if you hear about them often enough. But there are some TV stations that never have advertising. There are two kinds of noncommercial stations: Government sponsored stations and educational stations. When the government sponsors a station, the government pays fo

20、r all of the stations expenses. An educational station is usually supported by some kinds of educational institution. In the United States, for example, WKAR-TV is sponsored by Michigan State University. This station has no advertisements, and has many programs which are entertaining as well as educ

21、ational. Some complaints American have about TV have already been mentioned. There is too much advertising. There is too much violence. The third, and perhaps most important, complaint many people have about television is that the programs for adults are unsophisticated. Many adults feel that TV oug

22、ht to be much better than it is. In spite of all the complaints they have about TV programming and advertising, most people spend some of their time watching TV every day. Most people enjoy at least some of the things that they watch. They enjoy being entertained, and enjoy being informed by program

23、s on TV. Almost everyone likes sports programs, or special events, or news, or talk shows. Both commercial and noncommercial TV make important contributions to our lives.Statements: 1.
